Fractal package for Lupu Puppy 5 (xaos)

#1 Post by sickgut »

http://www.thepussycatforest.info/linux/xaos.tar.gz

Download the above package and click on it and it should unzip wherever you tell it to. Just click on each of the packages in turn and you will have Xaos and all the libs it needs to run installed.

After you have done this then using your rox file manager surf on over to /usr/bin and find the file xaos , drag this to your desktop and you now have a desktop icon for the Xaos program.

You can make your own icon pic for it and save as a jpg or png in mpaint. Right click on the icon and select file xoas and then select icon and point it to your cool new icon pic.

Sorry i havent learned to do pet files yet maybe my next release will be a pet

Adventure in Xaos

#2 Post by the last saviour »

I've just tested you Xaos. The UI is very good and clean cut. The input method is excellent after I found out how to use it. ;-) It's my first experience. Do you create this input technic yourself and does it have any specific name?

Some little bugs are;
1. Scroll bar in the load window can not be clicked.
2. Palette step forward and backward doesn't work.

Some big bugs are;
1. Render animation doesn't work.
2. Sometimes, after deep zooming, the picture became distorted, not good antialiasing.
3. After some period of using Xaos, I found some applications don't work. I had to reinstalled some pet. Perhaps Xaos consumed some area on RAM which was used by Puppy. So some applications lost. My RAM is DDR1 745 meg. And I run Puppy from flash drive.

I also use Xaos 3.5 with Wine in Bruno, but don't experience big bugs. Maybe it's some differences between version 3.4 and 3.5.
I had upload my fractal works with Xaos3.4 for your consideration too.

Thank a lot for your version of Puppy Xaos.

hi

other that putting together the xaos package with a few dependencies into one archive i didnt do anything to modify it to work on puppy.

if you select a higher number of iterations then the image will not become as distorted as quick when zooming.

i love the tutorial demo that explains alot about fractals

have fun

I love your fractals. My favourite is "PheonixJ1.png". In fact I am going to use it as a wallpaper.

Hi abushcrafter;
Since you could quickly appreciate my fractal artwork, it automatically means that UR a real art connoisseur. And I will not be surprised to know that you always got A or A+ for your Art Appreciation in high school. Anyway don't inform me that I'm wrong.

HI sickgut;
Not only the tutorial section of Xaos is very good. I find Autopilot, Fast Julia mode an outstanding features too.
So probably your version of 3.4 is for Linux and my version 3.5 is for window.
And I've just found a serious problem that they are not only different in UI. But some files which were created from 3.4(Linux) rendered differently when opened with 3.5(Wine) or vice versa. Due to difference between graphic driver in Wine and Lupu? This problem really made me nervous of losing files for many days.
Now I'm working on user's formular in Xaos, and will upload them next month.

I think Xaos 3.4 in Lupu in about 10% faster than Xaos 3.5 in Wine.
Will you develop Xaos 3.5 Pet in the near future?
My people are somebody who will move to crowded city because I have promised them the refuge in the big UFO station.
Now I'd found at least 5 aliens who live in Thailand. They are from Triangular constellation.

the last saviour,

If you want to try a .pet of xaos-3.5, compiled in p412, it's available here. It doesn't have the right .desktop file, to appear in the menu with lupu, but seems to work OK if you drag /usr/share/applications/xaos.desktop onto the Desktop.

If it works OK for you, it's trivial to modify the .dektop file to get it in the menu.

Hi Ross;
Your desktop is the most colorful in your gallery.

Hi Muggins;
Thank for your recommendation.
I had already installed your Xaos 3.5 on P.A.W. (base on Puppy 4.12), But it closed immediately when I load the file.

Other Fractal freewares which I find interesting and would like to have as PET for either Lupu or NOP Quirky are;
ChaosPro
Fractal Explorer
Sterlingware
Tierazon

How long does it take to make one PET, e.g. Xaos?
I had already upload my recent Xaos work in Wonderful Xaos. Enjoy

fraqtive

xaos is great, i have used that over the years on different platforms. Here is another fractal generator/viewer, but based on qt.

If you have xorg-high and the basic qt libs installed on your system already, this one isn't too bad. libqt4-opengl was the only additional dep needed.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/fraqtive
or
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/fraqtive

I just tried the debian version of the above on dpup on a low end system. Its performance was fine.

Cool, I would like to put it in Puppy Package Manager--are there any killer bugs? Thanks.

I will also try the ones upnorth mentions.

the last saviour,

when my xaos .pet crashes, if you run it from commandline, with xaos, are there any error messages?

Hi Upnorth,

completely perplexed what's going on with this "illegal instruction". There's another thread where a program I compiled, using quirky-1.3, is giving the same error for someone using...quirky-1.3! And, to further complicate things, the attached image was generated using my xaos .pet on lupu-5.1.1.

It might just be the machine i ran it on. it's a 466mhz pre-coppermine, so more akin to pII than pIII. But that idea depends on if it was compiled on something newer.
Just a guess. The distro didn't make any difference, so thats why i think its my harware. This ./configure switch might change the compatiblility: --enable-portable-binary.

I think there's no error message.
I will try it again with other Puppy.

I've just found a new Xaos addon
http://www.stone.com/Videator/VJ.html
It will probably answer what is 'VJ mode' in UI.
But it's only for MAC Xaos.
Should I buy a MAC computer to use this addon?
:cry: :cry: :cry:

There should be some angel who make a pet of this VJ.
:P :P :P

Hello Upnorth,

I've recompiled, & re-uploaded, Xaos-3.5, with your recommended portable binary configure switch. Could you try it & see if it still crashes?
