Request - text file viewers / readers for Puppy 4

#1 Post by Colonel Panic »

Hi. I used to use EtextReader in Puppy 2, but it doesn't work in Puppy 4 - the wrong version of gtk or something. Has anyone made a package for Puppy 4, or is there a similar one already packaged and available?

A quick update; I've found that less, the Linux command line text file reader, is installed in Puppy by default. It's an acceptable solution for the time being even if it hasn't got the features of Etextviewer (file and directory selection / memory and font and colour options, for example).

Maybe it's possible to write some scripts using it too, to point it at a directory
by default.

Thanks to everyone who's read my initial post anyway,

Cheers,

CP .

Is the etextreader source available anywhere? I can only find a really old version.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Ah. I think that is the last version, and I was confusing it with a Windows program with the same name.
I'll have a look at it.

Sources are at http://freshmeat.net/projects/etextreader/ but it uses wxgtk, probably a static build would be best. Not using 4 series right now maybe someone else could compile it.

I tried last night - it won't build (errors) on 4.x against my wxgtk.
The old package appears to be a static build that depends on gtk1.2, so I imagine it will run if you install the gtk12 and glib12 packages from the Puppy 2.x repository.

Thanks to you both for your interest in this but I can't be sure anyone else will want it, so if it's a lot of trouble to get it working you needn't bother on my account. It would be nice to have a fully featured text file reader for Puppy 4 but I don't think it's essential.

Cheers,

Did you try installing these two pets though?

I think they're all you need to run that package.

Well, I'm certainly always on the lookout for a good text/ASCII file reader. :) (And a simple/quick HTML reader - I'm currently using PuppyBrowser for that, but if I do upgrade Seamonkey 1 to SM2, it'll reportedly stop PuppyBrowser from working, so...)

I like 'gmas', which is a gtk-1.2-based version of 'more'. You can get an older package or sources and src2pkg build script here:
