I had read on Barry's blog that he had made another tweak to the Foxfire pet.

Finally got around to testing it on my machine this morning. After downloading the new pet from the link posted on his blog, I now have Foxfire(Namoroka 3.6.13) and SM browser and mail client all working together.

Had to move back to Wary 5.0 from Lupu 5.2.0 where I've been quite happily using Firefox and Thunderbird for a couple of weeks now, but figured I had better test the tweak since I was one of the ones 'complaining' about it..

Thanks again for all your work on this issue and Puppy in general.

Hello all.. I started a new thread for my issue with the IBM A22M.

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=64482

I have the same issue with WARY 5.0.

ALSA & numerous retrovol pets did not resolve. Problem occurs after reboot every time I listen to WABC News Talk Radio via internet. Never happens in 431. Only solution is to save a copy of the good save file in a folder and use it to revert to good sound. Wary_500.SFS file always OK. Somehow it is the Kernel which sends the RAM file to save at shutdown that is defective.

Can I delete the vmlinuz & copy the good 431 vmlinuz into the WARY folder?

How to boot Wary using grub4dos?

I've been booting Puppy 2.16 and 4.12 by chaining from the Windows XP bootloader to grub4dos to a USB flash drive as described in:

http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.php?t=1058

However, this method does not work for wary 5.0. Using the following entry in menu.lst, wary does not seem able to find wary_500.sfs in the root of the FAT16 USB flash drive.

title wary puppy 5 persistent (not working)
rootnoverify=(hd0,1)
kernel /nixboot/wary50/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 pmedia=usbflash
initrd /nixboot/wary50/initrd.gz

Tried as suggested. Got

"Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives ....
(next in red:) pausingwary.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console."

I think that is the same error message as with the original boot codes.

Booting wary using grub4dos

#308 Post by carolus »

I put copies of wary_500.sfs in all of: 1) the root of the USB flash, 2) the root of the hard drive system partition (Windows XP on partition 2), and 3) in /nixboot/wary50 on the hard drive, and then tried booting with the following grub4dos menu.lst entry:

title wary puppy 5 persistent
rootnoverify=(hd0,1)
kernel /nixboot/wary50/vmlinuz
initrd /nixboot/wary50/initrd.gz

This gave the message "searching deeper, sub-sub-folders in partitions", and finally booted successfully. Apparently wary could not find the .sfs in either the flash drive or the root of the hard drive, and dug down to find the third copy in a sub-sub-directory.

I'm now booting successfully with /nixboot/wary50/wary_500.sfs on the hard drive using:

title wary puppy 5 persistent
rootnoverify=(hd0,1)
kernel /nixboot/wary50/vmlinuz psubdir=nixboot/wary50
initrd /nixboot/wary50/initrd.gz

Unlike other puppies, I can't read wary_500.sfs from the root of the flash drive, with or without pmedia=usbflash. Maybe a bug?

Addendum: Although wary boots now, persistence doesn't work. When I create the snapshot file, choosing the directory as the root of the flash drive (changing from the suggested default of /nixboot/wary50, a directory that exists only on the hard drive), it creates the file but does not read it when rebooting. Wary is finding neither the .sfs nor the .2fs file when they are in the root of the flash drive.

In case it is not clear, I am booting from an NTFS hard disk but saving the persistence file to a FAT USB flash drive. My BIOS does not support booting from USB.

I'm not sure what this means but I'm trying to get USBs to work on Wary 5.5 inside a virtual box running on windows 8.1. I notice that the virtual box has the following USB controller enabled:
"USB 2.0 (EHCI)"

In the virtual box under device/input/usb I can select from the following options

-- USBest Technology SIS HID Touch COntroller [0100]
-- Logitech USB Optical Mouse [6300]
-- TOSHIBA Exteral USB 3.0 [0316]
-- Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd. USB2.0 HD UVC WebCam [690]
-- Generic USB2.0-CWR [3900]
-- Atheros Communications Bluetooth USB Host Controller [0001]
-- Verbatim, Ltd [1075]
-- Verbatim SONE N GO [1075]

One of the USB devices I have for sure is Verbatim.

If I can't get the USB to work is there any way that I can create a save file. I have guest services working but I can't save the save file to the shared folder.

apologies, replied:

Edit: In the meantime, until I figure out how to get the USB to work on the virtual box or until someone is kind enough to assist I think I found a work around. I am using the re-master feature in in lieu of a save file. It seems to be working at the moment. We shall see if I can boot with it.

I had some trouble at fist. Had to unmounts sr0 and remount to get it to work. Also I originally booted the VB from the iso rather than the CD so I had to burn the iso to a CD and then switch the VB CD device from Iso to host drive. The only worked after reverting to a previous snapshot. Anyway, since people want more feed back I will let people know if it worked. If I am rambling too much than apologies again....

So, the remaster failed to write on the virtual machine. Perhaps I needed to insert a blank disk. I thought it would be able to write over the RW CD. Anyway, I was able to create a save file on the virtual hard drive. I didn't realize I could do this until I tried running the universal installer. I first ran gparted as though it was a real hard drive. I'm not sure if I needed to run the universal installer first or not but at least I have a Save file now. In theory I should be able to copy this save file to a USB and since my USB drive isn't working on the virtual machine (see above) I will have to move it either via the internet connection or via the shared folder (i.e. virtual box guest service).

Anyway, from all my ramblings perhaps it is clear why I don't always reply. I try a lot of things to get something to work, and I don't know if people want to read about all my dead ends. After 200 posts, I still have a lot to learn about puppylinux. I still feel quite novice.

Being able to share the internet was only the first step of making the old PC useful. I have to be able to get a better browser on Wary (see here & here), and to do that I need to be able to work on the pets I need on an upstairs computer and so that is why I am using a virtual box upstairs to develop pets for my OS that is in the basement.

a. With a CD-RW:
You MUST first wipe/delete the existing content, and only then burn using the new ISO.
b. With a DVD-RW:
No need to delete it first; just write to it.
I believe it deletes automatically before writing.
