Fatdog64-500 rc3

#1 Post by kirk »

Jamesbond and myself are announcing Fatdog64-500rc3. This will be the last rc before the final, which will come out once Firefox 3.6.4 goes final.

This is a complete 64 bit build with the T2 trunk:

Xorg 7.5
GCC 4.4.3
Cups 1.4.2
Gimp 2.6.8
FireFox 3.6.4rc
Kino 1.3.3
HandBrake snv 2/2010
Ripperx 2.7.2
openbox / Lxpanel
linux-2.6.34
Blackberry modem support for Verizon.
Xine-UI 0.99.6
libxine 1.1.18.1
x11vnc
TightVNC-viewer
Pidgin 2.7.0

Xorg auto configures itself and the default keyboard is "US" and the default timezone is gmt -5. You can change these in the setup menu. The old xorgwizard is still there, renamed xorgwizard-old. If you want a detailed xorg.conf go to Menu - Setup - Xorg Video Wizard.
Firefox (and Xine) runs as user spot, anything you download goes into the Downloads folder on the desktop. At the first shutdown, after making your save file, you'll be asked if you want to move the Downloads folder to the same place as your save file. Most will want to answer yes to that.
Fatdog64-500 uses many scripts from Woof, but Fatdog64 is not built using Woof due to Fatdog being 64bit.

Changes since alpha2:

* Grub fixed
* Full hd install fixed
* PDF printer fixed
* Gimp crashing (hopefully) fixed
* recompiled GTK for Gimp problem.
* upgrade libxine and Xine-UI

* Fixed time setting in rc.country.
* Fixed the noram option in the initrd.gz.
* Upgrade JWM to 490 (JWM still not recommended).
* Replaced grub with a static version, removed the 32bit libraries required for grub.

* Upgrade kernel to 2.6.34
* Upgrade Firefox to 3.6.4rc
* Replaced xcal with calcoo.
* Replaced Xarchive with Xarchiver
* Lots of other fixes.

I've uploaded the iso, devx, sources and all extra packages built with T2 here:

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... ns/fatdog/

or

ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dist ... ns/fatdog/
.

The T2-packs folder contains all the binary packages the T2 build produced, many not included in the iso.

It is nice. Very nice. Very fast on a 64bit system
Firefox (and Xine) runs as user spot, anything you download goes into the Downloads folder on the desktop.
OK I did not read this but on my system
it went into /root/spot/Downloads

I liked the go-open office and potential of java sfs
the algebra sfs is not for me
but for mathematicians is ideal
(can not remember how to turn on java
- I think this was a problem previously)

Had to ensure I cleared all old remnants of previous fatdog64.sfs
from my hard drive - this is a known necessity.

Kino seems very stable -
may have to devote some more time to it
Really seems to work well

the puppy package manager when you click on
update - white on yellow? Unreadable
Just downloading Oneshot
- I think JamesBond compiled that - hope it works

OK must finish there
time to play with a Fatdog

Many thanks :)

Yes the folder on the desktop points to there. At first shutdown you are asked if you want to move that to the same location as your save file. One thing though, if you already have a folder named "Downloads" in the same location as your save file, it doesn't get linked correctly, so move/rename/delete it before shutting down the first time.

Yes, I should have mentioned that!

Also, Jamesbond has found a couple ways of making Skype work in Fatdog64.

Hi Kirk,

Great work, the speed and stability is amazing. Auto-configuration was flawless.

One serious problem though. Alsaconf finds the hda-intel Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICHIO Family) HD Audio Controller and appears to set it up properly, however no sound. Clicking on AlsaMixer just gets a flicker. Clicking on it's desktop icon cause the screen to go to black. The menu bar is available and a restartX restores the desktop.

Kudos,
Jim :D

Jim1911,

Ah the dreaded alsa problem again :(

Try to run alsamixer directly in terminal, and let us know what you see. How to do this - open terminal, then in terminal just type "alsamixer".
Also, from terminal, can you please tell me what's the content of /proc/asound/cards and /proc/asound/modules?
If possible, please also create a gzipped copy of dmesg (open terminal, and then type

Code: Select all

dmesg | gzip - -9f > dmesg.gz
then upload it here.

Lob,
Let me know if the openshot works for you. If it does, I'm probably going to remove that pet and replace it with an SFS instead.

Thanks, jamesbond, when I started following your instructions above, my first command was alsamixer which resulted in no file found. /proc/asound/modules empty /proc/asound/cards --- no soundcards ---
I next executed the Alsamixer-sound-mixer.desktop which deleted the icons and gave me a black screen with the menu bar. Then I rebooted, and tried again.

After the reboot, Alsamixer came up properly when executed from a console, so I tried a test file and the sound is working perfectly now. Sorry, I should have done more testing before I reported it as a problem. Hopefully, it will continue to work after additional reboots.

Both cards and modules now have entries:
/proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf7ff8000 irq 55
1 [pcsp ]: PC-Speaker - pcsp
Internal PC-Speaker at port 0x61
/proc/asound/modules
0 snd_hda_intel
1 snd_pcsp

There is no speaker icon on the menu bar and the Alsamixer-sound-mixer.desktop now starts AlsaMixer, but continues to provide a black screen and erases all icons, menu is operational and restartX restores the desktop. The exec line in the desktop file is unusual in that it uses Exec=xterm -e alsamixer instead of just alsamixer, maybe that's the reason for the black screen.

