Yes I tried putting an s before the passphrase. Not sure what you mean by the network devices.

I added some pets that I made in Wary 5.0 too.
It's working pretty well so far

Edit: This newer kernel is working well on my newer hp desktop too, retrovol is working now, with the older kernel I had sound but retrovol didn't work.

Adobe Flash -- perhaps the older version 9 player would work?

Re ffmpeg on gecko: mmx was introduced after 486 - the vortexDx is a 586 without mmx or 3dnow (the newer vortexMx does have mmx though) - so it may benefit from -march=i586 -mtune=i586

Re flash9: I wrote a little sed script for flash 9 so that web sites will work that think that they need flash-10.x (but really don't)

Thanks for the tips on compilation. I am trying to compile mplayer
now and such advice is welcome.

The flash plugin (a version 10.1r102) which I put in place of the
shipped one seems to work fine (at least it still has not crashed on me).

That is what I thought .
I was really starting to wonder what I was being asked. It made no sense to me as I have no USB or PCMIA cards .

In case there is still confusion I have a Gateway M275 Tablet PC with an internal wireless minicard , an intel 200bg, that I have not been able to get to work with Wary 500 except by disabling security which is of course unacceptable. It works fine with the standard vanilla puppy 431 .

The Fujitsu t4010 TabletPC running the same card belongs to my cousin. It would not work with the standard vanilla 431 that worked on my Gateway with wep security enabled.
When it was suggested to use the special Puppy 431 with the retro kernel it worked fine on the Fujitsu .

I can connect with no security in Wary. What can I do to fix the problem if it is the pcmia loading or usb module?

Okay; Franks question is in response to previous statements I made
about the Wary versions after 098 having an extended module
loading delay that causes problems with the functioning of various
devices.

Softwares are rather different: a sound editor (SoX) and an image viewer (GPicView) so I started thinking there's somethin' wrong in my compiling environment.

(honestly I'm using Wary104 not Wary5 but I guess not that different...)

You can follow the lfs method and compile the mpfr, gmp, mpc (and libelf) into gcc statically to prevent this kind of situation.

Note: lfs does not specify libelf, but the new (much better) lto optimizations require it

Just my 2 cents worth on wireless: it really is a combination. I have 3 old laptops, 2 PC wireless cards and a usb dongle.

The Winbook Si my wife uses hates everything. It prefers the usb dongle, even though that one has to ndiswrapper the Windows driver. Today I installed Wary 104 on it. By a lot, it is the best Puppy as far as connecting to wireless on that machine. It never boots up and connects. With Wary, right click on connect, left click on autoconnect and you're there (Thank you rjbrewer). That's 2 to 12 clicks better than 431. It did take several tries to get it to connect the first time, maybe a dozen, doing the same thing over and over. That's par for the course on that machine.

My Thinkpad 600E hates new Puppies as far as wireless. It won't run the newer kernels at all. A different Puppy means doing the same thing dozens of times before it finally connects. After the first time it's good and you can switch PC cards pretty easy. It hasn't made friends with the usb dongle yet.

The Thinkpad R51 doesn't like the usb dongle. It has the slot and antenna for an internal card so that may be coming. I have learned it's the combination that matters.

As far as Wary 104, the only complaint my wife has is the 24 hour clock in the bottom right corner.

I also have a Thinkpad 600E with 192MB ram, a swap partition, and a Netgear pcmcia wifi card. How much memory do you have? Do you have a swap partition?

I've got nearly all the new Puppies to run OK in frugal install (not using CD).

There is a problem with pcmcia detection and with my Netgear card in some puppies (wary included) but I have found a combination that works which I can share with you.

I've even got sound to work!!

Thanks for this, I was looking at updating my OS from 4.31 and this seemed promising.

I seem to have two minor problems, firstly my laptop with the Intel 845g video chipset does not work with Xorg even though I have chosen Intel i810 as the driver

Secondly I do have sound available to me, but only using terminal ( alsamixer ), but not available using the ALSA soundcard wizard

Its just one of those things that happens when you change an api and why gtk+ has things that have been deprecated for years and debian stable is know as debian stale. This kind of thing shouldn't be done unless the major version number is changed. When you add to the API you should change the minor version number, but if you change existing parts or remove them, a major version bump is warranted. .... so if you are thinking about updating a library take the a version number change into careful consideration.
