PostPosted: Wed 22 Dec 2010, 15:23    Post subject:  Linking directories to the desktop with Rox
Subject description: How do you place a directory on the desktop?

I can drag a directory from Rox-filer to the desktop in macpup but when I click on the directory icon, a primitive file manager displays, not Rox-Filer.

How do I link the folder to cause it to be opened by Rox-filer when clicked?

Thanks much,

Tony

How much primitive? I'm intrigued by this...
First you should look on the 'edit' if everything its OK and looks fine.

You can 'customize the menu' for put a rox icon on it, but it sound kind of redundant...right?. Give right click to the folder and...you know the rest.. (the rox executable is in /usr/local/apps/ROX-Filer/AppRun directory).

I have no Idea of how Enlightment works (the desktop manager on Macpup, if my memory is still good Razz), but I give you an alternative that should work, doesn't matter the manager. Maybe its too much stuff for just open a folder, but it applies i think...

1- Open Geany and paste this text:
Code:

#!/bin/bash
rox -d <Your dir path>

--For sda4 (example), will be:
Code:

#!/bin/bash
rox -d /mnt/sda4

2- Save it to some location as <Your Name>.sh
(example) sda4.sh.

3- Give permissions to run, with right click on it and change the 'permissions' of the file.

4- Now drag the file to your desktop and made a symlink to it.
This should work... Right?

Hope to be helpful Cool

Hello GustavoYz,

You're right, it is a bit complicated but it does work great.

Now, when I click the Desktop link, it invokes rox but brings up 4 windows, two directory windows and two blank windows. I'll see if I can figure that out.

Thanks much for the detailed advice.

I thought you just need to drag and drop a directory from ROX to the desktop.

Bruce, you can drag from Rox to the desktop but when you click on the resulting desktop icon, it does not execute Rox to open the directory. At least with MacPup and Enlightenment manager.

Why don't you enlighten us to say what file manager is called for.
You probably don't realize that precise info can lead to quality replys.

After dragging the directory from the Rox-Filer to the desktop, an icon is created. When I click that icon, I would expect Rox to display the open directory. Instead, another unidentified file manager box opens a window showing a single column of icons in the directory. This file manage has no options, name or any way of determining what the program is. I am not on Puppy PC at the moment so cannot check the process list to see what new program is running. I will do that when I get a chance and post the process that is running.

That seems to be what 4.3.1 does when I click on dragged desktop icons...

I wonder why MacPup is different...

Tony,

It seems you know what you are describing. I don't think any of us has ever
heard of it. My curiosity is peaked and I'd like to look into it.

1) What version of macpup is it?

2) Did you change anything which might account for this behavior?

3) Did it ever work as you and we would expect?

Bruce

Bruce,

The version of Macpup is 5.11

I haven't changed any of the defaults, I am running from a live CD and have created a save file.

I just installed last week and haven't spent much time on it as this computer is for my wife's use. She was getting too many virus problems with windows so I am trying to convert her to linux.

I have not seen Rox-Filer work correctly on this PC as far as dragging directories to the desktop. It does work fine when I drag an executable file to the desktop, clicking on the icon brings up the correct application.

I think the file manager that runs when you click a desktop directory is enlightenment_fm but I'm not positive as no jobs change in the process list when I click one of the desktop directory icons. When I drag a directory from Rox to the desktop,it creates an actual directory (not a soft link) in /root/Desktop with permissions 777.

I am now thinking that this is a problem with Rox-Filer and still researching.

What is happening is that e17 is calling the EFM file manager cause the icon is on the e17 desktop .Rox pin board doesn't run in macpup under e17. Macpup is set up to have a clean desktop with out any desktop icons. I will see if e can change the "open with "setting for a desktop icon but I don't know if it will.

Something you can do is to make a script using the code that GustavoYz posted .Name it something like openmyfile . Put it in /usr/sbin. Then follow the instruction here just like setting up the save option except you would use /usr/sbin/openmyfile. You can use what ever icon you want. Most of my icons are in /root/icons.

The .desktop file that get created will be in /root/.local/share/applications just move it to /root/desktop

Right click will let you select rox to open the folder with but it wont permanently change the run action. Sorry but making a script looks like your only option.

I made a script to open /root/working and put it on the desktop. It worked but open two rox windows. I took the icon off the desktop and put it back in /root/.local then I added it to the ibar ( instruction on doing that are in the macpup 511 thread) And it work fine.

runt21, thanks for all the help. I had posted two more replies that don't show up on this thread. I will try your suggestion.

tonyxross, why don't you post screenshots of what you see, so people can have an idea what your problem is.
Descriptions like primitive file manager are very primitive.
