As I understand, we've looped through and found we need "open", that works, wlan0 is up, then I guess iwconfig should run again but it's not. I don't think the timeout should make a difference because when I run dhcpcd manually it is connected in roughly 8.5 seconds.
Sorry about that. A loop-count variable was reaching zero one-loop too soon. Try this...

This 'sns' and 'rc.network' also has support for sending an empty Client ID, that I posted about:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01445
Same result, log is almost identical. Still running "dhcpcd wlan0" in console to connect.

What I will do, at some point during the week, is extract the wg311v2 from my old box and put it in my main box. It is a lot closer to the router and I waste about 70% less time booting pfix=ram! I won't rest until we resolve this one. I don't give up on these type of issues. :)

IMO, FWIW, is that the breakdown occurs in the "while" loop in the "Big For Loop".. it's not in front of me so no line number but it starts "while [ 1 ] ; do.. "

The rt73 usb based adapter connected first go on my old box, so it's not the box. However wireless performance was so much more sluggish. It's due to the physical location. On the wg311v2 I have an after market 6" antenna connected so performance, once connected, is great, given the location. Funny thing too, with the wg311v2 I get more networks listed when iwlist is run.

Cheers
01micko,
I need to see that log. Can you please post it. I want to see the result of the second timeout, what you have in 'Access Point'.

sinc wrote:I posted earlier that this is the first puppy I have been able to keep and continuous wireless connection without reestablishing every 60 seconds or so. Well let me expound... Using internet connection wizard I get "unable to find a live network". using pwireless2 I get "unable to find an active device" using SNS i get connected and everything works right EXCEPT it is not persistent over my next boot. when I boot up again I have to rerun SNS to get connected to the internet again. is there a way to see why SNS has to be rerun to connect again?
Are you using ndiswrapper? Or, what driver? Wireless or wired?

After you run sns, there is a log file at /tmp/sns_wireless_log for wireless, or /tmp/sns_wired_log for wired. You could post that here, obfuscating any password.

Are you using the latest scripts that I posted to this thread?

What I don't like is that Q10 doesn't have what puppy431std have.

GXine can do both .flv and .mp4 while Q10 can not.

I write in it now. It doesn streaming video good. Can do ram or rm files from streaming radio so very good.

I have not tested the nv or novea nvida drivers. I just accepted what it suggested and that wrked out of the box.
I don't understand. Quirky 010 has Gnome Mplayer, which plays far more video codecs than does 431, including all the .flv and .mp4 files that I have thrown at it.

Has anyone found a solution? Is this just a problem with OpenOffice or is part of a wider problem with added sfs files?
Please see the first post in this thread. A patch is required for Unionfs, that I will do next time. As the post says, "Firefox and some other apps" -- well, OpenOffice is one of those other apps.

My first impressions:

I like the simple network setup, I was able on get on my wireless network and connect to the internet with a lot less trouble than previous versions.

I had a weird problem with the sound, it only worked through the headphone jack at first. After I played with the mixer settings for a bit, I was able to get the speakers working, but I'm not sure what I did.

The CPU scaling program worked with my netbook, it only recognizes the Atom processor correctly in a few of the puplets. I've never gotten good results in 4.31 or any older Puppies.

I used the tool in pburn to blank a cd and when it was finished and ejected the disk the drive drawer opened and closed again in a wink..no time to pick the disk off the tray even.

I apologize if I was unclear in my previous post, I will try to include more specific information going forward.

I have a Compaq Presario 2700 using wireless PCMCIA card. Uses module b43. it does not work with b43legacy.

i am NOT currently using the new scripts b/c when i installed them it broke sns. I wasn't able to use it anymore after installing those scripts. so i went back to a fresh install and started over. i will feel really bad if that was my fault so I will go and try to do that again.
...
okay I figured that out. it was not set as executable. works now. I will run sns and reboot and let you know.

...AFTER using the new script and rebooting my wireless connection was active without having to rerun SNS. So fantastic that part seems to be working. ...

... I spoke too soon. I got lucky one time and when I rebooted it worked. I tried rebooting again and no connection, my pcmcia card was not active. i reran sns (with the new scripts installed) rebooted again and no connection after restart. and one more time for good measure, no luck.

so after this enormously long post the results are I still have to run SNS after every reboot to connect to the internet.

