ImagePuppy Stardust 005

Stardust 006 is release here

This is still Puppy 4.3.1 - thanks to Barry for this wonder-OS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Focus on desktop flow and user easiness.
- Desktop in DeepThougt taken to next stage.
- Cleanup in apps, menus and kilobytes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comments version 005
Main focus been working with menu handling in Puppy. The good old menu works ok, but it has limited use as a module in a integrated desktop. Stardust 005 has not 1 menu, but 3.
- Main menu from tray-button
- Favorites menu from mouse-mid-button. Also integrated into main mneu
- Desktop utilities from mouse-right-button.
User can edit Main menu and Favorites menu.
I have added Search as a default choice. To get this work properly, I have added a startup-script that indexes filesystem for 'find'. Pfind will search very fast even on the first search.

To clean up the jwm-theming, I have made a new theme-switcher. Preview images is no longer logical, since the theme changes instantly. Also icon-theming has been touched. I have removed the JQ8flat-lite icon-theme. Instead a grey version of the default theme is generated during desktop installation. My hope was to generate one blue, one green, and one grey, but I am not clever enough. If you like a challenge, the code is in /usr/sbin/delayedrun.

afgs has made the Stardust logo. Thanks a lot. Hopefully Mick will include the 1 bit logo into his font 'pdingobats.ttf' for use in Pwidgets. Trio has made a new defaulttexteditor, aragon has fixed geany..... If you have followed this small project, you've noticed that I'm not alone. - Many has contributed. I am very thankful to all of you.

Changelog since Stardust 004:
# New menu(s) with management (icon2desk and rox-right-click).
# New jwm-theme-switcher.
# Added 'fileedit' as defaulttextviewer. (thanks to trio)
# Added epson inklevel. reachable via PCC.
# Updated sfsconverter to 1.4 (thanks to trio)
# Updated PCC, Pwidgets, Pburn
# removed /usr/bin/mtpaintsnapshotOLD.sh (thanks to trio)
# removed JQ8flat-lite icon-theme. Desktop installation generates instead a grayscaled theme.
# Faster update of Ptray
# Index filesystem at startup for faster file-search (lowest cpu priority). Turn off in PCC
# Rox-right-click for scripts/executables/favorites.
# Black rxvt via geany and rox
# Bugfix: Icons in Boot manager (thanks to DaveS)
# Bugfix: Ptray tootip for seamonkey (thanks to 01micko)
# Bugfix: Sound at shutdown (thanks to trio)
# Bugfix: Pcc gui too small when global fontsize is increased (thanks to Jim1911)
# Bugfix: Go back to original CD-wizard (thanks to bigpup)
# Bugfix 4.3.1: Execute code from Geany 'execute' button (thanks to aragon)

Here is the good old Stardust icon-theme updated for Puppy Stardust (thanks to 01micko)

The following list shows many items that is taken out of the iso. But, it is not as critical as it seems. Most of these are tiny apps, and you have not been aware of many of them. Simply because other apps do the job.

Aqualung has left, and Pmusic is back. Pmusic has evolved in both features and speed, so It is more a matter of longterm strategy. I hope it will be possible to build more around ffmpeg in the future. We could hopefully get rid of lidsnd, libsamplerate and maybe libxine...

Gadmin-Rsync is out as well, since it crashed on first run. I don't think Pbackup fill the backup issue completely. It would be wonderful if there exists a tiny but complete backup suit.

If you see something that you would have changed, added or removed, I will be very glad if you mentioned it. Because of my limited time, it would be best if you deliver the patch.... My knowledge of network/internet tools is close to zero, so these are nearly untouched.

Possible improvement is easy to see
- icon theme in vector graphics for space saving.
- alternative multimedia tools using ffmpeg.
- hunt more files we don't need.
- upgrade gui in some of the scripts.
- extend the control center.
- replacement of Gparted (901kb)
- boot Puppy with pfix=fsck
- compile mhwaveedit without libsndfile
- driver adds/updates
- ...

This is meant to be a full featured user-oriented Puppy....Though, I have to admit that the biggest modem drivers is removed.

So what's added
- Stardust desktop environment - including pcc (Puppy control center), desktop configuration tools and Pwidgets
- Pwireless2 (replaces Pwireless)
- ATI graphic drivers
- Broadcom wifi drivers
- Pmusic (replaces aqualung)
- woo-ff
- printoxx
- floppy-formater (replaces floppy-format.sh)
- getez (replaces PmirrorGet)
- acpid
- gtkmoz (replaces PuppyBrowser)
- Pupradio (replaces pstreamvid)
- seahaven
- lameSMBexplorer (replaces pnethood)
- pstartupsound
- startmount
- fileedit (set to defaulttextviewer)
- ink (epson ink-level)

- Many scripts has been upgraded to latest version

And what does the Stardust-generator change
- Install desktop at first startup rather than keep it in the iso to save space
- snap desktop icons - medium grid
- simple Pmount facelift
- Xlock is fixed
- start pCD instead of defaultmediaplayer when click on audio-CD icon
- seamonkey buttons
- defaultaudioplayer is changed from aqualung to pmusic
- Updated P-series
- Net-setup goes to Pwireless2 for wireless configuration
- CD/DVD wizard is cleaned up
- Darker background color in: rxvt, geany, abiword

