Gmailtray-0.9 tray icon with 'new Gmails' tooltip & sound.

#1 Post by tasmod »

Version 0.9

2 Small changes.

Left click on icon launches default browser straight into Gmail window.

Right click menu has option to do same.

Version 0.8

Quick update.

Added 'Play' button to Sound Choice combo window to preview and set the sound.

The first option in Sound Choice combo window is OFF, obviously this turns off the notification.

Version 0.7

Right click menu has a choice of sounds to play when mail count changes from previous.

If you delete some mails from server it will reset the count when it next checks mail.

Version 0.6

Just for fun I added a mail notification sound & sound library.

It will announce once when you have new mail as an update.

The sound file called is 'newmail.wav' and there is a small library of sound files in /usr/local/Gmailtray/sounds, the female voice is nice
If you click on them in turn to try out and then rename the one you want to use it will obviously call that.

TO DO later:
Add a menu choice for the sound file to use.
Sound On/Off facility.

Version 0.5

Tooltip mails subjects now is up to last 3 received in correct order.

In it's current state it will not startup on boot, there is a script file missing. I've added it below, just place in /usr/local/Gmailtray and click on it.

Version 0.4
Now has option to change check mail interval in 1 minute increments up to 30 minutes.

The tooltip now shows subject of last 3 mails in tooltip also.

----------------------------------

This is a tray icon which checks Gmail or Googlemail approx every 5 minutes for new mails. There is also a menu option to check immediately.

Mails which are 'read' do not show in count, only new mails.

Important: To run first time :-

Install the pet.
Gmailtray setup will start, enter your Gmail or Googlemail user name and password, select button as appropriate and click 'apply'

Restart Gmailtray from Main/Internet menu as per above.

That's it, tray will show a yellow envelope icon with a hover over tooltip "New Mails = 0" or a green open envelope with a "Mails = number" if you have mails waiting. Version 4 shows subject of last 3 mails.
There is a right click menu option to start the default email program to read them and an option to check for mails immediately.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Version 0.3 Major revision

Cleared two small bugs.

I'm very pleased with this. Lots of work and code gone into it.

Now all is in the binary except 3 small user generated files at runtime.

Password is encrypted in file.

New icons for tray:-
Yellow envelope means no mails.
Opened green envelope means mail waiting.

Small icon change in menu.
No echoeing in terminal.

Hiya

This sounds like another simple but great idea to have.

Unfortunately I do not use Gmail nor Googlemail - however I was wondering if it could be adapted to work with other free POP3 and SMTP email providers?

Version 0.2 released.

Supports Gmail as well as Googlemail.
Menu option to check for new mails immediately at any time.

-------------------------------

chrome307,

I am looking into this but there are so many options with imap, pop3 as well as https http etc etc and also mail provider addresses.

I need a new 'front end' to cope with the options for running it.

I did all the work on the setup and mailfetch routines with a nagging idea I had seen it all before. Yes I had !

I did the exact same script for pwidgets mail widget some time ago.

So I had rewritten it all when in fact I could have copied it across and just altered it.

I have been after some thing like this for a long time. However I really would prefer it if the password was encrypted please. Could you/anyone face it?

There are a couple of things being worked on for version 0.3, password protection is one of them.

Note that if run from a cli then the password is protected from echoing.

Greetings Tasmon,

Damn, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The prog loads just fine, the icon in the task bar shows that I have new mail, yet when I click "Launch Email Program", every box comes up empty. When I enter my "Personal Info" and click "OK" I get an error message that says "SMTP server not entered". That is true. I do not know what to enter there. Also, a dialog box pops up with this message, "New version of Slypheed found". Got me confused. It seems simple enough, "Menu, Internet, Gmailtray Email Tray Applet, right click "run Gmailtray setup" enter user name and password, click "apply". Right click on tray icon and click "Quit" Restart from main menu. Hover over tray icon shows "42" new mails. but when I right click "Launch email program" they come up empty. What am I doing wrong? I think it has something to do with the "SMTP server" message that I mentioned earlier. Maybe it is just too late in the day and I am too tired to understand. Will try again later, after I have gotten some sleep. Ta, ta. for now. Yep, I am tired, don't normally talk like that.

Sylpheed is an independent program from Gmailtray. I just launch it from the menu.

You need to setup your account details in Sylpheed.

Sorry, I don't know your settings.

Silly errors on my part in last couple of posts

I've tested Version 0.5 fully on a new install and it works OK.

It should display last 3 mail subjects in tooltip, not last three in file!

Thanks tasmod for your gmail applet 0.5, works great. I've been searching for something like this for some time. I use gmail notifier when using Firefox but then I prefer Opera portable.
Is there anyway of having it startup when booting up computer.

If it is running in tray when you close down, it should restart on next boot.

Be aware it has a 20 second wait time on boot so that net connection can be established.

If net is not up it will fail to start.

Thanks for that but it doesn't work for me. That may be because both Firefox and Opera portable are stored outside the pup save file. Anyway its no big effort to do a click start from the menu. Its a great little app-Irishrm.

It doesn't need a browser, it is completely standalone.

Ahh, just run it here on a new Puppy Lucid 220 install and it doesn't restart on reboot. I will look into that.
