RC5 trashed my dillo browser

#3421 Post by don922 »

Downloaded and installed RC5 this morning.

The bookmarks in the dillo browser no longer work. This browser (Dillo 0.8.5-il8n-misc.) came from the dillo_0.8.5-4.1.pet which was included as a fix on page 194 of this thread. It had always worked very well until RC5.

I uninstalled the dillo_0.8.5-4.1.pet and the browser reverted back to the original Dillo 0.8.6. The bookmarks again work. The problem with this is that the lettering in the browser is so rough that it is difficult to read. I use dillo a lot for reading. Also, the very handy menu to make adjustments to dillorc is gone.

I use dillo a lot because the version of Firefox in this puppy is too slow and unstable on my old clunker.

Still can't get my remote printers working although they work if I use them locally connected. Thought that pointed to a samba issue but if you believe they are okay then I'll have to look again to see why my setup isn't working. Got it working okay in X16 (I think it was that) but not in RC4 or RC5. Thanks for the feedback,

Yes it installs okay but do you have a "home " icon on your desktop? I don't on mine. Frugal does but not Full.

Hi Dave, Don´t know about a change in Samba after X16, Pnethood works fine for me and testing samba commands gives no problem in RC5. Although lameSMBxlporer can see another systems it fails to see any share, but lameSMBxplorer never worked for me, including Dpup, 431 and others...

I don´t have any home icon on desktop either, but it´s supposed to be there? (I never used full install in any other Pup). a Home icon in frugal reflect the actual pup_save location, but FULL don´t have one, then that Home which partition/location should be targeting?.

hi don the bookmarks work perfectly with dillo, This version I compiled/installed all you do is right click on the website you wanted bookmarked and select "Bookmark this page" then its automatically listed in the bookmark section, then all you do is select it from the list, works perfect :)
also a quick start for dillo is the help link under menu, then select the home icon and it will take you to google.com

Just lost a post yet again...I hate this forum software!

ttuuxxx/don922
I can confirm that it works as ttuuxxx says in my frugal install.

clarf/ttuuxxx

Thanks for your feedback clarf.
Perhaps I should not have used "home".
If I install 214X frugally on, say, sdb3, then I get a desktop icon for that partition which is called "home."
If I do a Full install of 214X I don't get any icon for that partition, which I feel is wrong, as that partition could and in fact does have other stuff on it (frugals).
If I do a Full install of 431 then I do get a desktop icon (not called home but called sdb3).
Not life threatening but if it's a simple tweak might be worthwhile?

Re remote printing:
In Pnethood I can see the remote PC which has the printers attached and also can see and open shares. Also, like you, I can see the remote PC in lameSMBexplore but can't see any shares.
I wonder if lameSMBexplorer is working for anyone. Also what advantage is it supposed to have over Pnethood? I did ask before but there were no replies.

If you have any ideas what I should be checking to fix my remote printing issue then it'd be appreciated.

Cheers
Dave

lameSMBexplore is a new samba shares explorer that was made from scratch to replace pnethood, since development of pnethood was stopped for over a year.
Maybe try the latest version, if it works, I'll add it and if it doesn't, I'll toss it :)

The thing that does not work in the bookmarks in the dillo browser that came from the dillo_0.8.t-4.1.pet is the bookmarks button. When it is selected nothing happens. No list of bookmarks - nothing!

I understand the "right click" selection method and I don't know where any "right click" problem comes from.

here's a small filemanager that I linked rox's icons too, can't figure out how to set new icons to it, like for pet,sfs etc.
Anyways its small and looks nice (now it does), and it crashes if you go ito the opt directory, not That this was going to be installed by default, but I just like trying different things, Too bad it hasn't been updated in like 5yrs, really could of had some potential.

Hi don it works perfect,
I right click on a page and select ad to bookmarks.
then I click the bookmark button and it opens the bookmark page,
I then click the bookmark I just added and it takes to the page.
below are added bookmarks.
You might have a save issue, from previously saved files maybe.
bootup live with
puppy pfix=ram
and then try it. If its that then delete /root/.dillo <-- hidden folder and copy on the one from the cd image to that location.

