Java JDK 1.7u25, 1.6u45

#1 Post by TheAsterisk! »

The JDK for Java development, for any Puppy using SFS4. (43x and newer should be alright); if you only need the Java Runtime Environment, please use the much lighter JRE-only package.

http://www.theasterisk.tk/packages/java/jdk.html

Warning! Some older versions of LibreOffice do not seem to work with Java 7. If you need any of the Java-dependent functions of and older LibreOffice release, you may want to use Java 6. (Writer, Calc and Impress usually don't need Java, but Base and Math may.)
If you are running LibreOffice 3.5 or newer, though, Java 7 shouldn't be a problem.

NOTE FOR SEAMONKEY 1-SERIES: The Java browser plugin I've linked to doesn't work with the older Seamonkey 1-series. To get Java working in those browsers, please follow the steps below:
  1. Remove the symlink "/usr/mozilla/plugins/libnpjp2.so"
  2. Link "/usr/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so" into "/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/" (in the ROX Filer, drag and drop and select the "link (relative)" option)
  3. Enable Java from the Seamonky menu (Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced)

jre

TheAsterisk,

Thank you for this but it is big (Java is big I know). Would you consider compiling just the jre please. Is that much smaller?

Yes, this is pretty big.
I didn't package up the plain JRE because others have done that. I know shinobar made a package. It's about 36 MB- much lighter than the JDK.

If you really want me to, though, even with shinobar's package, then yeah, that's no problem.
Why not test that one first, and then see if it works for you?

should be able to work as a JRE installation for your system, too.
Hi TheAsterisk,

Thank you for packaging the JDK.
Have you had much experience (so far), with using this version of the JDK,
alongside the eclipse_SDK-3.6.1.sfs package that is located in the same
download folder?
Do they work well, together, on Puppy 5.1.1?

Thanks, and Happy New Year,

@ilanrab: That Eclipse SFS has a thread somewhere, but the forums are pretty cluttered...

They should both work together, though I don't actually know much about coding Java, and I don't use Eclipse. My brother and my mother both decided to take classes on it at about the same time, and they asked me to get a handful of related programs installed on their computers, and my brother was already running Puppy. That's why there are DrJava and Netbeans packages there, too.
They haven't complained about any problems, but I don't really know what they use it for, specifically.

TL;DR: That combination will run on Lucid 511, but I don't do Java, so I haven't really thoroughly tested it.

Finally, if you're going to be looking around the whole folder, please read my note.

Anyway, hope I've helped!

I certainly don't mind, and I'll add your links to the first post.
Thanks for providing these java sfs files.
No problem!

EDIT: Apparently, I've been symlinking a deprecated JRE library in my packages.
I'm going to change that in a few minutes, repack the SFS, and then upload the newer, proper package. It will still be the same version, just corrected.
When I do that, though, the package won't be available, so I'll remove and then later reinstate the link in the first post.
Package corrected and uploaded. (green_dome's mirror has been updated, too.)

Updated the menu entries. The *.desktop files for the JDK previously pointed to the wrong icon image. Fixed that.

No version change.

I recently (today) tried installing the jce (unlimited strength cryptography extension) and it doesn't seem to be working. I am using 1.6u22 (not installed in home so I can include it in a remaster) and my programs that require it are saying that it is still not installed and when I go to the directory that they are installed in to test them I am getting a Main class attribute missing error. Any Advice or has anyone else successfully installed jce?

Edit: Nevermind I was a little too hasty in posting this question, I installed it in the wrong spot
