This version has been updated and fixed, but is still v9

Summary:

Puppy Arcade is a retro video game emulation distro, supporting loads
of systems, with an all-in-one multi-emulator frontend and rom-loader.

Puppy Arcade 9 features lots of small improvements in the background,
particularly the custom Puppy Arcade apps, and the background setup.

Various networking and system scripts have been updated, adding fixes
found on the Puppy Forum, while keeping the changes that make 'TurboPup'
such an ideal, fast, base distro for creating Puppy Arcade.

Many apps have also been added or updated, and it has a nicer desktop
taskbar, with easier system setup, thanks to some updated and customised
JWM tray tools.

I don't expect a lot of new interest in this, but if you find any bugs or have any
suggestions, please post them at the Puppy Arcade homepage, or here.

Changelog for "PA9 fixed":

- fixed old bugs: includes all bugfixes from the previous release
- fixed pup_save setup: save files fully working again for frugal installs
- fixed mame-chooser: and saturn-chooser, set defaults work fine
- fixed quickstart: now auto-loads until save file is found
- fixed frontend-chooser: now works perfectly
- fixed adobe flash support for many browsers
- updated ROX and JWM, and many other apps
- updated rejoystickCC: added emulator controls to profile help panels
- updated rom-loader: more help, fixed SDLMAME and Gxmame integration
- updated bios-checker: added msx bios files
- updated default frontends: uses emulator GUIs - easier access to controls, etc
- updated browser installer: removed 'Chrome', not working in 4.2
- updated PCSX settings: use better joypad plugin
- updated many small apps
- updated networking tools and helpers
- updated help file in /usr/doc/arcade.html
- updated Control Panel, added apps
- added VGB emulator: to /usr/bin/vgb (no frontend yet)
- added system setup from the desktop tray (at the bottom)
- added fMSXfan emulation package
- added slackware txz package support (convert txz to pet)
- removed many extraneous programs
- Note: Auto-connect to internet may not work - use a network setup tool

Just a question, do you have to have a gamepad/joystick for all the emulators? Which ones can you run with just a keyboard? Thanks!

They ALL work with only a keyboard. Joypads are entirely optional.
Rom-Loader shows the keyboard controls for many emulators, in the 'Help' tab.

Also check /usr/share/doc/arcade.html --> this file has links to all emulator help files (Section 7).
You'll find the controls in the emulator help files, too.

I honestly would like to see you add VGB ( http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 823#445823 ) to the next version of Puppy Arcade.
Only reason is for the gameshark support for GBC Roms.
We need it on GBA too, but take what you can get type deal |3

Is this emulator from the same guy who produced MasterGear et al? They are good emulators.

I'll include it in the next one.. If you'd asked me 3 or 4 days ago, it would have already made it into v9.. Oh well..

MAN, this is great! A really lightweight distro that barely uses any resources while concentrating on one thing: Retro Gaming! Thanks and keep up the good work!

Can I suggest some improvements? I am an aging MSX fan so the support for that platform is of interest to me. I have done some (internet) research and it seems like the only (I might be wrong) advanced emulator being developed at a reasonable pace for Linux is "openMSX". If you could include that emulator by default and maybe the graphical front end "openMSX-Catapult" that would be great!

Also, besides including an MSX emulator by default, why not include most of the other optional packages as well? I think it would be better if the user would be presented to some screen during boot where he could choose NOT to include some packages if he wishes to, i.e. some of the emulators, CD/DVD burning tools and so on. A brief explanation of each package would be good too. I believe most people will be using this distro for gaming on their favorite platform(s) only so a lot of the packages, tools, and emulators can be stripped off. Personally, I would take out a lot! :)

PS. Most of Konami's titles for the MSX are soooo good, you should try them out. Take a look at the Gradius/Nemesis/Salamander shoot-em-up's and you shall see the light! :P

Thanks, I'll try!

OpenMSX is at least 2mb, possible 6mb, I can't remember, and I'm not familiar with openMSX-Catapult.. But I can certainly try and get some packages together...

But as they are so large (I think), I may not include them as default - the reason Puppy Arcade is so fast, is the low RAM requirements and the fact it is small enough to run in RAM on many PCs (anything with 256MB RAM and above)..
KingBongo wrote:Also, besides including an MSX emulator by default, why not include most of the other optional packages as well?
Again, to keep the ISO small enough so that users of older, slower PCs can still enjoy their games! :D (All bugfixes will be included by default of course!)

