- unique, powerful package manager
- many office suites and printer apps and drivers in PPM and akita repo
- includes Pizzasgoods multi-user setup, although still root/spot by default
- includes Run-as-Spot tool, to easily run programs as restricted user
- security and privacy tools, with extra secure Firefox-ESR in akita repo
- massive choice of web browsers in easy installer
- easily enable/disable rox icons, startup programs, etc at first boot
- uses vlc and vlc-gtk for media player
- many apps i18n'd, lots of French, Spanish, Russian, German translations included
- includes many good console apps: elinks, doc2txt, mocp, mc,
- good for old clunkers, craptops, etc

Latest version, Jan 4th, 2014:

Akita Linux, Beta 16 ISO: Download URL and information

Devx, for compiling: akita_devx-b15.sfs (sfs3, 111MB)
(Right-click and choose 'SFS Loader' to load/install it)

More packages: Akita Repository

Or you a newer kernel: akita-beta8-k2.6.32.55.iso.
(for testing and playing with... probably buggy)

Translations in French, German Spanish and Russian wanted for all key programs - 'key' programs are the programs required to setup and install Akita.. For fixed and updated translations, you can just post the file contents here - just make sure the filename is clear - dotpup.mo, for example.

Translations: Menu entries
- Look in /usr/share/applications/
- Open a .desktop file in your text editor
- Edit the translations save, click Menu->Refresh Desktop

Translations: Simple method
- Look in /usr/share/locales/*/LC_MESSAGES for .mo files, containing translations
- many .mo files open in a text editor and can be copied, improved, etc
- some .mo files do not open in a text editor, these files require poedit, see below

Translations: gettext/poedit method
- Poediter for Akita: Download
- Install poediter, type 'poeditor' in the terminal to run it
- then look in /usr/share/doc/nls/*/, for the .po files
- these files contain the base translations, from which others are made
- the final result will be a .mo file, that can be placed in /usr/share/locales/*/LC_MESSAGES
- more info here and here (thanks rodin.s)

Hope you enjoy Akita Linux :D

help me in some way
Some very interesting ideas. :)
Look forward to it.
Turn it around.
Implement/try some of your ideas
as they develop for Spot (Puppy 5.3)
or other projects that might be compatible.

Also release often (and early)
this is the penguin way

A real project in production
is a lot better than perfect vapourware

Good luck

Scott, I'm more likely to be a boat-anchor than a help, but I would love to help test, document, or anything else that a newbie can do.

Lighthouse pup is based on Puppy 421 so you can learn a lot from their threads I guess?

I am happy you don't use 412 the kernel that one use seems to lack a lot of LAN drivers. pupitup failed to get internet and pupngo also failed internet if I remember but my memory is kind of shaky. and it only happens on some gear but 421 maybe is a good choice.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

Lobster, I doubt any of the stuff I put into Puplite will make it into any other Puppies.. But if someone likes it they can take it :) And I think I'll release an alpha, once I've got most of it done..

No point taking up half my dev time uploading known bugs and posting fixes, when i could be coding and testing... Especially when only a few kind souls will be nice enough to test an old pup4 mongrel ;)

The first few steps (upgrading glibc and gcc, etc) should be the hardest, once I am over that I will add the more interesting and 'quirky' things like extra pfix options, and so on...

Kernel switching will be pretty much dependent on goingnuts, it is too complex for me but I should be able to apply his work to mine... I know, I'm terrible ;)

About the project in general, I think I will do the following:

Code: Select all

- release an alpha with standard 2.6.25.16 and only stuff that needs testing
(kiosk mode, delayed save, glibc, ffmpeg, vlc, internet, etc)

- then test heavily, see what works, what doesn't

- release a beta, test more, etc,

- then go for it, adding all the extra new apps, and viola - release ISO

- soon after a 2.6.25.16 release ISO, 2 more the same, with different kernels
I am also open to suggestions - I have not used every Pup, and am sure to have missed some nice little tweaks and ideas from other puplets.

Puplite is basically an exercise in updating on older system, without increasing resources needed.. And seeing what we need to run a simple, user-friendly desktop, and what we don't. If we can do without it, can we easily enable or disable it? See Menu->System->Startups for examples.

