Sub_title: How can I automate a network connection triggered by USB event

I've Googled this without much luck. I have an HTC Android phone that i use to connect to the internet from my thinkpad running Lucid 5.11. Works great but would be awesome to write a script so that whenever i plug my phone into the laptop the network configuration is automatic. I figure something like hotplug (wwhich dosn't seem to be present in LP 5.11 but hotplug2 is) piped to dhcpcd would do the trick. I guess what I need to know is how to trigger a script from a USB event. BTW the 'Save Configuration for next boot' option in the network wizard has never worked for me. If there's a GUI way to do it even better...........