And of course, something had to leave
*** Programs ***
- aqualung
- libmad
- madplay
- burniso2cd
- cdp
- cgtkcalc
- didiwiki
- e3
- floppy-format.sh
- gcolor2 (color chooser)
- gdmap
- gexec
- gfnrename - maybe better than PRename, but this is bash and easy updated.
- glightoff
- gtkdialog markup editor - devx ???
- gtklogfileviewer - Does any script use anymore ???
- gtksourceview
- Net-setup (old version)
- nicoedit
- pcdripper
- Pdisk - could maybe be in use by some wizard
- picpuz
- pictureviewer
- pmirror/mirdir
- pmwget (PMirrorget)
- pnetnood
- pplog
- pstreamvid
- ptooltips - tool to show tooltips in gtkdialog - not longer in use
- PuppyBrowser
- PuppyPdf - Abiword does exactly the same
- Pwireless
- quisp
- rsync / gadmin-rsync - crashes on first run
- securetelnetshell
- tile
- waveplay - linked to aplay
- xAutoconnect - Pwireless2 should do the job
- xcalc
- xclipboard
- Xconsole
- xfontsel
- ycalc
- zfind

*** Trimming ***
- cdrkit - Pburn has very few dependencies
- libsnd (only mhwaveedit (aqualung) use libsnd)
- jwmconfig2

*** Control panel has ditched some ***
- countrywizard
- XserverWizard
- wizardwizard
- And plenty of menu items

*** Graphics ***
- All wallpapers
- some Gtk-themes
- All Icon-themes
- many mini-icons

*** misc ***
- some apps NOT in control center has also lost their place in the menu
--> sfs-version-converter - warnings pointing to it is changed.
--> Pstopwatch - Ptimer should be enough.
- some documentation files
- some audio files
- the biggest modem drivers
- many fixed fonts

Puppy 4.3.1 Bugfixes
- JWM tray configuration.
- JWM keyboard shortcut configuration.
- Xlock - Lock screen.
- Kill pid of wallpaper setter when closing window.
- Shutdown / Reboot from menu after NFS error.

Uploaded!!!!!!!

BTW! can anyone confirm that the broadcom driver works for newer wifi cards. It is rather heavy, so I don't want it included if it doesn't work.

Failed to boot via CD or USB - "attempted to kill init"

#7 Post by outtaspam »

Hi Zigbert,

I checked the MD5 and then burned a CD-RW and made a USB (formatted to FAT) install using unetbootin (windows) of Stardust 005.

I tried to boot on my sisters' Gateway MA7 laptop with Vistsux and no puppy installed. The boot stopped with "attempted to kill init" whether the CD or USB version was used.

What is going on?

Stardust 005 delta file
(you can make a new 005 iso image from the 004 iso image and this file)

Download: pup_stardust-004.iso:pup_stardust-005.iso.delta

md5sum:a2483282df046a0e9aaa52e1aa87de6b pup_stardust-004.iso:pup_stardust-005.iso.delta

Click the delta file, gui for Xdelta opens, drag pup_stardust-004.iso to first box, pup_stardust-004.iso:pup_stardust-005.iso.delta to second box, "GENERATE".

Be sure to check the md5sum with zigbert's in main post.

Hostage thanks to gposil

Stardust 005 is a really impressive bugfix and update of 431. The Control Center and the ability to update the menus is great.

Only one minor problem noted so far. Get message "wpa_supplicant failed to start" upon bootup or restart. It doesn't affect my installation.

Consider these suggestions:
1. Include on the right click functions ability to open the Shutdown menu and the Control Center.
2. Include in the Control Center Mouse/Keyboard settings options to set Num-lock key on or off.
3. Include blue-moon icons.

Thanks,
Jim

CD/DVD Wizard

#12 Post by bigpup »

The CD/DVD Wizard that is in Stardust 005 is the one that works.

Thank you for fixing this!

I love what you have done with this version of Puppy Stardust. It is the best of them all.

Your Control Center should be the must have item, in any Puppy Linux.

Thank you for all you have done in giving us all a very excellent Puppy!

Hi ziggy

Here is pdingobats - Stardust edition

(Rob, your's is coming)

Edit. I will post the tarball of the font later tonight. I have to edit the font in my shed and it is a tropical 40 degrees in there at the moment! It isn't quite right as you can see in the screeny, but it is only a matter of dragging the points around in fontforge, a difficult thing to do when sweat interupts one's vision! Incidentally, fontforge won't run in any puppy on my main box :( , conflicting with the graphics card, and the fonts in the app are huge and unreadable. It is a documented linux bug with the radeon driver and the radeon 9200 pro card, no one has fixed yet.

In Abiword, "Create and Modify Styles" crashes Abiword.
There is an updated version 2.8.1 that does not crash.
It took a little while to get rid of most of the gray color.
That was a little to much gray for me.

I did a frugal install of 005 today and each release is getting better and better. I especially like the new menus and the ability to easily add or remove entries.

Great job....... :)
