Tpup 001 SCSI, 2.6.31.5 smp Woof puppy 5 (maybe:) ) 102MB |
|
Tpup, Series 4, Quirky all have the same roots they are based on the T2 project, Quirky is a reduced driver project that Barry is working on mostly.
Tpup is built using woof and whole lot of patience, Its taken me 2 days to get it right. Now that its setup it should be much easier. Tpup has distro size advantages over all the other 5 Series due to it not being dependent on Gnome, which reduces the size as you can see. That is with extra drivers like SCSI, included, some older modem drivers are removed, some modems from 10+ years ago.
Changes
-removed some backgrounds,
-removed all icon themes and add 2 themes, one I use all the time and one I downloaded from this forum.
-updated viewnior
-updated xorgwizard so it doesn't have that locale issue
-changed the taskbar speaker icons
-replaced top with htop
-updated ffmpeg and X264 to Quirky 0.8, Tpup hasn't been updated to the same level as Quirky via the scripts.
really this is a alpha testing version, still has the black background behind the menu icons, grrr but we'll figure it out,

Hi ttuuxxx, Now I can see what you were doing...
If I understand you, this is a Woof build using the T2 sources. Am I right?.
What´s the aim of your project?. As I see this is a small size puplet that can work in newer Hardware but what other objectives do you try to achieve?.
Is this a base for XO-Puppy project?
Excue me if I ask to much, I´m just curious...
Greetings,
clarf

Hi Clarf I'm glad you asked that question.
well its like this and i'll explain in point form
- its been over a year that Barry has made a statement about his retirement. He has ventured off into in and mostly in Quirky, you can tell by the way the other woof builds haven't been updated much officially, like dpup, spup, tpup, upup, apup etc.
- Quirky is getting the main attention, well you can't blame him, he can't focus on like 5 things at once.
- Each have went under different developers wings and the second smallest is 125MB, spup.
- Now if you think which one will be the most developed by Barry that will be Tpup's little brother Quirky.
- The smallest by far will be Tpup, heck I could include Gimp, Inkscape and even Wine and still be smaller than the next closest version.
- I also figure that 2.14X is near to be finished and is easily maintained, Because I know it 90% inside and out by now that it should give me some extra space to take new things on.
- When we get a working a kernel for olpc, I'll include an extra version with it included on a regular basis.

Managed to download via wget after a few mistakes, could not get xorg to work on dell laptop computer just hangs with black screen.
Booted on a toshiba laptop with pfix=ram, xorg ok, but no wireless interface recognised, this is common to most puppies with later kernels on this computer.
Abiword and draw did not open from desktop icon, will try a frugal install on my main compuer later and test further.

My Nvidia graphics did not succeed to use tpup.
Sad it was impossible to set it up for me.
Lighthouse just worked though tested it just after.

Would not start xorg (black screen freeze) with my Inspiron 700m,
intel 855gm graphics. Same problem with most Quirkys.
Works fine with Inspiron 4000, ati graphics; and my old HP pc.
Very nice mplayer (with xv).
Very nice pup radio, telly.
Good flash streams.
Wireless worked fine with zd1211rw usb, and atheros pcmcia
ar2413, using standard wizard.

Had no problem downloading with Firefox.
Frugal install on the old P3 test box.......xorg works fine with the onboard Intel 810 graphics. Installed Firefox 3.6 and Flash 10.0r42......streaming video is nice and smooth.

Booted from frugal (Lin'N'Win) with pfix=ram.
Got the desktop, but saw quirky008 faults were there as well. (imported?)
- my Belgian keyboard returned to us.
- the icons don't have a transparent background.
Could configure the wireless device and go onto internet.
Was proposed to create a save file and did so.
Rebooted without pfix=ram.
Got the desktop, with still the same issues as described, but this time no network devices were detected and thus created. Nor the wireless nor ethernet port.
So I am stuck here.
EDIT
Well, all of sudden I remembered something from the good old times and saw the light.
Copied the zxxxxx.sfs to /mnt/home and now I can configure the network devices again.
EDIT 2
I tried the Simple Network Setup (sns) also and it worked ok.

Which zxxxxx.sfs file did you use? I don't see one in ttuuxxx' main post.
------------
ttuuxxx
I'll give it a spin later today, but FWIW, I'd have left the scsi drivers in a zxxx.sfs and included the 'exotic' modules, many I think are wireless drivers.
Still early days and woof like you say is optimised for Quirky. I guess it's up to the rest of us to fix the scripts for the other builds and send Barry a diff (xdelta) file and see if he wants to include that in the main woof. (And whatever package updates we compile in the ibiblio repo.) This would be the aim of the xdeltas I think. It would be nice just to knock together your tpup from the woof script out of the box.
Which brings me to another point, I spose anything compiled in tpup should have a "tpup" extension in it somewhere.
Cheers

As to abiword not working, it requires a gnome library file.
I tried starting it from a terminal and it could not find that library file.
# abiword
abiword: error while loading shared libraries: libgnomeprintui-2-2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#
Nuff said,
