I have had enough of wary and lupu for awhile. I have your 432****001.iso and would like to try your upgrade but being on dialup it’s really tough to get a working ISO :(
Any chance of getting a 001 > 002 delta?
Maybe I could make a Xdelta but it won't be for a day or two, Kind of busy this time of year now :)

I installed the devx and compiled and made a couple of pets, if you
want them (htop 09 and links 2.3pre1)I'll upload them later.
Going to try out 432 some more now.
grub4dos is new for 4 series, Barry didn't have a pet for 4 series so I used 5 series pet, I haven't looked at it yet or tested it, But if you have a working pet please submit and fixes that are tested and works, Just make sure all .bin and .so files are stripped.
strip -R .note -R .comment filename.so
as for new file changes or additions, I would rather work on getting it stable first. Updates and fixes are what are needed first :) and yes htop, lxtask, galculator, couple small games and some small music player will probably be the only new software additions.

One thing I like is that for once flash actually downloads and installs properly from adobe, usually we have to include it or offer a pet.
I think its because of flashblock being installed and setup and the extra parts.

It's still quite big at 37M.

Thanks for the delta. A 37Mb file should only take about 2.5 > 3 hours coming from your site. I have been having a real bad time with large downloads from ibiblio.org and the mirrors. I get about 25Mb into a 130 Mb file and the download stops saying it’s complete :(
Thanks Again:

Some noob questions.

#108 Post by NinerSevenTango »

@ttuuxxx,

I'll download and test today. It's the least I can do to in return for all the work you put in for the rest of us. I want to thank you for all the hard work you put into all these packages. Please don't give up on helping with the 'other' version. We all need your input, even if it seems at first to be a thankless task. I am aware of how much time it takes to do these things and I want you to know that I value these contributions, knowing full well the cost.

I have some noob questions before I install this version;

Is there a write-up somewhere that explains the use of the new grub4dos completely? And what actions the installer takes? (I do full installs. I always have to go back and fix grub because the default actions never fit my systems, which all consist of one or more windows partitions and several linux installs. And grub is always already installed. I'd be happy if I could just paste the proper command line into my existing menu.lst.) I'll test with pfix=ram until I see your response to this.

Does this release use PPM? How can I find or tell which applications are compatible?

I have a neighbor lady who is without internet access, I gave her a computer, she uses it to play games on. I'd like to install puppy with a bunch of games on it for her. Is there a way for me to burn the apps on a dvd and install them off that?

Thanks again for all the work you contribute to our favorite distro. Sorry for the noobiness of my questions. I only have limited time available to try to keep up, and I get in trouble with pets scattered all over the forum sometimes.

Merry Christmas to you. Maybe we will call you Santa Claus.

The Good, The Bad and The Odd
Odd: I was very surprised that my ttySLO modem was found on the first boot from the live CD. This modem usually requires a second boot to be picked up on. At least that was the way rerwin configured it for some winmodems. It did take a second boot after I did a full hd install for the modem to be found. Either way it works :)
Good: My ps2 mouse is found and working upon bootup without having to unplug it and plug it in again. Can't say the same for quirk, wary and lupu.
Bad: Grub in the System Menu is a no go. "Grub Bootloader Config" responds with "I can't find grub on the system"

The Universal installer stops after a full HD install. The windows that pops up and says press OK to continue to install grub does nothing.
Installing Grub4dos from the System menu is not a very good option in all cases. Leave my MBR ALONE!!!
Old Grub really needs to be working so grub can be installed to the root "superblock" of a linux partition not just destroy a windows MBR like grub4dos whats to do.

Just for a note: Wingrub/grub4dos is often seen as a rootkit by many high end utilities in windows.

Hi guys maybe you missed a couple post it looks like grub4dos needs packaging, I'll work on it in a couple of hours and post a package. Barry added grub4dos to the woof system for all puppies but he didn't make a package for 4 series, So I used 5 series grub4dos but it looks like its not compatible for 4 series.

I've been running this steadily on my main box since you released it. Frugal install.
Haven't tried every app, but haven't really noticed any real problems besides what you noted.Looks pretty darn solid.

Doing a full install on another old test box at the moment....got to have a working Grub. :) The "real" legacy Grub......

Did a test full install on an old test box that had 2 XP installs.

Gparted worked fine to delete 1 NTFS partition and create 1 Ext3 and a swap partition.

The installer copied the necessary files but exited abruptly at the point it should have displayed the new grub text.

Grub config.......no go ....."can't find Grub on the system".

Grub4dos worked and boots xp and 432 but is no substitute for legacy Grub, tested both and still prefer Grub.

Test Report

#114 Post by NinerSevenTango »

pfix=ram

Booted OK on Toshiba S300 EZ1511 laptop.

Found atheros wireless OK.

Sound was muted, fixed with alsamixer which showed speaker at zero.

Seamonkey is nice, works good, got flash, youtube works.

Unable to find driver for the Intel 4500 M graphics. Did a bunch of searching and found a pet, installed it, and was finally able to get native resolution. Here's the pet:

http://puppyisos.org/isos/2009-01-to-06 ... 5.1-02.pet

glxgears: command not found

glxgears: sorry, no matching package name

Puppy package manager crashed while typing this message. Switching back and forth, when I clicked "OK" on the not found dialog box, it quit the application.

I will make a save file on a thumb drive for future testing. Not gonna try a full install until I can find out what string the OS wants in my original menu.lst. Like I said in my earlier post I'm done fixing MBR, hunting down my saved menu.lst and fixing it all by hand anyway. There's enough time between attempts that I forget half the stuff and have to read up on it all over again each time (guess I'm getting old?). I'd rather just put what it needs in there in the first place from now on.

Tried gnumeric on a few largish spreadsheets, no problems.

What else shall I test?

Update: I went ahead and installed to a thumb drive, all settings retained. Nice.

Update 2 : Can't get right-side scrolling to work on my alps touchpad, even after copying the relevant settings into xorg.conf from my hard-won quirky installation. Damn irritating. Double checking .....

Update 3: OK, spent a few hours fiddling with xorg.conf. Nothing I can do will get the synaptics section to be read. Can't turn tapping off, can't turn edge scrolling on. All the instructions I have must be for a newer or older xorg or synaptics version. Following my own instructions at http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=61624 gets me nothing.

cat /dev/psaux shows activity when the mouse is moved.

I'm totally stuck. I've launched half a dozen apps accidentally so far. Damned tapping.

Back to Quirky until I can get a clue on this.

What a mess of a menu.lst. I would hate to see what grub4dos would create if you had two windows version (XP,W2K)on the same HD and lets say 3 other distro's beside and Puppy of course :)

Not trying to hose up your holidays here but abiword is very erratic.
In the middle of typing into a document the cursor will suddenly jump to another part of the document. This is not just a 432 problem, it also happens in other recent Pups. Also copy and paste out of abiword sometimes create small blank windows in the desktop or the app you are pasting into.
Otherwise 432-002 is as solid as rock hound.

here's a grub4dos that I compiled, I used the latest puppy release as a template and replaced the bins, strange it had a bin called wee.mbr and I couldn't find just that one in my compiled version. anyways Please test.
Thanks

I don't think it has anything to do with abiword. Happens all the time with Lucid, also. I think it might have to do with the writing point suddnely jumping to where the pointer is.
