Progress Reports from Puppy projects
I am writing this from Firefox in SimplePup.
A good distro is dependent on those in its community of users.
Some of the contributions are obvious as they directly impact the programming. Most of us are aware of Barry and GuestToo and MU but I would like to hear progress reports. Little known efforts etc.
At the end of this post are some of the contributions - just some . . . It is from my "sticky" Intro in the beginners section of the forum - so any addons/updates/corrections are welcome . . .
I would like to hear some updates from people (no humility now) because the help you offer always gives you much more . . .
I can tell you a little of the things I became involved in and how that helped me. This time last year I was using XP more than Linux. Puppy has been my penguin education. My original aim was to create Linux Tmxxine. That will be launched in 2008. What will it be like? It will be exactly like Puppy.
http://tmxxine.com/wiki/LinuxTmxxine
Because I had some experience with wikibooks and wikicities,
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Buddhist_Philosophy
I decided that reading the forum and transferring it to a wiki, would be my contribution. Eventually I started the wikinews and even did a few audio reports - experimenting with different formats and making use of the excellent "Audacity"
http://dotpups.de/pawcast/
I started the IRC channel and quickly realised that manning it was a full time job - but you could really learn . . .
Using Abiword I was able to use my experience and knowledge (and call on others contributions) to create the "Intro to Puppy Manual" in
http://tmxxine.com/puppy/man9.rtf
It has always been fun.
Please tell us about your contribution to Puppy. It will inspire others.
Or tell us how you use Puppy
Many thanks - woof woof
AlienX has created specialist Window themes for Puppy and the Remaster CD script
Babbs is creating a mirror of many of our files, learning to manage a server

Pizzasgood created a special edition "PizzaPup" that uses Firefox, Perl, Midi support and wifi and "EmptyCrust". Working on HackyRemaster v3 with a detailed guide on how to use to engineer your own Puppy includes tweaked PupBeGone (HackyPupBeGone) Working towards Pizzapup 1.0.8. Rewriting game engine which will be released first for Puppy. Web page on Puppy for future release with more details

What do you mean by XML windows manager?
I've finished the XDG menu implementation in Puppy. It's just a way of dynamically creating the wm menus freeing the individual packagers the burden of adding their application to each of the possible wm menus.
I haven't worked at all on implementing Xfce at all. It was just one of the WM supported by the XDG menu implementation as are iceWM, jwm, kde, etc.
I'm also working (quite slow recently) on improving the network connection wizard.
CUPS is a dormant project as it actually does not seem fit for puppy and I haven't had time to dig deeper into ghostscript to add more drivers.

Once I finish HackyRemaster v3 (hopefully this weekend) I'm going to write a detailed guide on how to use HackyRemaster to genetically engineer your own Puppy. HackyRemaster v3 will fix a couple bugs and introduce a tweaked PupBeGone (HackyPupBeGone) that will work with it. Eventually I plan to integrate PupGet (or a clone) into it, but not for v3.
As for Pizzapup 1.0.8, I'm not entirely sure. I get the first week of April off of school, so I'm thinking I'll do it then. That way I won't feel as rushed, since I can normally only get work done on the weekends, and have to go through the entire week waiting to get a little bit further. It's fine with small projects, but maddening with bigger ones.
After I get done with Pizzapup, I plan to take a break from Puppy development to work on some of my other projects. I need to add a Puppy page to my website, finish my cms, and maybe start re-writing that game engine (Puppy will be the first supported OS )

We all pay homage to those developers who spend a great deal of their own time and effort towards the betterment of Puppy, they deserve a big thank you.lobster wrote: A good distro is dependent on those in its community of users.
There is also a subset of contributers, who, occasionally post very important ideas, suggestions and comments to improve Puppy.
The Off-topic section of the forum, has many contributers, nothing at all to do with Puppy, but this section provides a safety valve for those who wish to have a "bit of a giggle", and provides the opportunity for discussions of a more serious nature.
Many Puppy users do not post to the forum, but spread the news, either by word of mouth or handing out CD's, of the uniqueness of Puppy, the silent majority.
Finally there have been valuable contributions from people, who, for various reasons no longer wish to be associated with Puppy.
To all the groups mentioned above, a thank you is also in order.

Puppian together with the admins maintain the puppylinux.org/user (main site for new users); he also led the documentation project at http://puppylinux.org/docs/
Jonathan Marsden added samba server and put up the bug tracker at ...
wait... perhaps a wiki page will be best for this, so everyone can add details and even try a timeline.

Yes, I (JaDy) built PupWin98 but have not (yet) released an XP version. Still working on PupWinXP but having trouble making it as easy as PupWin98 -- download, expand, run.Lobster wrote:JaDy has created a Puppy that boots straight from Windows 98 and has released an XP version.

Puppy Money Personal 0.2 is finished and released.
This is a bigger and different version to the first release which was really a test version, since then I have rewritten a lot of the program to include insurance fields, multiple accounts, a backup facility, slightly different look to the interface and improved the uninstall section.
Along the way I have learned a few more things to improve the workings.
I have tried to make it as simple and foolproof as possible and this has taken time for the simple fact that when I altered or added anything most times it resulted in another problem that I had to find a way to overcome.
Getting things to work the way I wanted them to was quite a struggle as I am only learning tcl & Tk so there are probably easier ways to do things that I have yet to learn but at least I have a foot in the door.
The most time consuming parts were researching and creating little test programs to prove things, after that putting it all together and debugging the new errors became easier.
I have started on Puppy Money Pro but I need to do a bit more research before I get into it in a big way.
With any luck this will not take anywhere as long to put together as the first effort.

Thanks raffy - have added some details but people could link to their specific wiki or web pages and add details (it is quite important to know who is doing what - so drop the modesty)raffy wrote: Edit: This is the new wiki page: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/ContributedProjects

Information about Grafpup can always be found at the grafpup.com website, on the news page. Nevertheless I'll provide a little insight into current development here.
For Grafpup 103 we're adding Alsa and Xorg finally
GTK2 has been updated to the current 2.8 series, with Cairo
I've got a working Apache/PHP/MySQL server package, compiled within Grafpup (still in testing since I just upgraded MySQL)
Very close to having a working SMTP mail server
Big push into multimedia (audio and video editing applications), the new usr_multimedia.sfs should make the distro comparable to others like DyneBolic
There's a big bunch of changes that aren't as apparent, too. Much of the work can feed right back into Puppy, for instance the Lamp server package runs on Grafpup 102 and 103, Puppy 108, and Puppy2 current.

On the page it said:Thanks raffy - have added some details
"Puppian ... added samba server and put up the bug tracker"
I can't remember when I have done that? You must be busy chasing the fish when you're editing the wiki Lob
