The EPIA M has the VIA Unichrome chipset AFAIK, but may have different versions, VIA CLE266, KM400/KN400, K8M/N800, PM/N800 and CN400 chipsets being common
I believe the XORG VIA driver in puppy should load OK, but there may be issues with hardware acceleration/DRI or OpenGL

I think also bios updates have been known to fix this, but need doing from windoze or MSDOS boot using a win98 boot disk, with the bios update downloaded to C:\ or floppy

There are a couple of threads, but for earlier puppies

tempestuous did a lot of work on this so may be best to solve it with you

To answer my own question:
Rename (uncomment) /root/.gconf/apps/metacity/general/%gconf.xml to /root/.gconf/apps/metacity/general/%gconf.xml, i.e. remove the leading % from the filename, and edit the line

Code: Select all

<entry name="num_workspaces" mtime="1282316500" type="int" value="2">
to read

Code: Select all

value="3"
Took some fumbling in the dark, peeking and poking around, to find out how... Anyhow, I'm a much happier puppeteer now that I have 3 virtual desktops......

Hi MHHP,

There´s a faster way to change the number of desktops in metacity, this command apply changes instantaneously. Type:
gconftool-2 --set --type int /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces 4
change the number according to your needs, I also found another good gconftool tricks:

Code: Select all

-Display some metacity settings:

gconftool-2 -R /apps/metacity

Code: Select all

- Disable animations and effects to reduce resources consumption:

gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/reduced_resources true
If someone need it, I could build a new GUI application to control this metacity settings.

I also played with lxpanel:

clarf,
Many thanks for your info :D!

It will make my metacity learning curve less steep. :)

One thing I haven't found out yet, though;
Right-clicking with mouse on the backdrop is sent by Rox to window manager (if option ticked, of course), but how do I get metacity to then call xfce (or any other panel's) menu?

Have found myself right-clicking on the desktop umpteen times, expecting a menu, but getting nothing (power of habit is strong :) ).

Cheers :)/

Copy files from server

#3808 Post by crsrds »

Hi,
I connect to a SCO server using a thin client with 214 and putty. Each user has a $Home directory on the server. This directory has the user files that get flushed everyday(sysadmin policy).
I need to write a script that will enable me to see all the current files in my $home directory, select one or two of them and copy them to my local machine. The files are not large, The server supports ssh.
The need is to place this scipt on the desktop so that users can click on it, see the files in their $Home directory and copy the needed files from the server to the local thin client.
This is very essential for me and any help is most welcome.
I can use pscp/psftp, but the syntax is long and many users cannot use these features. We need a click/select./copy application. Pl help.
Thanks,
crsrds

Network/Services bbug

#3809 Post by clarf »

Hi ttuuxxx,

I discovered a bug in 214XRC5, related to the initialization of Network Services (/etc/init.d scripts).

To resume, Network Services like Hiawatha can´t be loaded because they are executed before the network setup is complete.

The rc.services script already has a delay time but slow machines, slow network interfaces or HDD boots makes the delay not enough. The real solution is modify the rc.sysinit to remove the services execution and move it to the rc.local0 script, just after the network setup is executed.

I attach a new version for both scripts that solves the problem. Tested on different systems and PUPMODE.

Greetings,
clarf

Hello Forum,
Please ignore my previous post. I found a solution through filezilla.
Can someone kindly let me know the latest version of filezilla for top3?
Thanks.

Copy files

#3812 Post by crsrds »

Dear tuuxxx,
I downloaded the filezilla pet and installed it on top3. No, there were no missing libraries and it is working perfectly.
Thank you for doing this even when you were so tired.
Best regards,
crsrds.

Since it worked for crsrds, I added Filezilla to the mirror.

Here's a chm file/document reader, compiled with static wxgtk libs
http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/2.14X/S ... 7-i386.pet
the nice thing about it, if your using chm files is that you can export it via the printer as pdf and then you can open it with evince and copy and paste the text into abiword and from there edit away :)

also here's a nice text /code editor with static wxgtk libs http://www.smokey01.com/ttuuxxx/2.14X/S ... e-i386.pet
The only thing it doesn't like is xml files named .conf strange that.

For your frugal; to avoid being notified of the ancestry of all processes, add to your kernel line

Code: Select all

root=/dev/ram0
This was used for earlier puppy series, was deprecated from puppy3, I believe.

Hi MHHP, I didn´t find a solution to call Xfce panel menu from metacity. But found binding keys related info that could be useful:

http://people.gnome.org/~bmsmith/gconf- ... acity.html

I also found that several errors are shown in /tmp/xerrs.log after metacity starts:

Code: Select all

Window manager warning: "(null)" found in configuration database is not a valid value for mouse button modifier
Window manager warning: Could not parse font description "(null)" from GConf key /apps/metacity/general/titlebar_font
Window manager warning: 0 stored in GConf key /desktop/gnome/peripherals/mouse/cursor_size is out of range 1 to 128
Seems like a default configuration flie must be created with valid keys for metacity. I´ll test a solution tomorrow an let you know.

Greetings,
clard