If anyone wants to test, or help now:

-> download & test Puplite 5.0 from the Derivatives thread (either kernel) and leave your feedback there.

-> check the TODO list in the first post of this thread, look at "fixes", "updates" and "setup"

-> tell me your hardware, and your keyboard, audio, video problems

-> Let me know about great lil features of other puplets (PULP, 214X, Lighthouse, LegacyOS, NOP, etc)

Puplite thread is here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63381

The homepage, with extra addons, is here: http://eminima.org/puplite/

I wish you every success.
Your base and approach is appreciated by many :)
We do have a lot personal projects (it is how expertise is
developed) and I also note you have offered to help out with Puppy Spot (5.3)
Maybe SneakyLinux will do a 'super duper' review of your puplet?

Good luck 8)

Not sure about that to be honest, but I'll get it how I want it, and if anyone likes it, great. I don't have a wide range of hardware to test on though, so a lil support and testing here and there will be very much appreciated. Although I can bum round to mates houses, work, etc, and test there as well, I guess...

I think some of the improvements I make in the JWM desktop setup might make it into pUpnGo - I already have JWM drive icons refreshing with mounted/unmounted bubbles on them, etc - It's now pretty damn similar to having rox providing the drives.

I will test any tools that I make or improve for Puplite in Spup or Lupu, etc - and post any that might be useful as PETs, on the relevant threads... if anyone likes them they can have them.

Examples of things already (or soon to be) in Puplite, that can be offered for other Puppies, after testing and stuff:

- extra pfix options "kiosk", "ask2save", "delaysave" (more save file management options)

- I plan to get the puppy 2 behaviour of auto-detecting input devices at boot, BACK into puppy 4...

- updated pup-advert-blocker (with a few small fixes for speed)

- default-apps-chooser (puppy needs one for extra convenience, many other distros use them)

- MAC changer, change to specific MAC address, or option to auto change to random MAC at desktop boot

- sjpplog - improved version of pplog (dunno if that is even included by default any more tho)

- my "startups" - could help improve the startup manager built into boot manager (it has better GUI for small screens, etc)

- toggle ROX desktop - easily enable/disable the ROX pinboard, and its desktop icons.. settings remembered each boot, easily changeable.. This could be adapted to other pups, or added into 01mickos-icon-layout-setup-thing..

- others as yet unfinished, or conceived!

Anyway thanks for the kind words

Ooops don't get me wrong now but are there not already two puppy lite?
So yours is the third puplite? Okay they maybe have another name but for us with poor memory we only remember that it is a puppy and it has lite in the name.

But I agree if it is lite what else to name it so numbering can help, one the other hand naming it 6.0 give the impression it is the official puppy 6.0 but in a lite version.

only my very weird way of getting it so maybe none else think that way.

I also wish you good luck, I even envy you. I fail to even make use of the features that already are included and you add things that is advanced to me.

sc0ttman:I will definitely look into that!

You are really working hard on puplite - very impressive! For the easy kernel switch-thing I might be on the wrong track:
The different squashfs-versions between the kernels prevent having one main-sfs-file for them all - I need at least two (1 in squashfs3 and 1 in squashfs4 formate). On top of that I need an initrd.gz for each kernel, as some of the modules reside in there...And then you need a zdrv.sfs for each kernel...And the kernels...

The content of the main-sfs-file is the same. Main content in initrd.gz is 99% the same (init-script is the same) - but it end up in a lot of files on the ISO. Kernels sharing squashfs-formate can share same main-sfs-file. If kernel module could be moved out of initrd.gz and into kernel it would be much simpler.
Below the present state (image removed) - any interest after this?

Hmmm... If someone made a puplite before me, I've no idea.
I only made Puplite - started with 1.0, then 2.0 and so on..
The latest is 5.0, which came in 2 kernel versions.

All are derivatives of Puppy 4.2.1.

I don't think anyone will be mistaking puplite for an official release! It is a puplet, a derivative, and I will make this clear on the forum, help files and welcome screen.

