Hi -

I'm a newbie and have really appreciated the Puppy Community and all the great work on a distro that helped me get an old Dell lappie working for my grade-schooler's homework.

Problem is, the setup information I enter into SNS appears to get lost and then the computer can't connect to the internet.

This is an intermittent problem. It can work fine for 6 or so boot-ups, but then it will run into this glitch. I have to run SNS again, copy-paste the key again, then save. Everything works fine until SNS forgets the key again.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000, running a LinkSys PCMCIA card. When connected I get pretty good reception and OK speed.

I've selected SNS as the default network setup tool.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. My wife isn't going to be keen on running the setup and entering the key, so a solution will keep me from intervening on this machine too frequently.

There are so many puppies, so i would be useful if you tell us which one you use and how it is installed. (live with safe file, frugal, full?)
Also the mach specs specially ram is useful to know.

I'm using Puppy 5.10 and running from Live CD.

I can see the sns_connections_available file, and there is an entry for my network, the encryption type and the key.

When I booted up the machine tonight I had lost the connection again, so I needed to enter the key again into SNS. Finding the above entry was * after * I had run SNS again. I probably messed up the test. Sorry about that!

Well, rebooted a couple times to test the entry in the sns_connections_available file, hoping to come up once with the wireless connection dropped.

Sure enough, three reboots and then no wireless.

Sns_connections_available shows network name, the key and encryption type, but no wireless connection.

Any thoughts?

I remember vaguely that 5.10 had this problem.
Not sure if it was resolved in 5.10 or in 5.11.
Best try 5.11 as the attention of the developer has faded away from 5.10.

Your suggestion was a good one. I created a Live CD from the 5.11 version available and ran it on the laptop last night.

Rebooting a dozen or more times never once came up where the wireless wasn't found and connected.