Hi Barry

Here's the log minus the "ifconfig wlan0 up" and "iwlist wlan0 scan" part, it's exactly the same, as you'd know

Code: Select all

STEP1c: ifconfig wlan0 down
STEP2: iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
STEP3: iwconfig wlan0 channel 6
STEP4: iwconfig wlan0 essid "TP-LINK"
STEP5: iwconfig wlan0 key restricted 1234567890
STEP5a: ifconfig wlan0 up

ERROR, TIMEOUT. Have not got an Access Point.
Result of 'iwconfig wlan0':
wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Frequency:5.26 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Tx-Power:10 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
          RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:1234-5678-90 Security mode:restricted
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

STEP5: iwconfig wlan0 key open 123456780
STEP5a: ifconfig wlan0 up
Doesn't matter what value I set as the timeout, result is the same. It's the same as my last log.. the key is kept in the loop but the essid is lost. Still running "dhcpcd wlan0" and online in 8.5 seconds.

Cheers

Quirky-010 on the Edubook

#90 Post by pakt »

Quirky-010 works well on the Edubook.

Sound, LAN, wireless, power-off and Xorg (vesa) all work.

Some comments:

- On booting, a noticeable delay during 'depmod' and a long delay during 'updating network-drivers-list'.

- Internet Connection Wizard: window stretches below bottom of screen. Last line seen is choice for using 'Internet Connection Wizard' as default.

- Used SNS to set up wireless successfully with WPA2 encryption. It found both 'r6040' and 'rtl819xU' interfaces.

- One point in SNS that can confuse is where the choice for 'eth0' 'wlan0' and 'Windows' is made. Perhaps the 'Windows' button should say 'Windows driver' instead.

- In SNS, where choice for starting Firewall is made: after chosing to start the firewall, SNS didn't return to the previous menu but exited instead. That bypassed the choice to 'Set SNS as default network setup tool', etc. (I think that was what came next).

- Made save file and rebooted: wireless setting was not saved - perhaps because SNS exited prematurely (see comment above). Note that I was using the SNS script that came with quirky-010.

Barry, I managed to compile the Edubook rdc driver for Xorg 7.5 by following your instructions, but the driver didn't work. The Xorg log showed an error when trying to load the driver. As you wrote, the developers need to upgrade the driver.

Bootmanager strange /mnt/home indication.

LoneRifle: Regarding the RDC Xorg driver. Here are the instructions Barry sent me:
It's easy to compile, although it is really designed for Xorg 7.3. These are the notes I made compiling it for 7.5:

...i copied xf86Resources.h, xf86RAC.h, xf86str.h from xorg 7.3 (puppy 431) /usr/X11R7/include/xorg

Using 010.
Tapping doesn't work, even after changing xorg.conf tapping option's from 0 to 220.
And my laptop screen is very dark and a little bit green. ATI card and xorg driver...
Ayttm still doesn't work with other location than US.
My problems. So far... :P

Checking the git logs at Xorg indicated that they did away with the RAC and Resources APIs with 7.5. Are you sure copying from xorg 7.3 is a good idea? Surely a better idea would be to remove references to those APIs?

"connect" probing failure, usbserial

#96 Post by Greatnessguru »

Quirky010, pfix=ram

I plugged in my Motorola VE465 mobile phone,
in "modem" mode, with the USB cable.

I clicked on "connect".
Internet Connection Wizard said:
"Current setup/status no modem detected"

That's the first problem.

I then clicked "Connect to Internet by dialup analog or ..."
"Warning! No modem detected! You cannot dialout!"

That's the second problem.

"Connection status log
A modem was not automatically detected,
so you need to click the 'probe' button.
Do this now!"
"Test
MODEM
probe"
I clicked "probe".
"PupDial modem probe
PROBE"
I clicked "PROBE" (what's with All These Probes???).
The Wizard came back with "no modem detected" again.

That's the third problem.

I then did:
cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
modprobe -v usbserial vendor=0x... product=0x...
[I used vendor and product values from the "cat".
Sorry, copy&paste doesn't work from urxvt.]

Then the PupDial modem probe worked!

