Looks interesting, especially if someone sells the 'barebones' version singly - great for hacking your own netbook!

This is the perfect Woof-able netbook (The article says that both Ubuntu and WinXP can be used for edubook).

Yes, I was able to visit Michael Barnes sometime in 2006:
http://www.linuxdevices.com/news/NS6828123924.html
(and I've seen my future hairline in in Michael's  )

Now I just found MCPup - Puppy 3.01 optimized for Norhtec's eBox series (edubook is its sibling).

I want to quote Lobster here:
We are Puppy

Resistance is futile
Eh - did I get it right?

it looks interesting, and so do their small desktops (if you can call them that).

but by the time you've added wireless etc your almost at the cost of a netbook.

According to this retailer: qbitonline.com, Wifi is included. And priced much lower than a conventional netbook...

Just received mine from Norhtec a couple weeks ago. It's a great little PC. Puppy runs really well on it.

I bought the bare bones system (512 MB of RAM, power cord, no SD card, no WiFi, no batteries) for US$160. They charged $50 for shipping and handling via a courier - took less than a week to reach me.

Pretty good deal, if you ask me.

I have been looking at the Edubook. It is nice. But, I did notice the physical size is not listed. I would like to know if it size. I hope it is larger than the 2goPC than I use. Hopefully, the keyboard is bigger (i.e. easier to type on). Thanks in advance for the information.

It is 22.5cm x 15.5cm and approx. 3.5cm thick (at it's thickest point with LCD closed).

From what I can tell, the keyboard is the exact same keyboard as the one in the EeePC 701... if that helps at all.

Thank you judland for posting the size. The Edubook is smaller than the 2goPC (24 cm by 20.5 cm by 4 cm). Yes, the keyboard information is a help. The keyboard is same size as the one on 2goPc. I will have to think about getting one a bit more. I do like the internal DC power supply with AA NiMhd batteies and the better screen resolution (1024 by 600).

I did go the manufacturer's web site and take a closer look at the keyboard. It is the same as the 2goPC.

I've owned my EeePC 701 since they first came to market (summer 2007?) and it's been my main PC all that time, so I'm quite accustomed to the smaller keyboard.

I'm pleased that the Edubook remained the same size (approx.) as the EeePC, even though it has a larger screen. I really like the portability of the small form-factor.

I'll be attempting to finish up my own review of the Edubook (along with a side-by-side comparison to the EeePC 701) this weekend. I'll post a link here when it's done, if anyone is interested.

This is awesome, thanks!

I've been watching this one develop and I'm really happy with this information and the pricing that I'm seeing on it.

I bought an eeepc701 the day they came out and I've loved it. My daughter has hijacked it though, so I'm looking for another small machine for carrying out and about. This will probably be it.

Does anyone know of any other retailers besides Qbit? It doesn't look like they offer the thing with the wifi dongle built in. I don't have a problem going straight to Nortech, as long as the shipping isn't overly much.

judland, what version of Puppy are you running on yours? I'm thinking about using 214X from ttuuxxx.

I'm very excited,
Sully

You're welcome!

I have the Edubook build of Puppy 4.3.1 installed. It's the latest version of Puppy with special patches made to the kernel to provide sound and WIFI support on the Edubook.

I'm not certain what shipping would be to the U.S., but it must be close to the $50 I paid to get my Edubook shipped to Canada. They shipped via DHL and it took less than a week to reach me. I felt that it was quite reasonable.

I requested a quote for getting the Edubook from the manufacturer. They quoted the shipping cost as 54 dollars US to ship it to the USA. I hope this helps.

Thank you, judland, for posting your review. It is very helpful.