You and Kirk have really done a fine job with this distribution.
Again kudos,
Jim :D

The go-oo is a big rough for now. You can open openoffice by typing "soffice" at the terminal.

I will fix both later.

cheers!

I'm really enjoying checking this distribution out. Amazed at the wealth of 64bit pets and sfs that you already have made available.

Successfully installed and working great:
1. nvidia-195.36.15-amd64.pet
2. go-oo_32_amd64-2.sfs (just needed icons & menu entries)
3. jre160_amd64.sfs
4. tuxkart-0.4.0.pet
5. Startmount-0.5.3.pet (from forum)

Unsuccessful:
1. fbreader-0.12.10-amd64.pet (works when necessary file is installed)

Code: Select all

# FBReader
FBReader: error while loading shared libraries: liblinebreak.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
2. p7zip_9.04-amd64.pet - no menu entry, don't know what code to run in console.

Cheers,
Jim

No worries Jim. I got the idea from Jemimah, who did puppeee. She included the most amazing stuff in it, and I like so much, so I think - I also want this in my bigger laptop :D

FBReader needs liblinebreak (which is also on the repo) - get it and it will work. Apparently the dependency-checking doesn't work, otherwise it should have prompted you to download liblinebreak automatically.

Yeah the go-oo is a bit rough, it's just a direct extraction of the *.deb files and conversion to SFS. I'll make the icons and menu entries and then re-upload.

jre is java - is missing the plugins. See the post I gave to lobster to make sure java works from Firefox. I'll fix it up later as well.

p7zip is a dependency for xarchiver, it will make xarchiver able to open 7z-compressed files. You can access it from terminal by running "7z"

As per alsa - I'm happy that it works. Google told me your ICHIO chipset is actually supported in alsa version 1.0.22.1 - which is the version used in FD64 now (previous versions used 1.0.21). The ubuntu folks had some problems as well, which was resolved when they upgraded to 1.0.22.1. Your motherboard must be very nice.

As for the blank screen and lxpanel dying, let me guess - you choose Setup/ALSA Sound Wizard, did you? Because AlsaMIxer is actually available in Multimedia/AlsaMixer, and that is working fine (it doesn't kill lxpanel). That xterm -e alsamixer is fine - it's just telling the window manager that we need to run alsamixer in a terminal.

On the other hand, running ALSA Sound Wizard did the same thing to me - it kills the lxpanel, because it is supposed to do that - to kill any process that is using sound. In this case, the panel is using volume control, so it gets killed.

It's unfortunate really, ALSA Wizard is next to useless these days. Most ALSA features are auto-configured. It is only useful for legacy devices. So I think we should put a large warning dialog - if sound works, do not run it at all.

cheers!

I'm going to remove it from the menu. Would somebody with a 64bit system really need it.

Guys if you have a 64bit rig - get the Fatdog, make sure it works
for you - yep be selfish :D

It did not
would not even open :cry:
x start
then reboot
then from command line
then tried adding python pet

Nada - nothing

I was reduced to attempting to fathom Kino again
Kino was very stable - just there was a stable creature
trying to use it - me (the ass)

However it is there and I will be trying again soon.

Regarding the influence of Jemimah . . .
Go a bit further and nab her excellent choice of icons
and anything else tasty

Actually fbreader-0.12.10-amd64.pet was used, I wasn't aware that the dependencies are checked automatically for pets. I tried to run it in a console where I discovered the missing dependency and just copied over the necessary file from Kubuntu64.

Thanks again,
Jim

I did use the Setup/ALSA Sound Wizard before I tried playing any sound. I tried again with no save file and found that sound is configured automatically. So running the Alsaconf is what messed up my sound.

Jim

EDIT: Thanks Jim for confirming that sound is now ok with the updated alsa. I've sent a patch to kirk that will warn user not to mess with alsaconf if the system thinks that sound is already working.

cheers!

Lob, sorry didn't inform your earlier - thought I already said that in the beta3 thread ==> You need python in devx to make openshot works.
I didn't try it with any other python pet, and I don't think we have released any standalone python pet yet, so the pet you got must be for 32-bit python which *will not* work.

Good idea, I like Jemimah's icons, but let's make the dog work first, then we'll talk about making it pretty :p

Anyone wanting to use openshot without having to use devx, I'm currently uploading python pet. It will be there shortly.

EDIT: I've also re-uploaded zarfy, fbreader, and evince which will show correct menu entries.

java working - thanks
Openshot working (I think - running) got rid of the 32 bit pet and installed 007's :P new 64bit python pet :)

Good news about the plans for pooch pampering Puppeee style
- We really should have this as the first official 64bit Puppy . . .

Time to shoot my first Faddog64 Puppy production
Hope it works . . .

Thanks guys - just to confirm

expected, kernel change in rc3 - old save files contains modules from previous kernel.

Glad to hear that, let me know whether it is actually working ! I spent about 5 mins in it, make sure all the menu is working etc ... but didn't actually carry out any video editing and exporting. So let me know.
