Nomenclature can be tricky at times.Q5sys wrote:...
As for the version number thing. While I like the idea... my only concern is that new PuppyLinux users will automatically think 6 must be better than 5. My preference of Slack over Ubuntu aside... That is not will not be the case for every other person. Really... once you give it a number you have this problem. I prefered the naming of puppy instead of the number... IE LucidPup or SlackPup. Could we perhaps do both? Instead of just refering to version number also include the base? That way it would be quite obvious that "Lucid Puppy 5.3" is not equal to "Slack Puppy 6.0". Some people seem to do this from time to time when posting... Maybe its something we could consider doing more routinely?
.
For organizational purposes, it makes sense to switch, every few years, between a numerics based versioning, an alphabetic oriented one, and a mixed naming convention system.
The fluidity allows for growth changes to occur, without sacrificing control. Losing control over the nomenclature allows for much misunderstanding to occur down the road.
I like the idea of a mixed naming convention such as:
- PuppyLinux Lucid 5.2.5
- PuppyLinux Slack 5.2.5
- PuppyLinux T2 5.2.5
If the is no version "T2 5.2.5", that's fine. If there is, it can fit within the confines of this mixed naming convention..

loaded jre from 525 for openoffice
just installed openoffice 3.3 after copying previously installed java folder and openoffice sfs from 525 folder
I see support in this thread for having 5.3 support Ubuntu software and I see resistance to misleadingly giving a Slackware based Puppy Linux the 5.3 designation. However decisions about the Future of Puppy Linux will be made by Royalty (developers) and not by peasants such as myself.
I still prefer letter designations, like UPup, SPup, DPup etc...
But I think making the next Slackware Puppy the 6 series makes the most sense...BK always upped a full version number whenever he changed bases, and we should too....Much clearer to the end user, IMHO....

And that's a very fortunate situation. If frustrated, power-hungry peasant individuals would be boss here, it would kill all creativity, all friendships, all excitement. It would be the shortest way to kill Puppy.puppyite wrote:However decisions about the Future of Puppy Linux will be made by Royalty (developers) and not by peasants such as myself.
Nobody, EVER, called the Puppy devs Royalty.
You are a sad ego.
I had given you a second chance, but you blew it totally.
If you are a peasant, you're an insult to the farmers.
Can't you just see, that everyone involved here, is doing it for the fun, or even joy, of it? Puppy has become what it is, because there was always room for chaos and uncertainty. Behind the scenes the developers might argue fiercely, but always from a mutual and nourishing respect.
I like Puppy mainly because of the beautiful organic process that has led to its success. I was here before Puppy 1.0 existed, and have evidence in spades that Barry and the Puppy crew are the kind of people I would love to have as friends.
Go home puppyite and think a little.

You're acting as if Lucid Puppy is dying and will no longer be developed. I dont know where you are getting that idea. Dev for Lucid will continue (from my understanding). Hell, people here are still Developing for Puppy 2.x So why do you see it as Ubuntu only or you're ideas are being suppressed? You and anyone else is still welcome to dev for Lucid.puppyite wrote:I see support in this thread for having 5.3 support Ubuntu software and I see resistance to misleadingly giving a Slackware based Puppy Linux the 5.3 designation. I've been working on LHP for a long time. Even when Official Puppy went Lucid... I (and many others) kept working on a previous puppy version.
I use the term Royalty to illustrate how (some) decisions are made and that generally speaking decisions about Puppy Linux are not made democratically (or if they are they do not include peasants, a.k.a. average users, such as myself). That constitutes the entire intent of my use of the word Royalty.
Hello,
I for one, intend to continue to dev for Lupu...
As much as I dont like Ubuntu, its their mindset, not their repos...those I love..
Puppy is Puppy, regardless of the binary compatibility it was built against...
No one tripped on 3 series being Slack based....or 4 being T2...
But say Ubuntu, and even I go "umm no way"...
But it works...
Aint that the Puppy mission????
And I think 6, or 5.3, whatever, will be great...
Slack is great, and 3 series was great to build against...
It goes with the whole thing I said long before Woof, and is even more true now...
"We will take the best of that which is yours, and make it ours, to bring us closer to perfection...We are Puppy...Resistance is Futile"....

I and others in this thread support the continuation of Lucid as the five series exclusively, the only impediment seems to be that the Royalty are not listening.Q5sys wrote:Beyond that... thats why there was discussion of making a slack based offical puppy version to be 6. That way Lucid can use the entire 5.x range.
More’s the pity.As for your comments about democracy. Where are you getting that idea? A *nix distro is NEVER a democracy. It's always led by a small group of people who make the decisions.

You've made comments about how the US is #1. Perhaps you aught to check your history. The US is not a demoracy either. It's a republic. A small group of people made decisions. Not every choice is voted on by the populous. Hence why there is always public outcry against policies that those in charge put in place. And guess what, public outcry rarely makes an impact.puppyite wrote:More’s the pity.As for your comments about democracy. Where are you getting that idea? A *nix distro is NEVER a democracy. The best you and I can do, is voice our opinions and hope they are heeded. I've advocated for Slack to be v6. But that decision is not up to me. But I'm not going to go create a post complaining about the issue. I'd try to talk to those who are making that decision and explain my viewpoint. In the end, unless I can step in and take charge... its really not up to me.
Slackware based puppy
Speaking of voice and opinion. I would appreciate some feedback on Slackware packages availability.jonyo wrote:...and HOW that voice or opinion...
Please take a look at http://www.linuxpackages.net and find out which of your favorite applications, utilities, or drivers are still supported in package form. If your favorite packages are not available for version 13 of Slackware, that's an issue to be taken into account.
Please do a quick search, for your packages, and get back to us with your results. Thanks in advance.

Slackware also uses a build system where users can submit build scripts for others who wish to compile certain software on their computers. As a repository Slackware has less packages available than say Arch Linux. I've considered making an Arch version of Puppy but I think its WAY beyond my skill level.
And of course we do have a requests section here. If there is a piece of software that you want that you cant find... make a post about it and perhaps someone here will help you with it. I've gotten help that way from others here. Thats one of the best parts of the puppy community
I wrote a big thread separate to this one, but could probably belong in this thread. It is here http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=67974
Having just read through the ten pages in this thread (slow work day), I think some of my suggestions have been covered.
For what its worth (probably nothing) I agree with some that if the base of puppy is going to change, the first number should also.
