Unable to load subtitle on VLC player

I have VLC Player 1.0.6 lucid (on Puppy 511) and i can't view subtitle when i want to play avi or mkv movie.

I go to Video/Subtitle track/Open file/ and after opening srt subtitle - nothing!

What is the problem?

I have needed to change the subtitles path to use existing puppy font.
In vlc: Tools > Preferences > Subtitles&OSD > Font > Browse > /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF/(choose here one of the existing) > Save. Restart VLC.

Now it should show subtitles.
