network hp printer connection problem [SOLVED]

#1 Post by soto313 »

Hello
I'm running on my old pc the live puppy 4.3.1 and trying to make it work with a hp officejet 6500 printer. The printer is connected to this and others pcs through a wireless LAN which shares internet to pcs. Though the other pcs using Ubuntu or Windows can communicate with the printer , the one with puppy cannot. I tried both "hpliplite" and "hpijs" on CUPS but nothing , test page hasn't printed. I'd appreciate any help.

I would upgrade your CUPS to 1.3.11 using the procedure here. This version is much better at detecting networked printers. Then install the attached hpijs-dynppd driver package.

Do you have /usr/lib/cups/backend/smb?
It should be a link to /opt/samba/bin/smbspool

Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

This is stand-alone networked printer, not one connected to a PC. So the smb backend does not apply.

So how do you connect to it? IPP?

For HP units, it's usually AppSocket/JetDirect

Code: Select all

socket://aaa.bbb.cc.dd:9100

Thanks a lot for your help.
I followed rcrsn51's described procedure and updated CUPS , so pc found printer succesfully on "192.168.1.2" but then when I sent a test page I 've got this error :

HP_OfficeJet_6500_E709n_192.168.1.2 "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
Though didn't have enough time to search more the reason , I post this answer and come back soon with more details

Did you remember to install the foomatic-filters-4.0.4-i486.pet as stated in the upgrade instructions?

Yes exactly as described in step 2 , but I wonder as I run live cd if the tmp file changed.

Because you already installed some other hplip/hpijs packages, you may have some conflicts going on. You may need a fresh install to resolve this.

I did a simulated install of your printer in Puppy 4.3.1 with the CUPS upgrade and it looked OK.

Yes ok that worked. :) I removed foomatic and hplip/hpijs packages and re-installed foomatic and hpijs again and then everything worked fine.
Thank you for all the useful instructions
