mp280 scanner fails again!

#1 Post by VK6FUN »

my canon mp280 was working great, and it still prints with CUPS, but the scanner now locks up with the following error messages:

May 19 12:53:17 (none) user.warn kernel: usb 2-2: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'scangearmp' sets config #1
May 19 12:53:17 (none) user.warn kernel: usb 2-2: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'scangearmp' sets config #1
May 19 12:54:20 (none) user.debug kernel: usb 2-2: usbfs: usb_submit_urb returned -121

any ideas??

What Puppy are you using?

What scangearmp installation are you using?

What have you changed since the last time that it worked?

Boot off the Live CD and install the scangearmp components. Does it work?

Can you scan from Xsane or Peasyscan?

I set up my MP490 in Lupu with scangearmp from here and checked /var/log/messages. I got the same warnings as you, but the scanner worked fine.

People used to get the locking-up problem if they installed scangearmp without a libusb-1.0 package. It is included in my version above.

hi rcrsn51! the patron saint of puppy printing/scanning

What Puppy are you using?

absolutely nothing has changed since we did this [url]http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... =64605/url]

i haven't tried to scan for a long time now, so i was expecting the same success as i enjoyed back in february.

looking at the package manager i observe that scangearmp_mp280series-1.60.pet
is listed twice in the "installed packages" window.

also i notice that the scangearmp executable seems to have reverted itself to using libusb-0.1 (i temporarily renamed libusb-0.1 and the program failed)

uninstalling and re installing makes no difference

hmmmmmm
why did my last post contain none of the stuff i typed????
What have you changed since the last time that it worked?
absolutely nothing!!
everything is same as it was after we did this
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=64605

i have not used the scanner for a long time so i was expecting the same success as before!

strange, i notice that scangearmp_mp280series-1.60.pet is listed twice in the package manager "installed" window.

uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't help.

if i rename libusb-0.1 then scangearmp stops working so it's clearly linked against that crappy library.
these things can't change by themselves, can they?????

Do you mean that libusb-1.0 was missing?

Boot up using "pfix=ram", install these packages and do a test

Code: Select all

scangearmp_common-1.60.pet
scangearmp_mp280series-1.60.pet

rcrsn51 the patron saint of printer/scanners strikes again!

yes installing those packages on a fresh system and it all worked again.

so i rebooted back to my full system and uninstalled those two packages.

this time i made sure they were uninstalled and then immediately rebooted.

presto change-o everything is happy again.

i'm guessing what happened is that the battery went flat after i did the initial install and test, therefore not saving things properly.

wierd evil stuff then happened.

thanks again for fixing my brain so that i was able to fix things myself 8^)

Glad to help.

The libusb-1.0 business is a bit of a mystery. The only USB devices I have seen that require it are Canon scanners. Even the models that will work with SANE (the MP280 apparently doesn't) need libusb-1.0.

There was some discussion about making it a standard part of all Puppies, but nothing happened. I believe that 01micko's spup has it. But he owns an MP490

IT"S HAPPENED AGAIN!

scangearmp is looking for libusb-0.1 again, specifically, libusb-0.1.so.4, and that symlink is no longer there.

seems every time i reboot my pc i must reinstall the scanner driver!!

Do you have a more conventional machine besides puppeee 504 on an asus EEE PC900 on which to test this?

The scangearmp pet contains libusb-1.0. But it also over-writes a new version of libusb-0.1 for compatibility reasons. It sounds like this latter library is not getting into your savefile.

not sure what you mean by a "more conventional machine"
but it works perfectly on a emachines/win7.

i don't know enough about the layered filesystem inner workings to put forward a theory on why a shared object would not be saved.

maybe something to do with ldd?