There are many different emulators for each system, everyone has their favourite, many of which don't run well in Puppy. I include only the emulators which are small, fast, reliable and nicely playable.
KingBongo wrote:I think it would be better if the user would be presented to some screen during boot where he could choose NOT to include some packages
That would be very troublesome - if the packages were not included in the ISO, the internet connection would need to be present during boot, and users would need fast interent connections to get the packages they want.

And if the packages were present, there would be no real benefit in simply hiding them from the user.
KingBongo wrote:I believe most people will be using this distro for gaming on their favorite platform(s) only so a lot of the packages, tools, and emulators can be stripped off. Personally, I would take out a lot! :)
Check out http://ppm.scottjarvis.com for only the packages, which can be installed to any Puppy.

Or use 'pfilesearch' to search for all the stuff you want removed (tick 'search current filesystem only', then copy the results into a text editor then save it. Then you can use that list in Woofy to remove the files in a customised, remastered version of Puppy Arcade.
KingBongo wrote:PS. Most of Konami's titles for the MSX are soooo good, you should try them out. Take a look at the Gradius/Nemesis/Salamander shoot-em-up's and you shall see the light! :P
I'll have a look! :D

Hope the info was helpful in some way.

Thank you very much! Really helpful. Now I can trim off some fat myself :)

I would like to have a version of Puppy Arcade working more or less like I described it. I believe many people use it on fairly fast computers (I do) and could care less if the memory footprint is somewhat larger, if it uses somewhat more CPU, or if the iso is much bigger. A hard drive install is always possible. They only want to trim down the operating system itself so it is not unnecessarily large and resource hogging. This is all about gaming, right? Therefore no compromises when it comes to the emulators and GUIs themselves (option-wise). Maybe two versions of Puppy Arcade? But that is just what I want :P I am not making this great distro so I should just shut up :)

By the way. I have a P4, 3.06GHz, 2Gb RAM. I intend installing Puppy Arcade as a Dual-Boot with Ubuntu. I think the computer can handle most anything that would be packed into Puppy Arcade.

PS. Regarding which emulators are good and work in Puppy Arcade, we will just have to trust the developer :) I assume knowledge comes with experience.

I forgot to say, you can also add roms to the remastered version, using Woofy, if you click the 'Edit filesystem' checkbox.
Then copy over your roms into the folder you like when it its time to edit the sfs manually.

I've tried to include only the GUIs which access the core libs and tools of Puppy Linux, example Pmusic, is under 50kb!

Also, you could check out the zdrv_cutter, which will shrink down your Puppy install, removing all unneeded drivers.
(Make sure you have everything you want to use plugged and working in when you run it!)
KingBongo wrote:This is all about gaming, right? Therefore no compromises when it comes to the emulators and GUIs themselves (option-wise). Maybe two versions of Puppy Arcade? But that is just what I want :P I am not making this great distro so I should just shut up :)
No need to shut up at all!! But I do like to release the larger packages separately, so users can add them if they wish.
For example, the zinc emulator.
KingBongo wrote:PS. Regarding which emulators are good and work in Puppy Arcade, we will just have to trust the developer :) I assume knowledge comes with experience.
Yep, lots of hours of testing, searching, downloading, compiling, failing, re-testing, and so on!! :D

Hi Scott, great work on Puppy Arcade - I'm really impressed. I've been looking to build a kind of "emulation system" that would boot very quickly and launch immediately into a frontend that allows emulator and ROM selection with a great deal of user-friendliness (so that anyone could turn on the system and play), and Puppy Arcade seems to be the answer.

A couple of questions:

1. Is it possible to use a joypad to select the emulator, i.e. on the Puppy Arcade desktop? My system would be an old laptop hooked up to a monitor and I'd like to avoid having to use a mouse or keyboard at any stage.

2. Are the frontends for each emulator customisable, or does that depend on the individual emulator?

Thanks very much, I'd say so too :D
Puppy has amazingly low system requirements, and Puppy Arcade is now the most complete emu distro around.
CNash wrote:1. Is it possible to use a joypad to select the emulator, i.e. on the Puppy Arcade desktop?
Yes. But firstly, always plug in your joypad before the desktop loads.

You can indeed use your joypad to browse and load your roms, using the multi-emulator fronted (called Rom-Loader)..

Check out the Rom-Loader splash-screen - click "Setup joypad navigation"

Then you map the keyboard controls Rom-Loader to your chosen joypad buttons, using a tool called Rejoystick Control Center (aka RejoystickCC).

