HP Omnibook 4150 sound set up

#1 Post by oldroy »

This is a variation on what Bill did in one of the Ubuntu forums. It's actually easier with Lucid Puppy 5.2

System: HP Omnibook 4150, Pentium II @ 360 MHZ, 245 meg RAM, Lucid Puppy 5.2 full install to the EXT3 formatted hard drive with 512 Mb. linux swap space. The notorious Neomagic NM256 is also in there.

This was the last of several attempts to get sound working.

1. Checked the logs, yep the NM256 is blacklisted.

2. Exit to command level, run alsaconf, set things up for the generic cs4231 sound card then rebooted.

3. Edit the alsaconf stuff at the bottom of /etc/modules.conf

4. Change the parameters on the options line to:

options snd-cs4231 port 0x534 irq=5 dma1=1 dma2=0

5. Save the file and reboot

6. Yay! The speaker icon is now there but shows as muted. And its not muted by the mute button.

7. Right click on the speaker icon and go to full menu, click the top box, set volume, and things will now work. You might also have to fool around with alsamixer a bit as well.
