heheh, here I am testing Quirky 104 and you already launch the Qrky 1.1 something.

Sadly they are very slow on iblio. Can you upload it or ask Playdays or Micko to upload it to the server they use for Lupu 5.0
That one download in 35 seconds while iblio takes one hour or more.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Try this one (in Europe):

ftp and Lupu

#4 Post by drongo »

I'm running Lupu-500 with Firefox. I can't download the Quirky 1.1 iso. I presume if I download the Fireftp extension for Firefox everything will work, but previosly I am pretty sure everything from ibiblio worked with http or is my memory misleading me?

Supercharged internet

#7 Post by drongo »

Hey nooby,

I know you have some of the fastest internet on the planet in Sweden, but I thought that just covered Stockholm. 35 seconds and 5 seconds? That's outrageously fast.

Quirky and Lupu dont work with my hardware. Guess its the Xorg/Intel thing, but I hate it when later versions of distros actually work worse than earlier ones :)
That does not seem to be quite what we are looking for.................

Yes surprising it turn out that way here too.

Puppy 431 can do spotify using wine. Quirky 021 and Q 1.00 can do spotify using wine but both Q104 or Q 1.0 rc1 and Q110 failes wit hsame symptoms.

The X desktop totally crash to the linux prompt and xwin bring the desktop back but trying spotify crash again.

Could be the nvidia thing.

Because if I remember me not sure I did a proper xorg install of nivida in the puppies that works me most likely have only vesa in them.

I go test spotify on Q 1.00 again and doing the report-video in CLI

Edit here I am back in Quirky 1.00
# report-video
VIDEO REPORT: Quirky, version 100

Chip description:
oem: NVIDIA
product: G98 Board - 5610001u Chip Rev

Driver used by Xorg:
nvidia

Video mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 16 Depth: "Display"

Looks like I managed to do xorg and nvidia there too and surprise spotify does survive while it does crash the whole xorg desktop to prompt in both RC1 and Qrky110 have not tested in Lupu 5.00 have I? Not sure.
It failed to do local radio so no need to complete it with wine and spotify.

I guess I stick with Q1 then. Love the name of Quirky Linux 1.00 That is my style. :)

Mplay still will not play when one attempts to listen to feeds from shoutcast.net

Has anyone gotten it to work? Settings?

Thanks

Like I said in the other thread, it works for me, but it's VERY slow to cache. Maybe your internet connection is slower than mine and mplayer times out before it can get the stream started.

I gave up on it and installed Helix instead.

I'm in Quirky 1.00 now and seems to have gxine set as Firefox player so when I did try your suggest I got it to play both two different BlueGrass stations in USA and one Folk music station in Turkey and I trust that show that gxine can do the job even if mplayer don't which I have no idea how to test.

Running from Quirky 1.1 Final now

I notice that in the taskbar tray on the RHS, there is a little problem with the area that contains the network connection blinker. The top of the blinker is slightly truncated and will not allow a second blinker to display if say a wlan dongle is inserted and correctly configured and connected.

Also, on switching to the Black-vg JWM theme and then back to say the default theme the tray retains the black background that was used in the Black-vg theme.

This Black-vg theme also seemed to cause problems in Lupu. There, the window icons seem to disappear off the top of the screen on occasion. This theme appears broken on my system. If anyone else has experienced this, it may be time to consider retiring this theme from Puppy/Quirky. Pity, it is one of my favourites.

On the subject of WLAN I needed to modprobe the option module in order to be able to connect to my AP. Interface is detected OK though - just a connection problem. I used Barry's Simple Connect Wizard for this.

Try this;
In Mplayer select edit-Preferences
On the player tab-
make sure these settings look ok for your system. Make sure the audio setting is set for your audio setup.
on the Mplayer tab-
if enable mplayer cache is selected I would set it to 32K
In general look at all the settings in preferences for looking ok.
Changing the audio setting and cache worked for me.

Good call. Under Plugin, I set the Cache Size to 32K and now streams start almost immediately.

Minor icon bug

#17 Post by drongo »

The connect icon in the help file doesn't match the one on the desktop, which is about as unhelpful as a help file can be.

Since all versions of Puppy are now using different icon sets my guess is that this file needs to be edited for every new release.

I don't click on the helpfile that often so this may have been the case for some time.

I mean the "two barks" helpfile at the top of the screen which you get on first booting. Not the helpfile you find at the bottom left.

It's almost immediate if using mplayer vs gnome-mplayer. For easy clicking, just script.