Personally, I only use RejoystickCC to control Rom-Loader - I edit the emulator controls directly (using the emulators themselves), so I can browse, load and play my roms with only my joypad. :)

(The keyboard controls of all emulators can be found in the Rom-Loader help tabs, or the emulator help files - section 7 of the main help file - /usr/share/doc/arcade.html)
Rom-Loader Help File wrote:HOW TO ENABLE JOYPAD NAVIGATION FOR ROM BROWSER

Like all GTK frontends, the keyboard can be used to navigate Rom-Loader.
This means that using Rejoystick, joypads can also be used.

Keyboard Controls:

up, down, left, right directions
enter/space ok/execute
tab next item
shift+tab previous item
alt+s save emulator settings
alt+h load emulator help file
alt+q close the current GUI

Rom-Loader will automatically load its own rejoystick profile each time it is loaded.
So, to enable joypad navigation, you must map the keyboard controls above to your joypad.

To do this, you simply need to load the RejoystickCC tool, and edit the 'romloader.cfg' profile,
mapping the keyboard controls above, to your desired joypad buttons.

IMPORTANT

Rejoystick does not support key combinations, such as 'Alt+F4' or 'Shift+Tab'. So, to enable key
combinations like 'Shift+Tab'. So, for example, to close a GTK application, you should map the 'Alt' key
and 'F4' key to separate buttons, and press both at the same time!
Of course, you can add these controls to whichever buttons you find most comfortable.

After you have edited the Rom-Loader profile, using RejoystickCC, you need to make Rom-Loader start at bootup, by selecting the auto-load option on the Rom-Loader splash screen.

Rom-loader will start at bootup, and automatically load the romloader joypad profile that you edited, and then you will be able to browse your roms with your joypad at system boot :D

At least, I have it working, so I assume it will work for others!
CNash wrote:2. Are the frontends for each emulator customisable, or does that depend on the individual emulator?
You can edit the Rom-Loader frontends, by browsing to "/usr/local/rom-loader", right-click on any file and choose 'Open as Text'

What are you planning to edit? Maybe I can help, or include any changes/features in future versions.

The actual emulators have their own GUIs which cannot be edited, unless you wanna grab the source code, edit, and re-compile!!

Although you can re-configure how these emulators load up, by opening up the control panel and going to the gaming tab - from there you can edit all the config files of the emulators.

NOTE: Rom-Loader, RejoystickCC and ContolPanel can also be found from the QuickStart app.

Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on!
I'm thinking I need to work out an easier way to explain all that!!!

Thanks Scott! I'm sure I'll work things out as I actually get to use it - unfortunately Megaupload's giving a "file temporarily unavailable" error so I can't download it at the moment. I assume that's due to it being a new release and the sheer number of people downloading it has maxed your bandwidth, or something like that. :)

So, Rom-Loader handles loading roms (obviously, heh) - so the user wouldn't have to touch the emulators' internal menus at all once the ROM is loaded? Sounds great.

One last thing - does the version of Gens included support Sega CD and 32X games?

Yes Gens can handle Sega CD and 32X. As can Xe (an optional, additional download)...

Hmm.. I'll try to get another file mirror sorted out very soon -, I read on a Chinese site that they couldn't get the Puppy Arcade download too...

NEW, FIXED ISO AVAILABLE

It is highly recommended you download the new one, called "Puppy Arcade 9 fixed"

This one works really well, many bugfixes, and has all the latest improvements, too.

This one works so well, I'm giving a direct download (until my server crashes!!)

Get it here: Direct Download for "Puppy Arcade 9 fixed"

Hey scottman

I'm on a slow connection, and when the download times out (generally at 20-30%), there's no way to resume.

Use a download manager, so you can resume the download.

For example, if you already have puppy running, use wget to download the file with the -c option, this will continue any downloads....

so, in the terminal, type:

Code: Select all

wget -c -O /mnt/home/puppy-arcade-9-fixed.iso http://downloads.scottjarvis.com/grab.php?f=puppy-arcade-9-fixed.iso
Obviously, change /mnt/home to the dir you want to download it to.

Or if you're on windows, use this http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/screenshots.htm

I will upload it to another mirror soon as well.

Hope this helps.

I tried that a few times. When the connection closes, wget starts over completely. When I try downloading it in prozilla, part of the display says resume isn't supported.

The earlier "unfixed" V9 I grabbed from the megaupload and the fixes should do for now.

This is a great project, and one of my favorite specialized distros. Thanks, sc0ttman!
