One of the big BIOS makers sold their fast booting Linux to HP
"Phoenix Technologies" name it Hyperspace. Works like more known Splashtop which also goes under under names.
My incredibly naive take on it is that we only have to find 12 million Linux users and persuade them to sponsor one dollar each and we could pay the BIOS making companies to give us hardware that works with Linux.
They can do it if they get paid for it. That is given evidence for now.
Don't we paint ourselves into a corner by insisting that we never should pay for the needed hardware compatibility?
We need to create a market that makes it rewarding to make hardware for Linux.
Am I wrong?

A friend of mine recently bought a netbook, and it came with splashtop installed.
I looked at it, it seemed nice. Browser, image viewer, video/audio player.
It's actually a funny story. I booted the PC using the Windows XP that came by default, and it didn't detect any wireless conections - even though it actually detected the network card.
Booting "splashtop", OTOH, allowed my friend to connect himself to the internet right away using the neighbor's wi-fi. He said something like "bleh, nevermind, this works just the same.".

There so mixed opinions on this thing.
I found users that wanted to delete the feature. They had only scorn to say.
I would love to have such fast connection to check if something new has happen on this forum and look at news in media and then just shut it down.
As far as I know Puppy are not good at sleep modes?

I know too little about what embedded means.
There are at least three competing versions. Not sure how similar they are.
You have Splashtop. I guess ASUS use them. butthey give them their own name. Express Gate
Then you have Google who also have a BIOS version of their Chrome?

Almost all my computers have been Phoenix or Award. But there are other big makers of BIOS too.
What is similar is that all of them have the OS in the same ROM that the BIOS are in so it is always available even without any hard disk.
But I know too little.
My wild thought is that if all ROM are big then all of us could change them by adding a small OS to the BIOS we already have.
Almost all BIOS now are re-loadable at least that is what I have heard.
