What with being Puppy5, and with all the recent association with lynxes, meerkats, narwhals and ocelots, I have been considering your Lite525 as a perfect base for a puplet aimed at impoverished Uni students in the field of - what else- Vet science!
The puplet will be aimed particularly at research functions and be loaded with sc0ttman's FireDog3.6 (plus the indispensible Zotero add-on), ImageJ, emil's 'R' statistics package, CowLog (deb), and the new Docere (coincidentally pronounced as "dog-ear", formerly "SciPlore"/FreeMind) PDF management and mindmapping tool (also deb). Here I am just writing to let you now that Barry K's new Thunar pet (1.0.2-Lucid), viewnoir-1.1-p5, Xorg_High-1.1-Lucid, and radky's PupComboPlus1.1-Lucid and recent PupSnap - all work as intended, and seamlessly.
However, problems were encountered after I installed the patched-wBar using CatDudes instructions here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... &start=135 - Firefox would not load by any method, instead throwing up the error dialogue that a version of FF was already running, when it wasn't. A full shut down and reboot seems to have resolved the issue.

I love the pared-back presentation, the ease of preference changes, the Win+D keybinding for clearing the desktop (but I must include some other Win key bindings for my mostly Windoze refugees).

Many Thanks!

Hi Puppyt thank you for the feedback. 8)
Sound like an interesting project you are embarking on there.

regarding wbar - i have not tried it but there is a lucid puppy wbar.pet in the puppy package manager, maybe that one will work better - i will give it a try later today.
If you let me know which firefox you tried i will also look into it.

Maybe worth including gparted in your puplet - as gaz1965 pointed out above there can be problems with full install not working due to gparted not being present.

there is also scsijon apps.sfs this is handy as you can quickly load it up with sfs load on the fly and have all the default puppy applications available as and when needed.

If you run into any problems let me know and i will try to help.

cheers.

I put this in here so i don't clutter up the forum with all my junk - my main focus will still be lucid 525 lite but here is a light version of Spup full.

pets: Don't use lucid lite pets as the majority of them wont work due to Spup using slackware and Lucid puppy using Ubuntu.

Spup 100 - lite
Here is a lighter version of the recently release spup 100 full.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=62750

Image

Changes pretty much the same a lucid 525 - lite with the exception of windows manager, Spup uses JWM so i just modified it slightly and left it as default.

----------------------------------------

lucid-526-lite-003
Updated to Pemasu latest lupe-18 2.6.38.4 kernel.

Should now have a proper audio fix with out having to run ALSA wizard - please check for no muted audio at first and subsequent boot.

Changed default JWM theme and removed JWM menu icons.

----------------------------------

Lupu-lite-002 - 2.6.38.4 kernel

Included my ham fisted attempt at audio fix - plus some missing dependencies for mplayer and XBMC

----------------------------------

Was in two minds if to post this or not as there is a bug with audio but maybe some one can figure it out?

Audio bug:
On first boot audio is muted - right clicking on the retrovol volume icon in the tray and ticking 'Master' will turn on audio but note it will be muted again on next boot.
Work around seems to be tick the 'Master' box in retrovol then run ALSA sound wizard from the menu > Setup > ALSA sound wizard you should only need to do this once for audio to work as normal and not be muted at boot.
-----------------------

Lupu-lite-01 - 2.6.38.4 kernel

This is Lucid 525 lite with Pemasu's Lupe-17 2.6.38.4 kernel.

Whats changed:
Updated kernel
ISO now down to 100mb size
New light gray GTK theme as default
New dark rox icon theme as default

