Year 2010 - The Translation Year of Puppy Linux Subject description: Anyone has a universal translation HOWTO? Or shall we place it here? |
|
Happy New Year!
The regularly coming request at puppylinux.org is how to translate Puppy Linux. While I have an idea how to do this, I have not translated Puppy yet, so it would be good if someone could write an updated how-to.
Or shall we use this thread to work on that how-to?
Step 1 - Is it correct to say that the first step in translating Puppy is launching "Chooselocale" from the menu? Are the various locales already available from the ISO? Is the situation the same in 4.2.1 and in 4.3.1? How about in 4.1.2?
If the desired locale is not available, download the devx sfs (corresponding to your Puppy version), put it in /mnt/home and reboot to use it. (Before remastering, boot via CD or USB with pfix=ram and remove the devx sfs from its current location then hide it in a subdirectory of your drive. Get more ideas about remastering here.)
If your language uses different fonts, add or change the fonts in /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF and regenerate the fonts dir and list by these commands in console:
| Code: | mkfontdir
mkfontscale |
You may have to run Menu-Setup-Mouse/Keyboard wizard to fine-tune your keyboard settings
Step 2 - Modify the scripts in /usr/share/desktop-directories and /usr/share/applications. What is the technique so that the correct language is displayed with the chosen locale?
More steps (please fill in).
Thanks a lot!

Not really contributing with the step by step guide,
But do check this link out:
http://blog.dixo.net/2009/10/24/pepipopum-automatically-translate-po-files-with-google-translate/
Chances are that it can be used to translate mo's, somehow.
Cheers!

I have taken the first step:
http://puppylinux.org/wikka/TranslatePuppy
More info in the "translating scripts" section is needed tho, since I am disconected from that area.
Cheers!

Really interesting! Can't really say I understand what it does, but it's nice to see bigger interest in the translation of stuff

Yes, it has taken time.
The big difference is:
Translations are based on internationalization now.
Internationalization is further developed and maintained by BarryK.
The work of translation is not for 1 puppy but for every future puppy that is made from woof2.
See it in action with recent racy or wary where you may use momanager (see menu > tools > momanager)
Hope this helps