I don't think you are reading what I wrote.

I want to use the dillo browser came from dillo_0.8.5-4.1.pet that you included on page 194 of this thread; because it is much better looking and works better. I used that dillo 0.8.5-il8n-misc browser until RC5.

The browser that you showed in your book.jpg is not the browser from the dillo_0.8.5-4.1.pet. Look at how rough and uneven the lettering is in your book.jpg.

What I have now the Dillo 0.8.6 browser that is in 214X is better looking than the book.jpg.

There is no use in raising questions in this thread because your answer is:

Does anyone know how to make dbus make its socket in
/var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket I think it used to when I first installed dbus, The reason why I found another network monitor (blinky replacement) that compiles fine but needs the socket for it run, it comes with new features like for wireless etc. Would be nice to get it going.

I installed the lameSMBxploer-0.2.1b and somehow got to see my samba shares.
So it looks like the new version works but I have to say that I much prefer the seemingly ease of use of Pnethood. Perhaps put both in but pls pls don't chuck Pnethood which just works despite HairyWill no longer being so active here.

Hi dave did you only just install one of the pet packages listed on that page? I think there were 4 of them, I just want to get it right :)
Also Pnethood is a real tiny app and I'll never remove it, Its would be kind of crazy to remove it since 2.14x has like 4 dialup programs, I think there's room for 2 network shares :)

I compiled 0.8.6 for 2.14X which is a newer version but if you want me to regress to a older buggier version thats ok, I don't use dillo so, people who do like yourself who do, get to call whats what. :)

ttuuxxx,
Yes I only installed the one pet as mentioned. I read Patriot's first post a few times but still couldn't work out if that was the correct one or not. Let me know if you want me to do any more tests on this but as I mentioned before I don't feel comfortable with this app so I may not be the best one to do the tests.
Glad you agree to keep Pnethood.

Re Dillo. If you feel the old Dillo is buggy I'd rather you keep this one. But up to you as ever. I trust your judgement.

This is still getting me a bit Don, what you are saying is the the bookmarks work fine but you don't like the fonts, Oh you can change the fonts in the /root/.dillo/dillorc file :)
Have you played around with the fonts? the reason why if I remove dillo 8.6 and go back to dillo 8.5 this is a list of changes that will be lost. How about changing your fonts to what you like and post the /root/.dillo/dillorc file and I'll use that and keep 8.6.
what ever you want 8.5 or 8.6. I think personally, it would be better to change the fonts and not the browser.

Posting from my full install of RC5 ,on the trusty P3 test box. :) Everything appears to be working fine......including Dillo.
I agree with davesurrey, I see no reason to revert to an older, buggy version of Dillo but I defer to your judgment.
Back to more testing........

Here's a nice journal That uses latest gcrypt to encrypt the password, I included gcrypt with the packages.
Also if you edit the preferences you can added defaultbrowser, imagviewer, media player, Then when your writting a journal you can add a weblink that will open firefox and display the page when clicked. Like live bookmarks. etc

If anyone would like to see a free local newspaper, well Its not that local, its about a 70min drive away from where I am, the local one doesn't post online like this one does, anyways its really nice how it works and zooms in, Reminds me of the microfilm that libraries used to use.

I have been accused of trying to introduce the inclusion of a buggy and out of date dillo browser, ie, dillo 0.8.5-i18n-misc.

Just to clear the air and get an understanding of what happened in the past and to show where the dillo_0.8.5-4.1.pet the source of the dillo 0.8.5-i18n-misc browser came from I submit the following:
ttuuxxx on page 194 of this thread wrote:Don That is why I am here, to help and educate new users and have some fun along the way :)

I made up another version of dillo, this is how you install it(emphasis and spacing added)

1-st delete /root/.dillo <--hidden file so press the binoculars in root :)
2-nd install the pet package below
3-rd click Menu--> Refresh Menu
now try it :)
ttuuxxx
This is my last word on this subject!

By the way, several of the contributors in this thread remind me of little schoolboys in "show and tell".