tripping up in the Lite fantastic

G'day again stu90,
stu90 wrote: Hi Puppyt thank you for the feedback. 8)
Sound like an interesting project you are embarking on there...
Thanks for your interest in my little walk on the wildish side. While it will never aspire to the dizzy heights of BioPuppy or ChemPup (http://biopuppy.org/ and http://www.chemtoolbox.com/index.php/ab ... oxcom.html), I have always hankered after a general research-type dogsbody puplet, and your strip-backed Lucid-lite looks just the ticket.
Alas, this is the moon-shooting ideals of a non-programming, barely-typing Windows Refusenik (not refugee) and pretty soon found myself embarking up a whole series of wrong trees before I realised I was embarking mad to think I could pull it off painlessly.
Here's the core of what I was aiming for:
1) SciPlore PDF management, bibliography integration and visualisation tool (from the FreeMind crew: http://www.sciplore.org/software/sciplo ... /#download, though the application will have a name change from v16 away from "SciPlore Mindmapping" to "Docear". (robwoj44 provided a pet for beta10 here:http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 162#431162, but I was never - am still not able- to integrate the software properly in Puppy. Yes, you can drag'n'drop any number of image, doc and pdf files into the mindmap but you are then unable to click on the objects to have the requisite image, doc or pdf reader and highlighter re-open those data files. Does a great job of displaying the bookmarks (headings and subheadings) of your PDF files in any given directory, but does not link to those locations in the actual PDF file in Puppy Linux, unlike that found in Windows versions etc. Latest version beta15 is only available for Linux as a zip file.)
2) KeepNote organisational tool for writing and research projects. (http://rasm.ods.org/keepnote/index.shtml#about. No pet or sfs yet available, just zip file. Alas - doesn't appear to be open-source - does anyone know of an open-source alternative??)
3) The 'R' statistics environment.(emil's forum and pets here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=51141)
4) ImageJ digital analysis package.(http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij). robwo44 also made a pet here of the most recent release http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=319184. Has plug-ins available for statistical analysis of digital images in 'R', and has been recently extended to the 'Fiji' package here http://pacific.mpi-cbg.de/wiki/index.php/Fiji, for which there is no pet/sfs yet available.
5) CowLog video analysis software (http://mpastell.com/cowlog/. integrates with mplayer, 'R' statistical analysis and can be modified by the user using KDE's "Kommander").
Since I was having to go with KDE (for Kommander and the "RKward" R gui - see below), I looked at Okular for PDF file functions http://okular.kde.org/ - but happily found that KPDF does a perfectly good job for what I wanted.
6) User's own choice of Office software drawn from the Puppy and Ubuntu repositories. Maybe something from the KDE branch...

WHAT WENT WRONG?
Just me, I'm thinking.
First up I removed FF_3.6.13-Lucid pet and installed sc0ttman's FireDog-3.6 as the principal browser. Installed essential add-ons Zotero http://www.zotero.org/, the wellminded puppy linux search engine and Downthemall and everything is drum-tight and super-fast (thanks sc0ttman!). I used emil's jre_1.6.0_22 pet listed here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 1&start=45 and ImageJ works, and SciPlore 10 (pet) operates to the level outlined above. I also tested AngryIP-3.084 http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67345 and it seems to be working as advertised. Needed Xarchiver_0.5.2 for the zip files and installed Python-+-2.6.4-i486 as a dependency for KeepNote. All dependencies ckecked out fine.
The R (+ R-Commander, a /GUI to help beginners using R) sfs worked like a dream.
For KDE I thought lightness was next to godliness, so went with Iguleder's KDE 3 (Trinity core: http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 1&start=90) sfs. Weird stuff happening now, with various K 'apps' working and others (like Kommander and KPDF) playing "schtum" in both Openbox and kde environments (restart from prompt with "xwin startkde". *I'M BACK IN JWM - HOW DO i GET BACK INTO OPENBOX PLEASE??). I then installed dejan555's minimal KDE pet from here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=41115 (kdelibs4c2a.pet ) and all works swimmingly in KDE and JWM - haven't yet tested in openbox. All, that is, except "RKWARD" - the additional R GUI I hoped to install to assist beginners in statistics and the R "environment" (http://rkward.sourceforge.net/). Typing 'rkward' in a terminal starts up R but doesn't carry through to load Rkward correctly. The latest zip files for SciPlore (v15) and KeepNote 0.7.2 also failed to make any impression when extracted into the root directory.

So I have a bit of a dismembered 'bitzer' here, and must ask the wider community for assistance (in the Requests) for SciPlore15 and KeepNote pets, as well as tips on properly solving the rkward dilemma.

Cheers!

