XBMC 10

#1 Post by jjmaster »

Linux and Puppy newbie and am pretty lost on trying to get XBMC 10 installed. Any help would be appreciated. I actually browsed to the PPA and clicked on a deb file which seemed to install xbmc, but it would not run.

If there is an XBMC 10 version that has minimal hardware requirements, that would be preferable because I am running puppy5.20 on older laptops and it makes the laptop rock. Tried the XBMC live CD and it doesn't boot properly on the older hardware. Was hoping for a pet file or some easy instructions to get a Puppy5.2/XBMC combo that could be my new HTPC. Could be a really popular combo since the XBMC Live CD has demanding hardware requirements.

Well I think you answered your own question "XBMC has demanding hardware requirements"

Puppy isn't going to change that, yes it may run on old laptop OK but run it as an HTPC I dunno

But saying that if you manage it let us know

I will let folks know how it runs on different levels of hardware if someone can help me get it installed and running. I tried puppy on a high end machine as well and was still unable to get XBMC working there either. So the hardware is not the problem at this point.

So if anyone can assist in getting an XBMC 10 PET or directions to get XBMC installed and working in puppy 5.2, that would be the first step. I think it's a dependency issue. Suggestions anyone?

From stu90

Requires Lucid-Puppy and plenty of space in save file.

Thanks chrome307, Stu90 and whomever else contributed to this. Will try to test it in the next week or so on different hardware and see how they respond.

Just to understand, the first PET is XBMC 10 itself, the second is Python 2.6 which I guess is because python is a required dependency. Now for the third link to the Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid.pet, would not this requirement depend on your specific video card? I have an Nvidia card in my machine and Lucid 5.20 recommended a specific Nvidia driver and not the XOrg High driver. Am I missing something here?

You do not need the "Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid.pet".

Tried it out on my Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop (Circa 2002)
Specs: Intel® Mobile Pentium® 4 (400-MHz front-side bus), 256 MB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go™ (32 mb video memory).

OS: Puppy 5.20
GFX Driver: Nvidia version recommended by puppy.

Steps:

1) Decided to ignore installing Xorg high pet cause I already had the Nvidia driver installed.

2) Installed the Python 2.6 pet file. Since this is an official package, I actually went through the puppy software installer to install it. Funny thing is that some warning or error messages appeared that dependent files were missing, but the final dialog box stated it was installed successfully. Didn't seem to be a show stopper, so I moved on to step 3.

3) Installed XBMC10 pet file from link (Thanks stu90 for this). Install reported that it was successful. I found XBMC in the menu entry under multimedia, but there was no icon next to the menu entry words. I believe in the past I ran installs of the xbmc .deb file from their repository and it created the icon correctly. So this may be a problem with stu90's xbmc pet file. Not sure about that, will have to ask him. As this also did not seem to be a show stopper, I went ahead and tried to run it by clicking on the XBMC menu entry with the missing icon.

4) XBMC launched, but stated it needed 24bit gfx. Realized my nvidia driver was set at 16bit. Ran the xorg wizard and chose Nvidia 32bit gfx and rebooted. Desktop screen looked as though it had nicer gradient colors. Went ahead and launched the icon-less xbmc menu entry under multimedia menu group.

5) XBMC seemed to launch and run fine. Moving the mouse around the screen and choosing different options worked. Noticed a slight delay in responsiveness on choosing some menu items, but not enough to make it unusable. So decided to do a real test and play some video. Went into the video section and installed the TED streaming video plugin as well as the YouTube plugin. Went ahead and fired up TED and watched a video. It worked great! No stuttering and nice smooth playback. Mind you I was on a wireless G network also. I went ahead and fired up the YouTube plugin and the videos were choppy and out of synch with the audio. This may be due to YouTube Flash and acceleration under linux and not XBMC.

Will be fooling around with it more tonight, but overall I am extremely happy with the results. This Laptop may indeed turn out to be a quite usable HTPC after all thaks to puppy linux. To understand the advantage that running Puppy Linux 5.20 provided, I have a great comparison. This same lapptop is booting Ubuntu. 10.4 with the native Nvidia driver as well. For general usage such as surfing, the laptop performs decently. Installation of XBMC 10 was painless in Ubuntu and it created the Icon and menu entry correctly. When I tried to run XBMC under Ubuntu, the application barely was able to run. The menu's were barely responsive and the machine basically hung and became unresponsive when trying to play a video. The same laptop running puppy allows XBMC to be responsive and play video.

Hooray to puppy!

Hi jjmaster,
Glad you managed to get it working - regarding the menu icon i probably missed of the image file extension in the desktop file.

This is not to hard to fix if you want to try yourself?

navigate to /usr/share/applications
look for the XBMC desktop file - right click on it and open as text > look for the Icon= entry >if there is no file extension try adding .xpm to the end of it.
save the file then in a terminal run: fixmenus.

If XBMC runs on your system you should also be able to run Boxee media center as well.

Just checked my hardware on the Dell 8200 laptop and it turns out the laptop only has 256 mb of memory and 32 mb video memory. In my prior post I listed it as 512 mb of main memory and was not sure if it had 32 or 64 mb video memory. Makes the impact of puppy all that more impressive to enable XBMC to run decently.

Haven't had a chance to look into fixing the icon issue yet. Was wondering how user created pets get into some sorta repository? I think it's great this forum is there to answer requests, but should the pets live here or be linked to users individual websites? Isn't there some way they can be vetted and put into a semi official repository? This seems to be a shortcoming of puppy in general.

On a similar thread, Stu90.. I see what you have been making portable linux app packages, what is the difference between portable apps and pets?

Hi jjmaster
The portable linux apps are nothing to do with me - they are built for Ubuntu, fedora etc we just have a bit of luck that a few of them work on Puppy to. 8)

The portable apps are just that portable meaning you don't need to install them - regarding Puppy .pet and .sfs packages they are explained on this link.
http://www.puppylinux.com/development/p ... gement.htm

also here is a .sfs for Boxee for Lucid puppy, it is a newer version that the portable apps version.

Stu90,

Finally got around to trying the icon fix you described above, but it did not work. Can you help?

In the XBMC desktop file change the icon entry to:

Icon=/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/xbmc.png

Then in terminal run: fixmenus

and restart JWM

I have been using this for a little while now (in Lucid Puppy)... Thought I would add my thanks to Stu90 for the pet :)

I use the Nvidia Binary driver, and IIRC, I needed to install the XBMC pet, the Python pet, and lupu-glxgears pet.(that I found in the forum) to get it to work.

Also, a nice addon for XBMC is Navi-X: http://website.navi-x.org/downloads.html

Yes, this is a thorn in my side. The problem is that PPM does not find the dependencies where it expects so it concludes they are missing. With some programs I am able to fool it with symlinks, but as I recall i could not fool it with Python. I have added the phrase *Ignore Errors*

If you have not, you might want to update the Lupu PPM repo
Quickpet -> More Pets -> Update Lupu PPM

-----------------------------------------------------------

For what it's worth, I think it's great that people can and are using XBMC, Banshee, Boxee, VLC, and other high performance media players--even Clementine ;-)

IMHO this makes Puppy useful to a broad range of people.
