Thank you Shinobar. I will get right on it for LiveCD/LiveDVD use.

Question: Was Lucid version ever fixed for LiveCD use? I had found in the past that it would not run after system setup, test, and use....Then reboot and session save. One this had occurred, on rebooot, SAMBA does not run and there was no fix (except for having knowledge to manually reset libraries by hand). This was reported several times.

Edited: I don't see the PET for LiveCD use. What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your answer

Please use the sfs_load for the Live CD use.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=64354

Note that my samba package is so large to install with pet.
The RAM/pupsave can be filled up.
The sfs_load may well manage it.

I am Confused: Are you saying that the problems experienced with SAMBA 3.5.6 Pet used in Pup5.2 tests experience problems at LiveCD session save back to the CD? Or are you saying something else?

If so, is that why SAMBA was incomplete on LiveCD reboot using the saved session file on CD?

As I remembered it; it seemed that your package was storing files in areas that PUP5.2 would NOT save to over a reboot. Was that not true?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

PET works with PPM

Shinobar, I know that your PET for WARY is rather large. I would like to test it though. If you have a moment sometime, would you post it.

Thanks

Samba PET with multisession CD

Ah gcmartin, you are right.
Confirmed with Lucid Puppy 5.2. In case using the PET and save back the session to CD, the samba fails, because saving back to CD drops the directory '/var/opt/smba/locks'.

I will make new package, but for now, the SFS with the sfs_load shold work.

P.S. I am not going to provide samba in PET other than the bugfix for lucid. Because it is danger for limited RAM. The PPM gives no error messages even the RAM or the root file system is filled up.
The sfs_load is usable for RAM mode.

SWAT - did anyone succeed to implement this

#28 Post by ags »

Hi,

I'm struggling with the samba config file, and I'm wondering if anyone made swat work in puppy Lucid 5.2.

I installed the samba-3.5.6-1-lucid.sfs and tried to add a swat service (script) in inet.d like this:

#!/bin/sh
# swat is the Samba Web Administration Tool
swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /opt/samba/sbin/swat swat

What did I miss?

It would be great if someone had an answer to this one.
I've allready been using samba (previous version) and would like to make my home network a little better and secure.

Understanding your Newbie user concerns on RAM

#29 Post by gcmartin »

Hi @Shinobar
I understand your issue with SAMBA, newbies, and low RAM.
BUT
I need your PET for SAMBA to setup and run a LiveCD environment that survives over reboot. Will you help by PM'ing me with a PET for testing. (And, Shinobar, I will take responsibility to provide feedback, test findings, which low-RAM configuration are appropriate, etc. if you'll make a PET available to me with matches this SFS.)

Thanks in advance.

Hi @AGS
Yes, I understand your concern. I don't have a solution to that, BUT, this might help.
  1. Use Geany to edit your /etc/SAMBA/smb.conf
  2. Make all manual changes you like or replace it with the one you have from work.
  3. Save your Geany session
  4. Open a terminal/console and type "testparm".
This will syntax check your SAMBA configuration file for you.

Once testparm is "happy" (no syntax issues), restart your SAMBA service via the terminal command, "/etc/init.d/smb restart" and you are in business.

This is what we used with SAMBA before SWAT (a GUI) and its still maintained and updated as the test tool of choice with all SAMBAs.

This version of SAMBA works very well and will replicate the same as you have at work. (In fact this is the SAMBA, 3.5.6 that ships with ALL major Distros) This version is stable, secure, high in functionality, and supported all over the Internet.

Hope this helps

Check out Samba-TNG. Its default security mode is "user" instead of "share". So you have more network security options out of the box.

Problem with

#32 Post by gcmartin »

This occurs (seems we are re-visiting same problems that occurred in 3.5.5)

Code: Select all

# smbclient -L localhost
init_iconv: Conversion from UTF-16LE to CP850 not supported
init_iconv: Attempting to replace with conversion from UTF-16LE to ASCII
init_iconv: Conversion from UTF-8 to CP850 not supported
init_iconv: Attempting to replace with conversion from ASCII to ASCII
              o
              o

              o
              o
init_iconv: Conversion from UTF8 to CP850 not supported
init_iconv: Attempting to replace with conversion from ASCII to ASCII
init_iconv: Conversion from UTF-16BE to CP850 not supported
init_iconv: Attempting to replace with conversion from UTF-16BE to ASCII
Password:
Any ideas on how to avoid these, now, and on future upgrades? (Is this a WARY problem, a urxvt problem or a SAMBA definition problem?)

Hope this helps

Install YASSM. It contains the missing code page that eliminates these messages.

It maybe harmless but occurs under lacking the file '/usr/lib/gconv/IBM850.so'.
The multilingual Wary-500m09 has the IBM850.so. Think Lucid Puppy 5.2 also has. EDIT: Lucid Puppy 5.2 doesn't have.
Or, rcrsn51 provides a PET: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... &start=280

I do not understand what does it mean, 'a LiveCD environment that survives over reboot'.
I guess you are saying the multi-session, but we also have another solutions...
You can make a pupsave on HDD, then the SFS loaded by any measure survives after reboot.
If you don't like to touch the HDD, you can remaster the Live CD after loading the SFS by any measure.
If you like more easy way, burn the cd with the SFS and the sfs_load-*.pet included. (multilingual Wary-500m09 already has the sfs_load built in.)

If you insist on the PET, you can convert the SFS to a PET by any tools.

Re: samba PET

#38 Post by shinobar »

Be caution: This size of PET easily fills up your RAM.
Using the PET on 512MB RAM PC without swap may corrupts.

I tested the samba-3.5.6-1-lucid.pet on 512MB RAM virtual machine with the Lucid Puppy 5.2.
Firstly i installed firefox, then the free space is only 147MB left, already not enough to install the samba PET. Downloaded the samba PET, then it becomes 105MB.
I tried using the PPM. The PPM finishes with 'success' message, but apparently some files are lacking,
(The PPM does not show any error messages but the error is left at /tmp/xerrs.log.)

Shinobar, can I test this PET you used. See your PM.

Hi Guys,

I must be doing something really wrong, or just missed something obvious. I have installed the 3.5.6 sfs in lucid 5.25 and edited the smb.conf to share my selected directory. If I open lamesmbexplorer I can see the directory shared, but I can't open it. It complains about the wrong password. Is there a password? Do I have to set it up? Info on that seems to be missing in this thread.

Thanks in advance for some help.

Paul
