Hv3 Web Browser Subject description: a Dillo challenger |
|
G'day,
Hv3 is a quick light Web Browser that works on Tcl/Tk. It renders and displays webpages better than Dillo and is roughly the same speed, In other words very very fast!
I have not tested the CPU load or Ram usage at this time, but appears slightly more than dillo (0.5mbs). With limited Java support occasionally makes WebPage navigation a little awkward if there's drop-down menus. Also, it resets/deletes everything on shutdown so Bookmarks and customisations are not there next start-up (this is a negative!). It also uses the polipo - A small and fast caching web proxy.
For basic, fast (very fast!) Web Browsing without all the bells and whistles - it's not a bad alternative to Dillo.
For more Information:

and for a review http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/columns/h3v_web_browser_it_dillo_killer
I found a pet package on the Home page site but had troubles making it execute. So I packaged it for Puppy 3.01. It should work with later and earlier Puppy versions as long as Tcl/Tk is installed. I have added the Tcl/Tk dependency that works for me (grabbed from the amsn-0.97.2)
I have also added an internet menu entry.
Enjoy!

hmmm thats's the older version we used to use in series 3
have a look at this one
here are the sources, you need to patch 2 files and download 2 extra deps, the reason for the extra deps is so that java-script will work, yes Java-script in this version
ftp://ftp.icm.edu.pl/vol/rzm1/linux-mandriva/devel/cooker/SRPMS/contrib/release/tkhtml3-3.0-0.20081201.6mdv2010.0.src.rpm

Ps there are special building instructions in the sources

G'day,
I had a look at the source code but, being a non-tech, is currently is beyond my understanding of compiling, which I have only done basic stuff.
Thanks anyway for giving us that link - when I've got a spare week to sit down and work it out I'll package a .pet for it. For now I will use, and be happy, that this version works as a basic, better than dillo, web browser (albeit one that's without java).
Cheers

Hi Martin
I had another look at your package and it looks like it was a static build, hmmmm Just wondering if you compiled it or repackaged it? The reason is that you stated that it was a bit too complex to compile the sources I posted but some how your package also has java-script without the extra files, and one large bin that would indicated a static-build or they added java script to the sources.
Anyways I made a settings addon pet below, basically it enables java script, the better icons and remembers the bookmarks. a real bonus:)

Just tried with wary090 and puppy511.
Both work ok including downloading (very fast).
Only complaint I have is the crappy font, found how to change font size but it stills just looks dotty! Is there any easy way to change the default fontset?
regards

G'day,
Sorry I haven't replied sooner. Thanks for giving this add-on ttuuxxx (your the real-deal Puppy genius); and...
Yes! I did repackage it but with a desktop entry and an execute command. I don't think I said that I compiled it, just packaged it. I am a simple soul who finds shortcuts to many things Puppy. But those short-cuts tend to lead to mushrooms at times
Cheers
