LXDE Light for Lupu

#1 Post by playdayz »

LXDE Light for Lupu. I took a lot out--all I wanted was a different window manager than jwm and a panel, so it is openbox with the lxpanel. The reason is that we know 5 or so bugs in jwm mostly having to do with graphics and full screen. I was surprised to find that Icewm has its own problems with full screen. I am hoping that openbox is receiving current maintenance and development since it is the basis of lxde. Aragon created the menus that imitate the regular jwm menus--so perhaps this could be a direct replacement for jwm--the menu items are alphabetized differently at the moment. Things can be added to the panel--right-click. I only included clearlooks. I even took out pcmanfm so it won't manage the dekstop--that is still rox--I guess I should make a heavy version too.

Install the pet and then Menu -> Shutdown -> Exit to prompt and enter 'xwin lxsession' You can also start, and avoid lxsession by entering 'xwin openbox --config-file /openbox/lxde-rc.xml'

To go back, Logout and enter 'xwin jwm' or 'xwin icewm' or 'xwin startxfce4' etc ;-)

Thanks for making this Playdayz! :D While the full LXDE desktop works just great from Ubuntu ( you just need to alter the Openbox session file to startup LXpanel to work around LXsession itself ), I really like what you've made here, however, as there are MANY using 5.1.0/5.1.1 in a save-file setup who'd rather not have the 55meg over-all setup that the full LXDE desktop brings with it, say with PCmanFM, tonnes of themes, Xarchiver, gpicview, leafpad, and many more, since these just replicate many other fine programmes which already do a far better job. :)

I have 5.10 in a HDD install so I prefer the full install. I have 5.1.1 in a limited save-file - so your package here fits the bill "purfectly".

Thank you Playdayz for your hard work and dedication to this fantabulous Puppy Project!

Cheers/Amicalement!

Great stuff!!
I was trying this out and playing around with lxde. But I have one question:
how to make puppy (after lxde installation) to show the drives on the desktop.I like this light version, but I was thinking about changing also rox. after installing the other lxde stuff, I've got a new desktop and I am unable to bring my drives back:(
Any idea how to do this?
:)

Indeed, great stuff, I tested it in Puppy Squeeze (Dpup) and what I hadn't expected happened: it works flawlessly..

I have the drive icons on the desktop, so I suppose some of the other lxde stuff you installed borked your lxde puppy. Wish I could be of more help...maybe just start all over? ( not so difficult with Puppy  )

My impression is lxde-light is as light on resources as jwm. Can someone with a more scientific mind confirm this?

What I think is : that lxde is searching for information in etc/fstab.
But this works somehow different than in other linux distributions, and lxde can't handle the pmountauto script.
But I still don't know how to fix it:(

Well it might not be noticeably slower, but when I checked it used a lot more RAM.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

You are right disciple.

This is the difference I get, Dpup running with no apps open, except system info:

JWM : 73 MB
LXDE-light: 96 MB

Thanks,
Bert

here's what 2.14X is like at startup with htop and rxvt to take a screenshot.
first one is JWM and the second higher one is MetaCity and xfce-Panel 9MB larger.

Hmmm. Xorg uses 30MB by itself in my Puppy - how do you get such low ram usage? Is it with Xvesa or something? Is rox running (to provide a pinboard)?

I can't help being suspicious about the small difference between the two as well. Do you have equivalent tray apps in the two?

I'm using Xorg, but 2.14X uses an older Xorg from 2.14 series, Its smaller and takes less resources. Yes Rox is running for the Pinboard and File Manager but 2.14X also comes with Thunar if need be, bu not default. All the regular auto-startup apps are enabled, like absvolume,FreememApplet,Gatotray (system resource monitor like Xload but has extra features),network_tray(new blinky app), Powerapplet_tray(Battery Monitor), and even one extra Parcelite clipboard manager.

disciple 2.14X just takes less resources and comes with more apps than series 4 or 5 and that's why I've been working on it for almost 2yrs now:) Puppy has nothing to compare it to. Its a full featured Latest Firefox,Flash,Abiword version of puppy that has been 70% updated.
But if your still suspicious, download it, burn it, open a terminal at boot and type htop.

well the JWM uses the regular apps like blinky, tcl-volume, xload and freememory applet, really what was used in puppy 4 series plus parcellite, and metacity/xfce-panel uses the newer version from Wary --> FreememApplet ,network_tray, Powerapplet_tray, absvolume, Parcelite and Gatotray(xload++)
both startups have identical functions, JWM is more retro apps with all the same functions. Metacity is bleeding edge.

with my WM switcher in the shutdown menu, It uses 2 /root/.xinitrc located in 2 folders with different apps, Plus I have a metacity delayed run that starts up a /root/Startup-Metacity-apps folder where I keep the startup taskbar metacity apps.

So how come you don't use the xfce panel apps? Are those apps lighter than the xfce apps, or do the xfce apps require extra dependencies, or is there some other reason?

Hi disciple I'm using the other apps because they didn't have the same ones or the layout was too long (24x72) or they took more resources plus they weren't what I was used too. I like the default puppy monitors, I don't like the newer freememory applet although, The numbers for memory were nicer. But the icon theme I put together for it look nicer than the default one :)

Shutdown button in LXDE

#16 Post by jogreer »

Hi. I've been using LXDE Light for a while now and it is amazing. I have two issues though:

firstly how do I create shortcuts with Win+keys without adding icons to the desktop and linking to keyboard shortcuts?

secondly how do I fix the shutdown button so it doesn't reboot the computer but actually shuts the computer off?

Thanks :)

You can enable the win keys by setting you keyboard model to "pc104". You can do this by using this: Menu>Setup>Mouse/Keyboard Wizard>Advanced...>OK>Keyboard Model

You can enable the win keys by setting you keyboard model to "pc104". You can do this by using this: Menu>Setup>Mouse/Keyboard Wizard>Advanced...>OK>Keyboard Model
BTW the win key is then set as Hyper modifier key , so not Meta modifier key or Super modifier key.
