rawstudio, ufraw pets?

#2 Post by otropogo »

Rawstudio is a standalone Raw file editor for Windows or Linux. It has been described as the fastest in this field.

UFRaw is available standalone and as a plug-in for Gimp. Muggins (IIRC) created a plugin for UFRaw a while back, but I haven't been able to get it to work in Puppy 4.3.1.

Both would be very useful to anyone using Raw files in Puppy.

Hello Otropogo,

Can you give more info on the errors you receive, if you try running ufraw from the commandline? Otherwise, I'll download 431 & have a look in a day or so.

Have just checked, as I was posting from memory, and found that my original post isn't quite accurate.

UFRAW does work, but not as it should. If I click on a RAW image file, nothing happens. If I right click to get "open with" UFRAW isn't listed.

I CAN open a RAW file only by opening UFRAW from the Graphics menu and then navigating to the RAW file ans selecting it - a very tedious and time-consuming process. I don't know how to create a working UFRAW icon on the desktop to which I could drag and drop a file, nor how to make it the default app for RAW.

RAWSTUDIO doesn't work at all. It's listed in the "open with" list for RAW, but clicking on it does nothing. It's also listed in the graphics menu, but doesn't open when clicked on there.

I haven't tried installing your pet for GIMP yet, as I need to back up my 2fs file first.

Thanks.

But I note that the version number shown on your pet is 0.13, whereas the current version shown on UFRAW's linux page is 0.17:

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/Install.html

Can you make a pet directly from the source material there, using the latest version?

If not, will give your pet a try later today or tomorrow (after I've saved my 2fs file)and let you know . I'll also install your GIMP pet at the same time.

PS: There is also a deb package for a recent version of Rawstudio at:

http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/linux/debian/poo ... rawstudio/

Both of these programs only work to display RAW format image files, typically used on DSLR and high end digicams. These files are generally quite large (25MB+) and are often very slow to load and manipulate, especially on older computers. If you'd like some sample RAW files to help you test the pets, I'd be happy to e-mail you some.

Thanks. Afraid nothing works though. I tried the following:

Looked for and found a pet called ufraw-0.16 - i486.pet

Checked my installed version - ufraw-0.15 - i486.pet

uninstalled 0.15, Petget reported it uninstalled

installed 0.16, petget reported it installed in Graphics folder

tried opening it, nothing happens. Tried clicking on RAW file, nothing happesn. Looked for it in the "open with" list for RAW - not there.

Uniinstalled with petget. reportedly uninstalled, but I see that the menu entry remains in graphiics program list.

installed your version. petget reports install successful, but no entry in graphics menu. There's no icon on the desktop, but I note that "ufraw" still has a tab under graphics. Clicking on it does nothing. Clicking on a RAW file does nothing. Ufraw is not listed in the "open with menu".

Installed your gimp with petget. Petget reports install successful, entry under grpahics. I go to graphics menu, but no entry for gimp. No desktop icon, and no listing in "open with" menu for Jpeg or raw files. Yet petget shows both gimp and your ufraw pet installed.

Uninstalled your ufraw pet "successfully". ufraw still shows in the graphics menu.

re-installed ufraw-0.15-i486.pet. It works again, but only if I navigate to the RAW file via the apps internal file manager. Unfortunately, the program's window doesn't provide either a manual path field or a next/prvious file option.

Uninstalled Gimp pet, and got back 34MB of space.

Extremely frustrating!

Redone my copy of Gimp-2.6.8-2

#10 Post by GrumpyWolfe »

Hi all

Sorry but goofed on my copy of gimp-2.6.8-2 this one needs the glibc-2.11 and the glibc-locales so to that end here is the links

http://code.google.com/p/mywolfe/downlo ... t&can=4&q=

Locales
http://code.google.com/p/mywolfe/downlo ... t&can=4&q=

and now the redone gimp
http://code.google.com/p/mywolfe/downlo ... t&can=2&q=

Barry Kauler has his pet of Gimp here does not need glibc 2.11
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dis ... 6-dpup.pet

For otropogo

To create a open with link go to a picture and right click on a picture select the open with command you will need to customize and it will open a rox window of where you will need to make a syslink for gimp to. Open another rox window and go to /usr/bin find the gimp icon and drag it to the sendto rox window when popup displays select absolute link and you will have a new open with command to work with.

I found your latest post a bit unclear, but assumed the data pet needed to be installed after the main gimp pet. So I downloaded it, and re-installed Gimp.

As before, petget said it would create a gimp tab in the grpahic menu, but no such tab appeared.

I installed the gimp data pet, and looked again.

I then looked in /usr/bin for a Gimp icon, and couldn't find one. I do note that some 40+ MB have been used up, but have no idea what they're being used for.

Have now tried installing Barry's dpup gimp pet. It also left no tab or icon to use, but it did leave several icons with gimpish names in /usr/bin. However, clicking on any of them does nothing on my system.

Thanks. I tried the Rawstudio pet just now.Petget reported it installed but also that ti "does not have a menu entry"

That's not quite true, as removing the previous version didn't remove the rawstudio tab in the graphics menu. However, there was no rawstudio icon in /usr/bin/ before I ran your pet, and there was one after.

Unfortunately, neither the menu tab nor clicking on the icon in /usr/bin/ opened the program.

I ran petget again to remove it, and it remove it from /usr/bin, but not from the graphic menu.

I'm running Puppy 4.3.1

Otropogo,

I've no idea why you're experiencing problems with my ufraw .pet. I just booted into p431, installed first libgtkimageview-1.6.1.pet, then ufraw-0.16-i486.pet, then downloaded an example Nikon .NEF raw image, right-clicked it & set the run action to ufraw "$1", and the result is the attached image.

Also, if you wanted it on the desktop, just drag /usr/share/applications/ufraw.desktop onto the desktop.

On second thought, which kind of raw images are you using? Maybe they're not supported by ufraw?

Sorry, doesn't work here. I did following:

1. installed tiff-lib pet

2. installed new rawstudio pet

3. checked petget to see both listed as installed

4. checked /usr/bin to see rawstudio icon displayed

5. checked graphics menu to see rawstudio tab

6. clicke on tab - no cigar

7. clicked on rawstudion gear icon in /usr/bin - nothing happened

8. added rawstudio to "open with" menu for RAW files, got error message "file exists", clicked on menu entry - nothing happens.

The RAW file type is recognized by Puppy as x-panasonic-RAW. I don't think that can be the problem, because I have displayed these files in rawstudio under Linux previously.
