Connecting to the net on PPPoE

#1 Post by stlchuck »

Having seen several posts about difficulties connecting to the net with PPPoE thought I'd pass on the advice that I was given in another forum where the net and Linux is concerned. While it is possible to configure a PPPoE connection it can be difficult to do and not always reliable. The easiest in the long run is to buy an inexpensive wired router that supports PPPoE connections and can act as a DHCP server and a hardware firewall. It may take a bit of fiddling but once you have your router set up with your ISP's connection info all that is needed from Puppy is to click the auto DHCP option for network connection and your on line. If you are also using Windows on the same machine then use the Auto Detect network connections option in the Network Connections>properties>TCP/IP set up dialog box. It may also be necessary to enter the routers IP address in this dialog box. Once you have it set up you have the advantage of easy net connections in Puppy and other OS's AND the security of a hardware firewall to help keep hackers and such out.
