Slackpup 0.4 beta

#1 Post by BarryK »

The announcement for 0.3 on my blog:

http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01695

The forum discussion on Spup 0.2:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57110

A major feature of this pup is that Kenel Mode Setting is turned on for Intel 'i915', Nvidia 'nouvea' and ATI 'radeon' kernel modules -- see /etc/modprobe.d
-- if any other hardware needs to have KMS turned on, you can experiment with an appropriate config file in this directory.

Note, the kernel video drivers are at /lib/modules/2.6.34/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/

Find the bugs!

EDIT:
Spup 0.4 has arrived:

http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=01715

You might also find this post on Samba printing to be useful:

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 211#433211

Discussion on 0.4 starts from the bottom of page 3...

Slackpup 0.3 beta is working well. kudos :D :D :D :D :D

Only problem so far is the new nouvea driver. It is found using probe to setup the driver. The display had problems though, small dashes of different colors were scattered over the screen and kept moving around. When exiting to prompt the screen resolution was changed so it was very difficult to see the print. Also, upon shutdown, it went to a black screen. This driver is useless for my hardware.

Choosing nv on reboot worked fine and hopefully a pet will be made of the nvidia 256.36 driver for this distribution.

Thanks,
Jim

Yeah, I'm new to using 'fbcon' kernel module, the frame-buffer console driver, and I don't know how to specify the resolution.

Note, the intel kernel driver doesn't seem to need 'fbcon', seems to have its own console driver. That also has the problem of displaying in a very high resolution, or rather, very small text.

Attached is the Slackware 13.1 ntfsprogs package. It supplies the missing libntfs* shared library.

The ntfsprogs package template in Woof had screened out the shared library, now fixed.

I had to gzip it, as this forum will not accept an .txz file as attachment.
So, download it, then run 'gunzip', then click on this package, then choose Yes button to install...

I installed a pet of wine 14.2rc5 that I made in quirky the other day and it worked well.
I installed safari 5.0 + install_flash_player.exe in wine and safari played flash videos at cnn and youtube perfectly.
Safari ran fast too.
I downloaded firefox from the slackware repo in puppy package manager and it worked perfectly, also downloaded amarok 2.30
from slackware repositories and it has a lot of dependencies.Amarok would come up when I clicked on the menu entry but it showed
a lot of error messages and wouldn't work.
EDIT:
I installed the devx and ran amarok again, only a couple of errors this time and I could load a file.Mp3's won't play but ogg files play fine.

I spent the morning adding applications to spup 030, all pets and others that I compiled in spup 030.Then I did a remaster and burned a new cd, the custom spup iso is 293mb :)
I did a full install on this laptop and so far it is working great, I think it will remain here for quite a while.I am using wine-1.2-rc6 and it is working well on this laptop.
This is good, thanks

Attempting to run Xorg worked but Seamonkey just generated large black areas at the animated Google page. Vesa goes to black at the console mode causing me to do a blind reboot. Audio seems to work as expected.

opera-10.60-6386.i386.linux
/tmp/xerrs.log

Code: Select all

The program 'operapluginwrapper' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 383492 error_code 3 request_code 3 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
havent noticed this youtube video stopper before use in spup although it may be elsewhere as well. stops video and need to reload the page to restart but on long videos of 10 min still unable to get past about half way before the error stops the video.

EDIT; finally got this down. trick is not to resize, move, open or refresh any widows while the video is playing. dont touch anything at all just watch the video.
also be sure the pupsave has enough space for the video go into /tmp after it downloads then you can copy the flash file out of /tmp and play it in gnomeplayer. (and edit it in openshot)
you2pup downloader is failing for me at present.

Thanks, Slackware and Puppy are my 2 favorite distros.

I'm having one problem. The acpi-cpufreq kernel module fails to load with the error 'no such device', so I can't use speedstep on my netbook.

No, the 2.6.34 kernel was configured with SMP disabled. The next release of Slackpup will have an SMP-enabled kernel.
