The JPEG format is not suitable for these sort of images. You should use PNG. You will get full quality and very small file size.

@ abushcrafter

Congratulations abushcrafter, you are the first one in this thread who has posted something, except me of course. So, thank you for your posting, I‘ve read it very carefully and thoroughly and I‘ve tried to understand your posting in the right way. Well, let‘s see, if I‘ve understood you successfully.

You wrote, that it‘s not suitable to use JPG in a way I‘ve done it. And I ask me: „Suitable what for? What do you really want to do with the images I‘ve made and I‘ve posted in this thread? Do you like to make a very big printing of the one or the other image posted here? And do you like to put this printing on the wall over your bed, perhaps?“. So, if you like to do so or something similar or something different or something else, then please download a font of your choice, download the RTF example located here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 045#526045, install the font of your choice you‘ve downloaded and make an own image of the font using the downloaded RTF example by yourself. Too much work for you? Is this one reason perhaps, you‘ve told me, that JPG is not suitable? Don‘t get me wrong, but it seems to be that you dont like some work.

And by the way, this thread is about fonts at first and not about small images of the fonts at first. It looks like you want to write about something special which was wraped and boxed in a box - and you write only about the box - not about the contents of the box, not about this something special. The JPGs I‘ve posted here together with every single font are like the box in the figurative sense, but nevertheless the JPGs are only meant as a little help, one for each font. And this thead isn‘t been intended to post images with fonts - but fonts with images - as you can read it here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 042#526042 and here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 044#526044 and there of course http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 045#526045.

The JPGs posted here with the font archives are meant as a little help for everybody who is interested in fonts who is looking for a particular font, that he or she could have a first closer look to one particular font and thereafter to decide whether to download the font and install it for use or not. The usual way for getting fonts is in the first step to download the fonts, in the second step to install the fonts and after that to have a first closer look to the fonts you‘ve downloaded long before. But, this is not a good way of doing things like these, I think, even if this way is the usual one. And so, in this thread I took another way as mentioned above - and it‘s up you and up to everyone else who is interested in fonts to come with me - or to let it be.

You wrote, that only PNG gives very small sizes - and so I‘ve organized a contest PNG versus JPG. I‘ve made 20 fonttest images in XCF - put them all together as one big image - sized this image down to the forum limit of 600 pixels - and saved one candidate as a PNG with maximal compression and full quality of course - and saved the other candidate as a JPG with a quality level of 85%. The results were as follows: catalog-image.png (approximately 238 kbytes) - catalog-image.jpg (approximately 84 kbytes) - any more questions?

You wrote that only PNG gives the full quality and implcate that only full quality images are suitable in a thread like mine and in a forum like this here. So, I‘ve to answer back, that this is not quite right for sure. Suitable for images in this thread is a quality that is as high as nessescary - not as high as possible. It‘s the same as MP3 versus WAV for example - mostly no normal ear can hear a significant difference between MP3 and WAV if you use a quality level of 192 or little above. But the resulting size of these files is significant - it‘s about 1:8 in favour of MP3. As you can see by yourself, there is no signifikant difference while looking to both of the images I‘ve attached to this posting - no significant difference for your eyes of course. The quality of both images is nearly the same to your eyes - unfortunately both of them are not usable as a fonttest. But the PNG file has full quality - the highest possible quality. So why should I use a bigger image, if a much smaller one gives the same result to your eyes? Or should I only use bigger images for stressing the forum a little bit more?

But, abushcrafter, since you are the first one with the exception of me, who has posted in this thread as mentioned above, I think you should get an award for beeing the first one.

So, please take a look to the first file attached to this posting, as this attachment is your award. Since I don‘t know which of the fonts posted here already is the one you like the most, your award is a catalog image of all fonts posted here with the exception of the first one. This catalog image especially for you is a PNG of course, as I know that you think that a JPG wouldn‘t be suitable. The width of the award is 600 pixels as it seems to be that this is the greatest size for an image to be attached to a posting and to be seen in the forum directly without explicite downloading of this attached image. This award image is the same as the PNG example image of the size contest PNG versus JPG mentioned above. Unfortunately the PNG image is the loser of the contest PNG versus JPG.

The second attachment, the winner of the contest PNG versus JPG, you can have also, as a gift and as a reminder, that in most cases it makes sense to put some more quality in writing. In the same way it makes sense in most cases, first to switch on the own head and then write something - and not the other way round.

And last but not least after stopped thinking about your posting I come to the conclusion, that the JPGs will stay, exact in that way I‘ve posted them before. Why? Because the JPGs are suitable for images like these used within this thread - and from my point of view JPG is the only suitable format for these helping images for the fonts so far.

Finally, if you have some more questions or if you think that there are still some questions beeing left open, don‘t hesitate to ask me. I‘ll try do do my very best.

I hope you could understand what I‘ve had written as English is not my native language.

Cheers

Maik.Murks

PS: I think that I know about the difference between PNG and JPG - you too?
PPS: I‘ve read your quote - it‘s a cool quote, I think - have you ever read your quote, too?

Hi Maik!! :D

I just wanted to thank you for your brilliant idea of posting these fonts here like this to help "dress up" the looks and feels of our Puppy distros! You have posted some truly fabulous and fantastic fonts in these three pages - now making this forum my complete one-stop shopping site for EVERYTHING dealing with dressing up my Pup! This is simply too great to believe! :D

I agree with you in your note to Flash: I think this thread should be moved to the "Eye-Candy" section here. Themes, icons, wallpapers... and now fonts as well! - all these go the extra mile towards making our Puppy a gorgeous World Class and First Rate distro. I remember that it wasn't all that many years back when saying the words "fonts" and "Linux" together in the same sentence brought about snickers and a tonne of laughs... It just seemed that the two would NEVER end up working well together. ( I even recall Apple/Mac, for all ITS beauty, how their fonts were laughable! Who would think that today? )

We've made lightyears of advances in just the past couple of years. Amazing, isn't it?

Keep up the fabulous work Maik! This will soon become my favourite of all thread in a matter of DAYS at this rate. :)

Cheers/Amicalement,

Eyes-Only

Hi Eyes-Only.

I‘m very pleased that you like this thread so much - and the fonts posted here, of course. And I‘m very pleased too, that you find both that useful. :D

And I‘m very happy that I could give a little help to make this forum getting a 'complete one-stop shopping site for everything dealing with dressing up a puppy' for you. :D

And of course, I will keep on the work on this thread. Since there are more than 350 fonts downloaded so far, it seems to be that the concept of this thread works successfully. So I hope that you will find here in the future always still some more fonts of your interest.

Unfortunately I haven‘t got any answer from Flash until now, so it seems to be that this thread will stay here furthermore. But this is OK too, I think - for the moment.

Cheers
