I had the same problem...

You have to download the file to Downloads...

Then click on it...

then it works....

barburo, as explained by kirk in earlier pages, please do this:
1) download the hotfix, put it in /root/spot/Downloads
2) then use Rox, open /root/spot/Download, and click it from there. Direct execution will not work because firefox is running under user spot which doesn't have priviledge to install pets.

01smokey, thanks for confirming. This arus_lnx.ko should be deleted in the next iteration of Fatdog. As for skype - I'm not sure there is anything much I can do. I took skype from its website, throw in some 32-bit libraries, and make a pet. Does the webcam work through other means, e.g. try capturing some video via ffmpeg, does it work?

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video -r 25 test.mp4
As for why firefox won't download to /tmp, yes well it runs under spot and spot doesn't have access to /tmp, it can only download to /root/spot/Downloads. This is a security measure - kirk designed all network-related programs to run under spot.

blestina, to use the PPM, please click "configure" and then "update now" first. Then close/exit the PPM and restart again, it will show all the available pets.

cheers!

Good idea. Well implemented. Works.

I have been looking at the screencaster (under graphics)
which Jamesbond pointed out to me.
I missed it, possibly because it was not there.
I had changed to jwm and even when moving back to openbox it was missing . . .
Did a fresh pfix=ram reboot
. . . ah there it is . . . 8)

Screencaster recording of video was working :)
but I am yet to get sound working.
Anyway was able to cobble together this test video
using a sepearate sound recording
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnWLPrZA1iM
This explains how spot is used
/root/spot/downloads
(not download as it says in the video)
to save Firefox downloads

The green sound icon (bottom) bottom right
regularly turns itself to mute mode without my assistance
- possibly when a program such as xine
or other using sound output runs . . .

The USB headset I am using I just got working
with Audacity in Lucid 2.10

Unsure how to get it working . .
there is no mhwavedit or audacity to test
and wavrec does not seem to be on the command line . . .

Update

Just heard audacity is on its way for Fatdog . . . :)

Thanks guys :)

On my other fatdog installs I've added quite a few pets and everything is working well, I compiled a few smaller apps and they work good too,

Thanks for the great pup :)

Billtoo, happy to hear that.

If you have compiled a few apps that you think may be useful for others, and you have packaged into a pet, do let kirk or myself know about it - we can upload it to the repository and share with others.

I've just released some collection of tools for making music with Fatdog64. Announcement here: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 765#433765.

Enjoy.

jamesbond, one application I would like to see added to the 64 bit repository is geeqie. IMHO it is by far the best graphics viewer. It has some great search facilities although a little fat at 1.5M.

Yup, geeqie is the main viewer in puppeee. I'll see what I can do.

EDIT: geeqie is now in the repository.

The above didn't work but this did:

ffmpeg -y -f oss -i /dev/audio -f video4linux2 -s vga -i /dev/video0 ~/a.mpeg
I installed the nvidia-195.36.15-amd64.pet and now Skype video works fine.

This FatDog package is more like a greyhound, very fast.

Good job guys.

I noticed the view option in wallpaper changer is not working. I assume it's because the viewer is not installed. I just set geeqie as the viewer, very nice.

It would be nice to have a lightweight image viewer. I personally like geeqie but something lighter would be good too.

While my mouth is warm I will make a few more requests:

mhWaveEdit as there is no sound recorder in FD64.
Streamtuner and Streamripper would also be nice.
Galculator is very popular.

Thanks.

PS. I'm having a bit of trouble getting sound to work with a mic. Playback is fine. It is neither working in skype or Screencaster.

There's fotoxx and mtpaint.

lakedude,

You're the gnugrid user? It probably wouldn't be too hard to remaster the iso to include the nvidia driver and the gnugrid software. I don't have a nvidia card though.

01smokey, I don't have mhwaveedit but I have compiled audacity with a bunch of other tools in an SFS -- see my previous post. I will look at Galculator, streamripper and streamripper - but as usual, no promises. Problem with the mix - have you configured your mic-boost (or something like that) in alsamixer? (Note - use Alsa Mixer under Multimedia, not Alsa sound wizard under Setup). By default the setting is very low, you need to turn it up before the mic can produce any sound at all.

EDIT: I have uploaded galculator. Streamtuner/Streamripper will have to wait for a while ...

Brian (I always thought you're female - the nick "blestina" sounds female to me hehe), did the previous RCs work with you? If they did, please ensure that you delete any existing fd64-500.sfs from your harddisk, then restart fatdog. Anyway, it would help if you can post the content of /proc/asound/cards and tell me what's your hardware (motherboard, soundcard, etc).

cheers!

Thanks jamesbond.

I will see if I can find the source for mhwaveedit as I have never been that keen on audacity, maybe I need to play with it more.

I have also noticed there are problems with streamtuner, none of the stations are displayed for shoutcast although shoutcast works fine in VLC. VLC has a recording function but unfortunately places everything in one file. Streamripper on the other hand has the ability to separate the songs providing the title and author as the filename. Just a little edit with mhwaveedit and all is good. mhwaveedit has problems with large files recorded with VLC.

I did notice there were two entries for alsamixer, I thought it was an oversight. I will look at both but I had already tried one, not sure which one.

sfs files are one of the strengths of puppy. I generally like to keep the pup_safe file small and place most of my data outside of it such as documents, email and the like. It's also a good idea to have other large applications like Open Office outside too. This means they are accessible from many distros. It's especially useful for email so I can keep all of my emails in the same place no matter what distribution I'm using.

I have often thought it would be good to have a number of theme sfs files such as multimedia and games etc. A quick and simple way to fatten puppy without bloating the pup_save file.

Is it possible to have the menus and desktop icons updated when the sfs is loaded. Most of the sfs files I have used this does not happen so you have to go looking for the executable files. It's not too big a drama for me but will be off-putting to noobs and first time users.

Thanks

Smokey

Yes, I'm the GPUGRID user. I go by "bigtuna" on their site so it is a little confusing, sorry.

Would you like an nVidia card? I just bought a GTX-460 with no free slot to put it in so I've got to get rid of a GT-240 to make room for the GTX-460.

You can have the GT-240 for free, so long as you actually use it (not to sell on eBay to make money).

PM me your address if you want the GT-240.

I've remastered Puppy before so I might be able to handle adding the nVida driver and the GPUGRID software to the ISO. Sounds like a good project for a rainy day.

The GPUGRID folks really like FatDog-64, in fact they are hosting a "mirror" of the ISO on their site.

lakedude,

Thanks for the offer, but the only non-laptop 64bit computer I have is connected to my TV and is difficult to deal with. If you need help with a remaster let me know.

blestina,

For the sound problem, or any problem:

1) Try booting with pfix=ram to make sure there's not something wrong in the pup_save.

2) Make sure that you have not ran the Alsa sound wizard, If you have, go back to step 1.

3) Run the Alsamixer and make sure your outputs are turned up and not muted. The M key mutes and unmutes each output.

4) If you have multiple sound cards or multiple integrated sound cards (and it looks like you do), run the Multiple Sound Card Wizard, and pick the sound card you want to use. You might have to guess if you're not sure. You'll have to reboot after making your selection and then be sure to do step 3 again.

If you're trying to get sound over HDMI, your video driver will need to support that function as well. For ATI you'll need the radeonhd driver or the proprietary fglrx (pet package). For Nvidia you'll probably need the proprietary Nvidia driver (pet package). There seems to be some intel hdmi support in the kernel, but I don't know if the intel video driver supports it yet.
