I was looking at the skype site and went to the download part.
Saw there was a static binary for skype 2.1.0.81
Downloaded the tar.bz2 file.
Unpacked it to a directory outside the save file.
Clicked on the skype binary and it just run.
Not having a userid, I creates one and I was up and running.
No hassle with pet or sfs.

Your thread is just what I was looking for.Béèm wrote:I was looking at the skype site and went to the download part.

...
But I'm new to Linux, please detail how I could install this in Puppy Linux,
using the tar.bz2 file that I have saved on a flashdrive?
How do I unpack it in Linux?
Also, is this the type of Skype version you can use to call landlines, and receive calls, to/from your Skype-out phone# with Skype credit?
(I know all versions of Skype allow free calls using one's userid, but personally, I do not want to use/reveal my Skype userid in any Skype communication).

click on the tar.bz2 file.
Select all files to unpack
Give the destination directory.
I did choose one outside the save file.
The files will be unpacked in that destination directory.
There is an executable skype
Click on it and skype will run.
You will have to create a skype account.
Yes this is the skype with which you can make free calls with other skype users or you can buy credit to phone to land lines.

I'm so happy it is this version!Béèm wrote:Yes this is the skype with which you can ... phone to land lines.
Thanks someone sent me a PM that went to same type install info and it's really great that Skype is so easy to install in Puppy.
Elsewhere,
I've been trying unsuccessfully to install an other version of Skype on a WinCE.Net 4.2 HPC: Psion Netbook Pro, which can run Linux.
Does anyone know if Puppy can run on that machine?
If then my problem would be solved, with this Linux version of Skype!

about last Skype version
if you see http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-sky ... r/windows/
you'll find with skype 5.3 you can use video
when I tried skype 2.2 I didn't find the way to use the webcam
is it I didn't recognize the way to use the webcam using skype 2.2 ?
if necessarily needing skype 5.3, is there a way to use it in puppy?
thanks for any advice

Re: Skype, easy install
How installing a software with a one-click pet can be more a hassle than untar, move folders in /usr, /usr/share etc...Béèm wrote:No hassle with pet or sfs.
I made out this pet off that .tar.bz2 file right to avoid that any time I try a new puplet
Moreover the pet is smaller since I moved out all the NLS files and DOCs plus removed all that useless Skype avatars.
Cheers

Skype version numbers for Windoze and Linux are not comparable since follow different development.Enrique Corbellini wrote: if necessarily needing skype 5.3, is there a way to use it in puppy?

Skyper for Linux 2.2.etc is the latest version, if you have troubles with the webcam means it has no linux drivers for it. It's the same with my Creative one, I just live with it...
