Having seen the nice comment I wanted to try.
I have created the DVD from the ISO image
I can boot.
With RP-PPPOE I created a connection.
When I start the connection it times out and I don't see Lan, Lan TX and Lan RX activity on the ADSL Modem.
I created and configured the eth0 device to which the ADSL Modem is connected first and can ping to the eth0 as well as to the DSL modem on ethernet. At this moment I see some activity of the light ot the Alcatel Speed Touch Home modem.
When trying to configure the eth0 I can't do it with DHCP. I have to put a fixed IP adress.
My machine is an IBM Thinkpad R40 and it works well with XP-Pro
Is the configuration data written to the Thinkpad somewhere, as I have the impression that after a reboot this info isn't lost.
ADSL connection times out in Puppy
you don't need to configure eth0 to use it with your dsl modem ... older versions of RP suggest bringing the eth0 card down before running RP ... i don't know if it's necessary, but i put this in rc.local:
ifconfig eth0 down
if you try to use dhcp to connect to your ethernet card, it should not work, and it should time out
my RP connection settings are:
Ethernet Interface: eth0
DNS Setup: from server
Primary DNS: (blank)
Secondary DNS: (blank)
Use Synchronous DNS: enabled
Firewalling: none
you may need to experiment with the Use Synchronous DNS setting ... to be enabled, it requires a kernel module that Puppy did not have ... i added the module to my Puppy, i don't know whether the latest version of Puppy has that module or not
if you are trying to use your ethernet card to connect to your dsl modem and for a LAN at the same time, you may have problems ... i'm not actually sure whether you can do that or not, at least without a router

Thank you GuestToo
Where is this rc.local and what does it do.
In a console I typed the command ifconfig eth0 down, but to no avail
Tab Basic:
Username: xxxxxx
Network: xxxxxx
Password: xxxxx
Tab NIC and DNS:
Ethernet Interface: eth0
DNS Setup: from server
Primary DNS: grayed-out
Secondary DNS: grayed-out
Tan options:
Allow use by non-root user: no
(but I tried yes to no avail)
Use synchronous PPP: yes (whatever that means)
Firewalling: standalone
Tab advanced:
Service-name: blank
AC-Name: blank.
Seem pretty the same as youre settings, as far as I understand
I have two machines (a desktop and a laptop) connected but through a firewire connection. This works well in Windows, but in none of the distro's I looked at there seems to be no support for firewire.
Being new to to Linux you lost me a bit.GuestToo wrote:you don't need to configure eth0 to use it with your dsl modem ... older versions of RP suggest bringing the eth0 card down before running RP ... i don't know if it's necessary, but i put this in rc.local:

No I am not using the eth0 connection for local lan.

your settings look good to me, but:
i think "Use synchronous PPP:" must be set to "no", unless you have the synchronous pppoe module
see: http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=5422
i think some hardware will only work if "Use synchronous PPP" is enabled (yes)
i'm not sure if the Roaring Penguin firewall (in /etc/ppp) works or not ... the Puppy firewall should work
you can connect from the command line, to see if there are any error messages, by typing something like:
pppoe-wrapper start default
and
pppoe-wrapper stop default
assuming that you named your connection "default" when you configured it ... change the name to whatever you used when you created it
