embeded graphics

#21 Post by Ted Dog »

One thing I saw in the word processor ambiword was the ability to incorporate inline embeded graphics. It would cause a large page to load but it would be a single hit.

It's also possible to use php code to generate simple images on the fly, althohg the methods are a little beyond me. I'm also guessing that it wouldn't count if the image was stored elsewhere, as a different server woulod then be sending the image.

If this is true then I'm sure they're also counting things like external style sheets as hits, so it might be wise to use inline styles also.

Also a good idea might be a more restrictive robots policy. Not sure if we really need everything to be indexed by Google or not since we index everything ourselves. I'd keep them out of things like image directories for sure. When I look at my logs the googlebot is usually one of the most frequent visitors.

On my own server I also keep a growing list of banned IP addresses, cutting down on much worthless traffic. Wouldn't work for Zombied PC's but it can help keep out certain scummy elements and reduce the number of hits those jerks generate.

I think I should altert everyone here. Puppy was just mentioned on LangaList, and /can/ have a slashdot effect.

Perhaps good use of the coral cacheing someone else mentioned in the forums may be able to help, by making the the page count but have the images cached.

This should help reducing the hits.
I took them from

http://www.goosee.com/puppy/news.htm
http://www.goosee.com/puppy/index.html

Just alter the links in these 2 pages.

Am I correct in assuming that this sort of browser tweaking, called "pipelining," could be the cause of problems?