P.S. Thanks too for the "heads up" on Gparted - I read gaz1965's post with great interest. I thought 'pfind' was another absolute necessity for a functional base - couldn't see if Thunar had a file search feature in-built and perhaps a KDE alternative might be friendlier to users new to Puppy (I have no real experience with KDE). Haven't yet tried pemasu's kernel or noticed the audio hitch yet, but will report back later today :)

* EDIT: Aha - type "startx openbox-session" at the prompt to resume as normal. (e.g., http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=25185)

I couldnt resist and decided to test. Works fine in my laptop. Nothing to report which I didnt know from my previous tests.
Working monitors. Powerapplet_tray does not work with 2.6.38.4 kernel. You can remove it from /root/Startup. Working monitors, at least in most hw: Gatotray, CPUtemp-1.3, Conky, Psensor, Xsensors (already installed with lm-sensors and libsensors, good catch)

Nice to see that already new kernel has got new home. No more stray dog.

Thank you of your experiment. Looks good, works fine, responds snappy. As Puppy should.

Keepnote is open source - just downloaded the tar gz file and it contains the program source written in python. You can use that to make a pet - but python is a dependency, maybe others.

Thanks myke - great that it's open-source - went back to the homepage to actually read the destructions : " needs Python2.5 (or any greater 2.X), sqlite (version >= 3.5.0), PyGTK, gtkspell (optional)" . Downloaded all but PyGTK from the Ubuntu repositories (via PPM) and am downloading technosaurus' Python+-2.6.1-i486.pet from his http://code.google.com/p/puppy-development/downloads site as I type.

Manual frugal install of Lupulite (2.6.38.4)on my old P4 test box.Basically onboard Intel sound, internet and graphics.
Display (1024x768).......good on initial boot.
Sound........... muted on boot but applied fix, working and persistent.
Internet........not connected on boot.No problem getting it working but not persistent, necessary to reconnect every boot. Wired DSL.

No problem with fullscreen video in Firefox.
Looks solid. Now to start adding some stuff. :)

EDIT:

Ended up using the classic Network Wizard instead of SNS and connection is now persistent.

Hi Puppyt,
Sounds like your project is coming along. 8)
I have never tested KDE desktop environment in lucid lite - infact i cant recall ever using it, i have on a couple of occasion tried to make .pets out of KDE applications and found they needed at lot of dependencies.

What i do for installed (none python - perhaps there is some similar equivalent for python application? ) applications that don't work is look for the application executable (cog looking icon usually located in /usr/bin) then in a terminal type the command ldd and the application executable location as an example:
ldd /usr/bin/urxvt
This should display what dependencies that application relies on and show any dependencies that are missing.

I did have a look at KeepNote 0.7.2 and tried to make a quick pet with the listed dependencies on the site but my efforts failed - i don;t know much about python other than pretty much every time i try to make a .pet of a python application it doesn't work :(
Not had chance to look at SciPlore yet.
Just as a side note: it is always worth putting up a post in the Requests forum for any application there is no .pet for.
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/index.php?f=62

lucid lite does have a file search and archiver / extractor available in midnight commander file manager (that reminds me, there is no menu entry for midnight commander) - for file search open up a terminal and type the command: mc then go to option > find file.

If you find yourself stuck at prompt and not auto logged into a windows manager - for JWM and Openbox the commands are:

xwin JWM
xwin openbox

cheers.

Lucid 525 lite + experimental Lucid lite 2.6.38.4 kernel

#96 Post by Billtoo »

I've been having fun adding applications to lupulite and I thought it
was time to remaster the live cd but no luck with that.
It created a 169mb iso which I burned to a dvd and after booting the
dvd I still end up with lupulite 1.0,all the stuff that I added isn't
there.
I guess I messed up somehow during the remaster or maybe the script is
broken.
It's working great otherwise, just need to backup my save file in case
I break something :)

Hi Billtoo,
I have not tested the built in remaster script - I use Woofy to remaster lupu lite:
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=57037

I took another stab at the builtin remaster script and it created a
custom-puppy.iso which I then ran through woofy.
I just went with the defaults in woofy and it created a my-woofy.iso
which I burned to a dvd.
Yahoo! it worked.

Thanks for pointing woofy out to me :)
