Lucid Puppy 5.1pre needs testers

Luci-212, the development version of Lucid Puppy is needing testers. We especially need testers who have Intel video graphics chipsets. Lucid Puppy 5.1 will be booting directly to the desktop and there is a subset of Intel graphics chips that are giving problems. We are zeroing in on them but the more testing the easier and quicker it will be. We need to test all graphics, not just the Intel ones.

There are some other new features that will appear in 5.1, including a puppy-lucid repo in Puppy Package Manager that has already more than 50 of the best Linux programs tested and configured for Lucid Puppy. Thanks.

I would like to add ubuntu-wine to the Lucid-Puppy repositories to get the upcoming wine 1.2 packages (currently at 1.2 rc7).

But don't know how.

Wine's Ubuntu-packages are in a ppa-repository which would have an entry in Ubuntu's /etc/apt/sources.list:

The package database is in:

I would like to add ubuntu-wine to the Lucid-Puppy repositories to get the upcoming wine 1.2 packages (currently at 1.2 rc7).

But don't know how.

Open PPM and choose Configure. Then choose to update the databases. It will take a while to change the ubuntu databases to Puppy format. Also put tick marks in the 3 ubuntu repos. Then when it si all done, close and restart PPM and search for wine. Click the results and PPM will show you some info, click Examine Dependencies and it will show you what it thinks also needs to be installed. You can download those or install them directly.

Oh, you don't want the Ubuntu wine, which is wine 1.0. You want the latest from wine. I see I think. Hmm. Lucid Puppy does not use Ubuntu apt or synaptics. We believe there are good reasons for that, since Puppy is not Ubuntu only half or so in the Ubuntu repos will install directly and work correctly--less for complicated programs with many dependencies. In Lucid puppy the Ubuntu repos are for the experimenters. It is possible to add a repo, and I think PPM could handle converting the new repo to Puppy standards.--for that check the Help under Configure in PPM.

only four minor bugs found
1) doesn't display Hebrew and Arabic languages
(solved this by dragging in superior Ubuntu Lucid
DejaVu font)
2) pmusic doesn't play sound files that have
certain characters in name like ` and \
3) mplayer needed preference to be set correctly to
avoid sound distortion
4) mplayer doesn't give accurate details about the
mp3 files that it's playing

I trashed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and rebooted to get
normal startup routine.
I selected nv driver. It works as well.

I have tested (frugal USB install) on two Intel graphics based machines available to me.

The first is ASUS EeePC Model 1201HAB. It uses the Intel SCH Poulsbo graphic chipset. I normally use Lucid 5.01 on this machine. With Luci 212, the display worked right after the first boot. The resolution was not optimum. Running xorgwizard set everything up. The xorg.conf file list the VESA driver as being used. So no problems.

The second machine is ACER Aspire One Model AOA150. It uses the Intel 945GME chip set. With Luci 212, the display worked correct including the needed resolution. No need to use xorgwizard.

Here is suggestion for those encountering the black screen after boot. In working with the Nvidia driver, I encounter this several times. Sometimes, pressing the "Ctrl-Alt-Backspace" (you may have to do this several times) key combination would stop the X server and bring the console prompt back. With the console prompt, one can run xorgwizard. My recommendation at this point is to select VESA for the x server and pick the closest resolution that the display normally uses.

Look for the variable PKG_DOCS_DISTRO_COMPAT In the file root/.packages/DISTRO_COMPAT_REPOS. Attach to its current value this string (separated by a blank):