That is the Fourth problem:
That the probing does not work until I enter
some strange, weird, goobledygook
that no mobile phone user is ever going to guess.

Thank you,
Eddie Maddox

Not the same as calling boot manager in puppy 431. The comment is more logic.

Quirky-010,
Test conditions, laptop acer travelmate 4600, live-cd and pfix=ram
Testing the suspend/hibernate mode with/without the cpu freq scaling
close the lid, after 2-3 sec the portable suspends/hibernates... open lid, hit any key it resumes correctly.
close lid, then unplug power supply, wait a few minutes, open lid and hit any key -> resume OK.
unplug power supply, then close lid, portable suspends/hibernates after 2-3 seconds .. open lid and hit any key -> resume OK.
run an application, ex: abiword, type a few characters then close lid ... wait a bit
open lid and hit any key -> resume OK : abiword open and text is still there.
- same results with/without "cpu freq scaling" activated, good news
-** removable media are redetected after resume... live-cd on dvd-rw drive
One step at a time, "hit any key" will correctly wake-up the portable, but mouse movements have no effect.

About screen resolution and backplane brightness (ATI on board) :
I have 2 resolutions available and correctly detected : 1400x1050x16 and 1400x1050x24 (see my sig : ATI X600)
I've allways used the highest resolution/color depth possible and did not notice the dark-screen effect until I tried it in quirky-009
- 16 bit color depth gives a much darker screen (backplane neon), while 24 color depth is normal,
they both seem to have 15 levels of brightness, but the 16 bit depth max level is much darker than the 24 bit one
The fn brightness buttons will let me choose the brightness level of the backplane neon.
maybe a bit is used for max level brightness ? just a guess on my side

Over the last week Linux has been kicking me in the teeth. First, the latest version of Knoppix, 6.3, would not fire up on my Laptop. It goes through the process but just before it gets to displaying the desktop it hangs. This is the first Knoppix that has done that.

Now Quirky010 does the same thing - the first Puppy to do it as well!

Normally, I don't enter the testing process so early but I have a dire need to play the latest videos from YouTube and Barry boasted that Quirky played every video file he threw at it. That was a challenge. Downloaded Quirky010 did a frugal install and fired up.

On my desktop, (pentium 350MHz processor, ATI graphics card) all was well. The Quirky desktop appeared. GMplayer got my video to play more than Gxine ever did but only the sound played normally. The first frame of the video displayed but would not move along with the sound. I could move it with the slider and got some very strange effects. I put down this behaviour to the slow processor so decided to frugal install Quirky on my laptop, (1.5GHz Celeron and Intel 810 graphic chipset).

Quirky did everything normally until it got the point where it displays the desktop. All I got was a blank black screen and it hung. I wonder if the fault is the Intel graphics?

With Puppy 4.3.1 I could get into a desktop but I could not change the screen resolution until I changed the standard Intel driver to the intel810 driver. With Quirky I cannot get to a desktop so how can I change the driver??? Help!

As Knoppix appeared to be doing something similar I wonder if this Intel problem is standard to the kernel or something. If so then Linux has got a problem in my eyes. I am not going to change my laptop and it would appear Linux has decided it would not be compatible with a very common older chipset. Of course the problem may be nothing to do with the graphics driver!

One other point. On my desktop, Puppy 4.3.1 reverted back to behaviour I had not seen since very early puppies. The PC when shutdown would not turn off. I can cope with pressing a button on my PC. Quirky010 has the same problem but displays some messages I cannot make any sense of on the screen before hanging.

As a side issue maybe I can solve my video problem if there is a version of the GMPlayer in Quirky available as a pet or sfs for Puppy 4.3.1. Will the following (from the Quirky repository) work in 4.3.1 or will I need to get something else? Does it have all the codecs?

gnome-mplayer-20100124-1-q1.pet

Do I have to load flashplayer10-10.0.42.34.pet as well if I want to play h264 flv files or is that only for the browser plugin?

I have just run your link and it played OK, copied the download from temp to downloads and rebooted.
File plays OK with GNOME-Mplayer by clicking on it, i am using a frugal install of Quirky10 on a Packard Bell 1.8G laptop and 384M ram.
