GNU Paint

#1 Post by lvds »

Hi,

I've searched in the forum but could not find it so I apologize if it has
already been adressed :P

Please could a coding guru make us a PET package easy to install for
the GNU paint program ? and a SFS too please :-)

Best regards
Laurent

Gpaint requires libglade and the Gnome desktop libraries. It may be a little heavy for a standard Puppy installation... :P

Puppy still includes Glade and it is fairly easy to port from glade to gtkbuilder anyway... but Gnome is certainly too heavy to be included Puppy. You can certainly install it if you really want, and the same is true of KDE if you want to try its various painting programs.
There are also a bunch of other programs you might want to try if you don't like mtpaint for some reason - xpaint or grafx2 or one of the many pyGTK programs like MyPaint, or several Java programs, or a couple of QT programs like drawpile, or various Windows programs that can be run in Wine.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Aha.
It turns out that gpaint doesn't in fact require gnome - only stuff which is already included in Puppy, like libgnomeprintui

So I have packaged it: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 018#396018

libgnomeprint and libgnomeprintui will no longer be included since the only programs that required it were abiword and inkscapelite. I recompiled inkscapelite to print without it and abiword-2.8+ does not require it. Glade will eventually go as well.
mtpaint is now themable and I am willing to recompile it if provided with an updated icon set ... more info on that in disciples gnu paint thread here:

Great :D Many thanks to all !

...So, maybe it would be best to have a "static" version for GNU-paint ?
and we could use it on the "coming-soon" releases...

Also, you were right that many people have hard time with the
mtpaint interface and that's why I was looking for a software more
friendly. Among all the above you cited, is there one coming close to
Gnu-paint and working with the puppy libs ?

Best regards

Try xpaint first, as gpaint is a fork of it, and it is probably the smallest option. You might find a couple of features a little disconcerting though ;)

Dear puppians,

I haven't checked all the posts in the forum, but there is one fabulous and free online graphics app called sumo paint (http://www.sumopaint.com/app). That URL will launch the paint program. If you want to browse the site, just go to: http://www.sumopaint.com/. This is a photoshop clone that is MUCH faster that the original or GIMP and is written entirely in flash! The real executable (.swf) is only 1.3 MB. The programmers must be very talented, and the atmosphere at the site is very friendly.

With kind regards,
vovchik

I got gpaint to compile without needing any gnome stuff, but you need the latest sources from ubuntu which have the changes. Plus, you need to compile it on a systen which doesnt have gnomeprint, etc installed, or patch the configure.ac/in file so it doesn't look for gnome libs.
Still, I don't know why anyone would bother with the program since mtpaint is available and *much* more capable.

The ubuntu sources are here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gpaint/0.3.3-6
You'll need to apply the ubuntu patch and then copy the patches from the debian/patches dir and apply them to the sources before configgging/compiling