And there's nothing to envy - I haven't made any of it yet..
I'm all talk so far! ;)

And goingnuts, I will be happy to help you with the kernel switching if I can, but I doubt I will know or create anything that you cannot do yourself..

I am mainly interested in getting a pup2 kernel, pup4 kernel and wary511 kernel versions of puplite 6.0 - if I can combine them in some cool way, I would like to try...

Of course, any of my trials and errors can be reported on the pupbgo thread, to (try to) help... I will post the JWM drives thing as soon as I get it finished, which will a few days or so...

I will try to deliver a version with kernel 2.6.18.1 (P216), 2.6.25.16 (P412), 2.6.30.5 (P431) and 2.6.33.2 (P525) - but no guaranties

As I say, I'll basically be stealing your work here anyway - so it's all good... I will try to help if you need some, where I can, but no pressure to get anywhere with it! It's a tester/curiousity more than anything at the moment - if I can help make it more than that, I will.

If you (or anyone reading this) have any ideas about adding 2 different actions to the JWM drives menu, depending on right or left click, I'd love to hear it... At the moment, I've done away with 9menu, but if possible, I would like to use it as a right-click option on the drives... I will of course attempt it myself, based on the other JWM rc files in /root, but if anyone already knows how, it would be nice to share ;)

Why do you insist on the ancient 4.2.1 base? It's so old you can't even start X on recent hardware. It's small, that's right ... but it's way too old.

Firstly, its a personal project, why not?

No one whinges at ttuuxxx about keeping puppy 2 alive, and yes I know that is because he has done GREAT work with it, far beyond what I could do, but that's besides the point.

Secondly, I am doing it, among other non-puppy related things, to learn.. and to make a puppy that I want to use, I do it because I don't need newer hardware... I am not at all interested in more powerful desktop PCs...

The only newer hardware that interests me is ARM based stuff, tablets, ions, mini-itx, pixel qi, etc... Puppy is way off being an option on any of these devices - if puppy releases start to work with this stuff, I would have a serious look at those releases..

But I haven't the time, inclination or HD space for using Woof - as I could so easily download a recent pup build from the plethora available... I follow its developments, and take what I want/can.. That's enough for me..

And not arguing the Xorg point, but I personally have had puplite running on some fairly recent PCs (~1.5yrs old) at a local college, without issues, across 2 screens, on projectors, showing presentations to some classes there.... Which is good enough for me...

I even setup cartoon fighter on the projector, with joypads working, and had a little tournament with one class :D

Don't get me wrong, I love all the latest developments in puppy, lots of great devs, but shouldn't I do what I want? I'm also making a custom Aengstrom linux for ARM stuff, just 'cause I feel like it. I'm sure it will be useless :)

Ye Olde Puplites

Of historical interest only, but I am posting from Puplite2. It's a slim (54mb) but not barebones 2.02 based derivative with the 2.6.16.7 kernel. Just has Dillo as the browser, but I'm running OperaQT static.
Found the iso on the desktop PC's hdd - mainly used with XP (wife & kids), but can't remember where or when I downloaded it.
Running quite nicely on this Armada M700 P450 with 320mb RAM.

Thanks for the info.. Never seen that one... But now I know! :) Hmmm... Should I rename my Puplite then? Would anyone care if I didn't bother to rename it? I doubt it... But I don't mind.

l2ulinux, it's my pleasure - I am totally aware that most of the stuff I do is not for 'mainstream' puppy users, and of no interest to most, but I like to put my stuff up here anyway - when I make stuff, it's only a little extra effort to document it, and then share it. :D

Interesting approach. 2 comments. You may want to choose or offer a rename contest on the new Pupplite6 name.; and , it appears that yo will be offereing kernel selection at boot time, so you may want to make that selection as user-friendly as possible: for example, kernels for "old P2-P3-P4s less than 2GHz", "Any PCs with more than 3.5GB RAM" and "PC built after 2006" assuming you do decide to run with the 3 kernels you've referenced..

Looking forward

I've yet to decide on any final plans for kernel switching, but I was thinking more or less the same as you... List kernels, with description of ideal hardware, and date.

About the name, I will have a think... Maybe "Total Shitzu" lol ...
