Wary 0.3 (030) feedback Subject description: Woof-built pup with Xorg 7.3+ and kernel 2.6.27.47 (IDE) |
|
The previous Wary thread (020) is here:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=54728
Wary 030 is announced here:
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01657
Download:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/quirky/wary-030/
This is exciting stuff, an old kernel with Squashfs4 and the latest Aufs2. And maybe, perhaps, ext4 support. It is configured for uni-processors and the old IDE drivers -- meaning that you internal hard drives will show up as /dev/hda etc.
-- the internal IDE optical drive will also be /dev/hd*.
Have fun!

Quick test on two machines , live pfix=ram.
My trusty P3 test box( 733 mhz/256 mb ram/1gb swap)..........repeated kernel panic....never loaded.
My main Linux box (2.0 ghz/1 gb ram/ 1 gb swap)...................running it now. At first glance appears to be working fine. No problems with internet connection, display or sound.

I'm running wary 030 on a fairly new computer with an AMD Phenom II quadcore cpu and ati hd3200 graphics.
Running live with a save file.
The best resolution I can get is 1280x1024, even when choosing 1920x1080 so the screen has a stretched look
I compiled vlc 1.06 and it works fine, plays dvd's perfectly (same as in quirky 1.20) but when I exit vlc it gives a segmentation fault. That also happens in quirky 1.20.
Flash videos at cnn and youtube videos play perfectly.
That's it so far.

New frugal installation on an ext4 partition. Setup was flawless, everything appears to be working correctly, all drives are properly recognized as indicated by desktop photo.
System: BFG NVIDIA Geforce 8400 GS 512MB, Asus P6T Motherboard, Intel core i7-920 (8MB Cache, 2.66 GHz), DDR3 3GB 1333MHz ram, Pioneer DVR-2910 DVD+-RW Dual Layer Burner, Realtek ALC1200 Audio, HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One

Went back to the old P3 test box and did a fresh manual frugal installation on a ext 3 partition. On the initial boot all configuration went smoothly and everything seems to work correctly.
Shows and correctly identifies all the partitions too.

Wary 03 running all day on IBM Thinkpad T23 without any problems at all.
Hmmm.......I like this. Like the latest SeaMonkey too.
Will use Wary exclusively for a while, and stand down (sit down?) Puppy 4.3.1..
Puppy's been my first choice O/S since version 1.0.3.
Great work Barry. How on earth do you manage to continually work so hard? Some of us are sure glad that you do.
Tedward
UPDATE
No luck with 2nd old computer, although 4.3.1.runs fine on it.
Problem is that xvesa is unable to be selected manually via the option screen, so it heads off to xorg (which I know won't work) and then locks up in a black screen (rather like Sage's report). Tuff.
UPDATE 2. No luck with 3rd computer either. That one has the same Xorg/Xvesa trouble too, and ends in a locked up black screen. Usually works OK on XORG but not this time.
However I am actually typing this on the IBM T23 Thinkpad, so that one still works OK on WARY.
UPDATE 3. None of these 3 computers will work on XVESA. I presume that the select option is broken?

Ok
Old P3 600 coppermine, vanta graphics, 256 RAM..
Booted ok, but vesa selected by xorgwizard by default, reran and "chose" nv, that worked fine, nv now used in xorg.conf.
No sound. All puppies and puplets (including slaxer-pup.. with a 2.6.27.x kernel and Lupu/Quirky with latest kernels) have found my sound card OOTB. Tried alsawizard, didn't work. Here's the error when trying to play a sound..

ndiswrapper worked fine with my TI card and SNS (you know the one Barry, I think you have the same card )
No kernel except for the really retro ones have been happy on this machine. Usually they run fine but if the machine is left idle for a couple of hours I come back to a blank screen lock-up. (have tried with different video cards, this one, an old Riva and and an S3 pci card). The old 2.6.18 kernels seem to work well with this box. We'll see how this one goes.
Cheers and thanks for Wary.

In the Atom combo board, only Xvesa works, and Network wireless can't connect via RTL 8180 PCI (working since 412).

I loaded Wary 030 on my Acer Aspire 1350 laptop using a Netgear WG111 usb adaptor. Basically, it works but the wireless connection set up using SNS is not saved after reboot. Using Network Wizard I am able to reboot with a connection.
I have also seen some garbled browser screens on Seamonkey, Firefox and Opera (10.10) but am unable to replicate at the moment. Is this some kind of video issue?
On shutdown there is a repeated error message which moves too quickly for me to capture. However it includes :
udevd-event[6131] unlink-secure ............ failed

Once I was informed that I needed to change "sda2" to "hda2" in my GRUB menu.lst file Wary 0.3 (030) booted fine.
I had grown accustomed from Lucid 500 and Quirky to manually selecting VESA on this Panasonic Toughbook CF-29 with the Intel 82852/855GM graphics chipset but when I did so in Wary I got a gray screen - after a cold reboot I chose Probe and xorg worked again as it had in 4.31
The default Web browser works fine as it handled both http://foxnews.com and
http://media.myfoxtampabay.com/myfoxhurricane/
both of which have challenged some other Puppy/browser combos.
Will post further as I explore more but so far Wary 0.3 looks real good!

On a Pavilion p2 400mhz, 128mb ram, it would load as far as the
window manager. Would not open rox, desktop background.
Will need a little more ram for that one.
Edit; Loaded fine on second try.
Inspiron p3, 800mhz, 256mb ram;
Inspiron 700m 1.6ghz, 1gb ram.
No problems loading or shutting down with xorg or vesa.
No special cheatcodes needed.
Edit; needs acpi=force for reboot on 700m full install.
Mplayer has little red marks on dvd select, will not open any dvd
from menu.
Would be nice if it could use a media player from the 4.xx series.
So far, the Gxine that was in Lupu 501 has been the best for dvd.
On multi-boot with earlier Puppies, an ext4 install can not be seen
or mounted from the earlier ones.
With an ext3 install, it can eventually be found with pmount, mutt.

For those of us on dialup, could a wary-020.iso___wary-030.iso.delta be provided?
TIA (and hope it's not all that radical of a wary change..)
