(Game) Tuxracer / PPracer |
|
The penguin TUX races down the hill and tries to collect herrings.
http://projects.planetpenguin.de/racer/
SDL-version (will run on most puppys):
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/William/ppracer.pup (13 MB)
This version was already announced some weeks ago by Kirk.
New (each 8 MB):
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/ppracer-0.3.1.pup
Puppy 2.02 and OLDER:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/Tuxracer-0.61-for-Puppy2.02-and-older.pup
Puppy 2.10 and NEWER:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/Tuxracer-0.6.1-for-Puppy2.10-and-newer.pup
These run fullscreen with OpenGL-hardware-accelration, if you have DRI-drivers installed.
Info on DRI:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13114
To hear the music in these games, you must update the SDL-libraries:
http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=2482
Other games:
1.) search the forum for "game"
2.) http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/
3.) Try the Gamepuppy-Iso: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=7134

PlanetPenguin Racer is a more recent fork of Tux Racer, and I think it's worth having both. I will probably ask MU to remove ppracer-0.3.1 because kirk's ppracer-0.5alpha has slightly nicer graphics. It's here - http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/William/ppracer.pup
Both games require libstdc++-6.0.3 PupGet (258KB) plus LibSDL1.2-forDoom.pup (428 KB).
Some notes about PPRacer -
- it seems to be fussy about the X environment, and may fail to launch with the message - "Couldn't initialize video : Couldn't find matching GLX visual". Just change the colour bit depth in xorg.conf and this should be fixed. I had to change from 16 to 24, even though glxinfo reports direct rendering enabled at both settings.
- the graphics are slightly better, so it's more resource-intensive. If you have performance problems, you can decrease (or disable) some of the 3D effects in the configuration files, /root/.ppracer/config.nut and /root/.ppracer/options.
- the default is to display in an 800x600 window. Fullscreen can be achieved by modifying config.nut for "fullscreen = true" which seems to force the display size to 800x600
... but if your current X display is already 800x600, this will result in flicker. Your only option with an 800x600 display is to accept the default "fullscreen = false" and you will have to be happy with seeing a console title-bar at the top, and the jwm tray at the bottom.

I have just updated the TuxRacer dotpup to be compatible with Puppy 2.10 onwards (with Xorg7.0) -
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/Tuxracer-0.6.1-for-Puppy2.10-and-newer.pup
The only other dotpup required is LibSDL1.2-forDoom.pup, to hear the music and sound effects, and this is available from the same download location.
And of course, you must be running a DRI (3D) graphics driver. Use MU's 3D-Control-Center V2.00
