Connecting Puppy to a Windows (or Samba) Shared Printer |
|
Puppy users who have a Windows shared printer on their network are familiar with the CUPS smb backend. BarryK has been updating the Samba client components and is looking at a replacement backend called smbc. It eliminates the symlink to smbspool and may work better for users who have authentication problems with Windows.
Early adopters may want to test this. The PET below will not affect your current printing setup in any way, except to install the additional backend file into /usr/lib/cups/backend.
When you run CUPS, the new backend is listed as Windows Printer using smbclient. You will install the printer with the URI:
| Code: | | smbc://pcname/printername |
If your Windows machine (or Samba server) requires authentication, there is now an additional file in /etc/samba named printing.auth. Store your login data there. For example:
| Code: | username = spot
password = barkbark
domain = pupgroup |
Install your printer driver as usual.

The latest Slackpup 0.4 has this 'smbc' printing backend.
Spup 0.4 also has a HOWTO for testing this printing:
/usr/share/doc/samba-printing.htm
Note, Patriot is taking a look at the 'smbc' script, to see if it an be improved, also with a view to integrating it into lameSMBxplorer.
Forum member perthie did a basic verification that 'smbc' works:

I have built Spup 0.4 with Samba-tng with only the 'smbclient', 'nmblookup, 'smbsend', 'smbstatus' and 'testparm' utilities, plus the 'mount.cifs' and 'umount.cifs' from Samba 3.0.37:

Anyone with interest in Samba is invited to test this!
If you want the full Samba-tng package to setup a server:

Various other Samba PETs have been uploaded:

last but not least, where to get Spup 0.4:
