USB Thumb Drive Prices Dropping

#1 Post by babbs »

Ok, two things up front... I know I overstated the obvious in the subject, and I'm not intending this to be considered spam. (I have never ordered from these guys, but I've heard pretty good things about them. I must also point out that I have no connections or financial interest in this company.)

I was following the links in the "Puppy OEM computer?" thread ( http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=5659 ), and I happened to stumble on USB thumb drives at TigerDirect.com. What really caught my eye was the price of 1GB drives and the low prices they had for 4GB drives.

I don't know how these prices compare to other online distributers, but these prices are lower than any I've seen in my local area. (I don't know what their shipping fees are.)

4GB SanDisk Cruzer Mini (US$159.99): http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... =S153-3026

USB Flash drive prices and bootability

#3 Post by rwilliams »

In Feb 2006 I got a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 1.0 GB at Costco for $49. I think I saw somewhere here that this model is supposed to be able to boot Puppy. I have not tried because I have not yet learned how, but I would love to be able to boot my puppy 105 from my Sandisk Cruzer as well as store my pup data file there ON ONE SMALL SOLID STATE DEVICE. For me that would be the ultimate advance. NO HARD DISKS AND NO CD OR DVD NECESSARY! FANTASTIC!

I received on Friday a 1 gig Memorex Travel Drive, which I purchased from buy.com for $50 (free shipping) with a $20 rebate from Memorex (which I'll mail soon). It boots the Puppy 2.0 alpha (though slowly) from an installation created by the new universal installer. Haven't tried 1.0.8 on it yet.

This was a special offer, which may have expired by now.

I have one of these, and its presently configured to boot Puppy 1.0.7 (previously with 1.0.5-Chubby and 1.0.6). :D
Initially, some people were having problems with the SanDisk Mini line, but I think those issues have been overcome.
