Quirky 021 feedback
This is the first release candidate, so I have prepared a preliminary detailed announcement and release notes:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... OT_YET.htm
Note that Woof now has a skeleton of that page, at /usr/share/doc/release-skeleton.htm, that other distro builders can customise, like I have done for the upcoming Quirky 1.0.
Get Quirky 021 from here:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... uirky-021/
One thing that I am hoping to do for the final is integrate download and install of the commercial Nvidia Xorg driver, if the Xorg Wizard detects Nvidia hardware. That is, you can get going with vesa driver, get connected to the Internet, then there will be an offer to install an Nvidia PET package, which will configure everything automatically. Well, that would be nice, just a hope for now.

Choosing probe allows me to choose the correct resolution but I see the mouse pointer on a black screen. CTL-ALT-BACK gets my to the prompt and when I ran xorgwizard and chose vesa , then startx, the screen came up at the correct resolution

The selector box for choosing graphics res
has only two choices
(yes you can scroll up and down but
someone as stupid as me sometimes forgets to do this)
it used to have four)
Sorry if that is irrelevant - too picky
Puppy Quirky using the earlier Seamonkey worked at full screen with BBC Iplayer (Flash based)
something Puppy Lucid can not do at present - so that is pleasing
Another thing - this may not be possible by default
When I click on the title bar of a program it does not maximise
I have to click on the maximise icon.
Again a detail
The package manager looks very underpopulated
It was great to have quick download and burning
(very important on slower connections)
Be interested how others get on
For me it seems very complete
As usual my hardware fail to work with xorg
Edit. Probe gives a pink/green thing
so I did ctrl+alt+back and somehow ended up with vesa which works rather okay.
So looking forward that the coming NV driver maybe allow a proper nvidia usage?

Seamonkey used to work with folkmusic on www.sr.se and www.nrk.no but not Q21. svtplay.se works well though. but that is due to vesa and not xorg.# report-video

Quirky 021 is great, Barry. Video works and fonts are beautifully rendered. The only minor things I found when updating using a quirkysave.2fs from earlier version:
1. I had to run fixmenus to restore my added apps to the menu.
2.PuppyPin was overwritten so I had to replace the desktop icons for my added apps.
3. Seamonkey did not fill the screen even when maximised. There was an area at the bottom with a red ^ in it. Installing seamonkey-2.0.4-q1.pet fixed the problem.
4. My longstanding gripe that user's selected locale is overwritten with en_US locale on upgrade.
I haven't tested on my laptop yet. Is the updated firmware for the p54usb kernel driver (wireless networking) included in this build? I will not know as I am upgrading using a quirkysave.2fs with the necessary firmware already added.

keyboard wizard crashes for VIA_KM400AcerV193
Test system
AMD Athlon, 900MHz, 2010MB RAM
PuppyHardwareProfile=VIA_KM400AcerV193
Display: 1280x1024x24
One one of my desktops the system crashes when I try to change keymap. This old bug strikes when I use the Puppy Setup window. Using the command # input-wizard from the console yields the response
loadfont: KDFONTOP: Invalid argument
but the changing of the keymap works OK.
My conjecture for a remedy is to replace in the /usr/sbin/input-wizard file
[ "$FONTMAP" ] && gzip -dcf /lib/consolefonts/${FONTMAP}.gz | loadfont
with
[ "$FONTMAP" ] && setfont -m /lib/consolefonts/${FONTMAP}.gz

Nvidia PET package
I have created a PET package for the commercial Nvidia Xorg driver:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01548
Actually, I wrote the post-install script 'pinstall.sh' in the PET, but haven't tested that it works. When I tested the Nvidia driver, I made changes manually, then afterward I wrote the script. Other than a typo, it should be ok.
Curious thing, the Busybox depmod is required before loading the 'nvidia' kernel module.

second test. Using the /usr/share/examples/omelette.swf file.
Takes 5 seconds with Vesa driver but now when I use the choice NV driver then it takes 11 seconds using Seamonkey.
When I look at streaming video using the Vesa driver then it looks good.
When I look at it using the NV driver then I get seasick due to the delayed rendering that goes like mechanical manequins from year 1500 or somebody role playing they are a quriky Robot that use pneumatic lever something. Looks terrible.
So hope you don't tell Distrowatch before this is solved.

Billtoo,
thanks indeed for your patience with my noobness.
Worked very good.
Before it said I had
nv
now it says I have
NVidia.
Went from, 10 second for the Omelette.swf to 5 seconds and the streaming video on CNN looks perfect so thanks indeed for describing how I could do this pet.
Super!

Hi Barry,
Tested your commercial Nvidia 195.36.15 Xorg driver in lupu-113 and quirky-021. In both it appeared to install but the configuration program is not available so don't know whether it's working or not. There is also no menu item or /usr/share/applications/nvidia.desktop file in either.
Attached for info are some of the /etc/
X11/xorg.conf files in quirky-021
The "report-video" results below are for quirky, the results for lupu does not have an entry in the "Driver used by Xorg:" section.
Hope this helps, this driver is great for those of us that have Nvidia cards.
Thanks,
Jim

Nvidia PET package
Ok, more information about my Nvidia PET package.
Xorg Wizard
If you want to test the Xorg Wizard, see if it plays nice with the installed Nvidia PET package, please first edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, change line 'Disable "glx"' to 'Load "glx"'.
nvidia-settings
I haven't around to creating a menu entry yet, but the configuration utility is there. Open a terminal and type "nvidia-settings".
Alternate PETs
Great news, CatDude has created two PETs:

When you install the Nvidia PET, a message pops up telling you to restart X. It should "just work".Jim1911 wrote:Tested your commercial Nvidia 195.36.15 Xorg driver in lupu-113 and quirky-021. However, it seems that you need the "legacy" Nvidia driver, see CatDude's post:

https://bkhome.org/news/
I did restartX and the system has also been rebooted. My BFG NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS 512MB works fine with the Nvidia 195 driver compiled by gray using pup-431 and LH-443 and can utilize the features of that driver. Also that driver is used with Ubuntu. I have already tested Catdude's Nvidia 173 driver which works fine on my system with wary-020, it does not work on quirky-021 or lupu-113.Barry wrote:However, it seems that you need the "legacy" Nvidia driver, see CatDude's post:

Oh, yes, looking here, clicking "Supported products" tab, it seems your video is supported by my PET package:
