Compiling 2.4.29 kernel: What patches for Puppy 1.0.8r1?

#1 Post by toddyjoe »

I am a newbie to Linux and compiling so I hope I am not off on the wrong track. I wanted to add the Low-Latency patch (and ultimately JACK) to my Puppy Linux 1.0.8r1, which is frugally booted from my hard-drive using GRUB and files from the Live CD. I have usr_devx.sfs along with the following source and patch files:

linux-2.4.29.tar.gz
linux-2.4.29-ntfs-2.1.6b.patch.gz
squashfs2.1-patch-K2.4.gz
2.4.29-low-latency.patch.gz (Andrew Morton's patch, not a GZip file)

I additionally downloaded the "config-2july05-2.4.29-pup1.0.4.gz", but I am not sure if I should be using the "config-2.4.29-19FEB06-PUP108" already on Puppy instead. I also grabbed the "modules-2.4.29-complete.tar.gz" just in case.

After a few tries, I was able to use the above source and patches and "config-2july05-2.4.29-pup1.0.4.gz" to compile a new 2.4.29 kernel with my Puppy. For the most part, the new kernel works with low latency enabled although I forget to add the ALSA modules (ALSA does not work now because of missing drivers). Aside from putting the ALSA driver, library and utilities modules back on Puppy, I have three questions:

(1) Did I need to patch the kernel with a unionfs patch to be a low-latency version of the Puppy 1.0.8r1 version?

(2) Should I have used "config-2july05-2.4.29-pup1.0.4.gz" or "config-2.4.29-19FEB06-PUP108" for the .config?

(3) Anything else I may have forgotten to think of, aside from putting ALSA back in (for instance, will I have to tinker with "modules-2.4.29-complete.tar.gz")?

Thanks for any comments or advice. Feel free to direct me to a specific HOW-TO or Wiki link if I am missing something answered once before.
