Hi Aitch,

Yes, that one is one of about 20 rebranded 7" Chinese tablets the same as the one I ordered. They can be identified by the 600 mhz Rockchip RK2808 (ARM) processor, a 3000mah battery, 128 megs onboard, a video camera onboard, and currently, Android OS version 1.5. Any other specs and it is a different pad. Usually the type I'm getting is referred to as "IRocket" or "Moonse" brand "APAD", but many other brand names, like the one you referenced. There are two versions of these -- the early ones did not have the internal webcam, and should be avoided because of firmware issues. The current version 2 includes the webcam and can have firmware upgraded/rewritten/hacked -- already going on to improve it.

I say all that because, there is another similar group of 7" pads out there that has inferior performance based on the Via vt8505 chpset running at 300 mhz (often misreported as some other higher speed, even 600 mhz). This group is often labeled Eken brand and sometimes called Iped. There's a similar Eken with an 8" screen, also slow.

It is easy to get confused with all the rebranding and spec doctoring. I've been studying this stuff pretty hard the last few days. If interested, best site I've found for techies on this subject so far is the SlateDroid forum.

They've already hacked the rom with firmware upgrades. This is all fast breaking stuff. Also good is the Irobot/Moonse actual manufacturer website:

I have also found some references to Ubuntu running on higher end pads >$200. One seems to be the SmartQ V7 which apparently multiboots WinCE, Ubuntu 9.10, and Android.

This one runs on the Telechips processor (also ARM based).

Oh, sorry, got carried away, Aitch. I don't know if it will beat my ancient overclocked 600E, -- we'll see, but it will sure be easier to carry around in a pocket. Well a big pocket anyway!

Well, I got tired of waiting for "Processing" of the order, so canceled. No marshmallow.

But then ordered elsewhere the cheaper Eken M001 Android model -- they are now sub $100. I gotta fool around with one of these things. Yup, I know I could get two of them, or a better one at the same price if I wait around until the torture lady gets back, but life is to be lived now.

That Ecken's ROM source is about to be public, all kinds of exciting hardware mods going on. And Debian has been loaded by experimenters on it, see.

I like the idea - there is a netbook with a phone dock but I think I prefer this - all depends on pricing and uptake . . .

What do you expect from 25 buck devices? Don't wait and buy extra batteries.

I have no idea what the "right" prices are.

Apad is just slightly above 1000 yuan. I have seen many shitty PMPs here.

Seen 7inch pmp costing 800 yuan and a tablet pc running windows but 4000 something, the price isn't too bad.

Just checking if it can run my puppy on it.

Believe me, 25 bucks isn't much for anyone.

The prices are deadly right. For 20 bucks, I have to eat cheap lunch even here in Shanghai.

Even a cheap keyboard would cost more than 20 bucks in the US.

I agree... But my point being that 'alwaysinnovating ain't all that cheap, considering they are reportedly about as reliable as the dreaded a-pads.. And I saw an Indian company planning to release $10 tablet PCs...

Sometimes I wish the guys who produce overly-cheap tablets and such would just get real, stop being money grabbers selling, stop crap products that were never even designed to be good enough, and just release a good tablet for $100...

I have seen PMPs capable of running ANDROID.

It gives me hope that one day puppy can root those pmps with keyboard attached

And they are cheap .. about 500 yuan. .. with touch screen and some are as wide as 8"s

I do know about the poor quality of Chinese product.(having lived here for 8 years now)

However,

If you are careful, you can find reliable ones. ...at cheap prices.

You gotta shop around. Smile

I believe Asus has something going there! I didn't read the specs but I believe they are running Android? At any rate, I tried the Android OS on an old notebook I own, it does work but I wasn't really impressed that much. However, if there was a Puppy Android OS on that new tablet, it might make a world of improvement? But... I can see where the standard Puppy Apps probably would not be of much use, one would have to go the 'Cloud Route' I believe?

There is little question as to where this industry is headed with Apple turning to the cloud and most of the other major players, Google, IBM, Amazon etc.

Tablets will no doubt be cheap to purchase (some are already) and wireless is again no doubt the future of the Internet. Internet IP service via cable or dialup is a matter of economics... as more turn to tablets, netbooks and wireless, that's where the advertisers will put their dollars and when they no longer support the cable, dialup, with those advertising dollars, well... we all know what happens, their history. Sad for sure but thats the advancement of technology, like it or not.

And yes... looking more into tablet and Puppy would be very smart move besides Lobster, you have a fantastic collection of 'Cloud Stuff' already from what you posted over in the Cloud Puppy tread! 'Use it for the tablet!!!'

Will the move to the tablet be easy? I hope it's accepted better than when I decided to do the cloud puppy thing (Oh my the headaches) but if Puppy is going to survive at all, the move to new technology is a must or we are going down the same road as cable and dialup!

This viewpad must be exceptional because it dual-boots Android and Windows. The specs say:

This is x86 low enough in power consumption that the processor no longer requires a fan.

I have used the new Puppies Quirky/Wary in an Intel Pine Trail combo mini-ITX board, and the video setup is difficult to bring to 1366x768, the native resolution of many low-cost LCD monitors. (Tablet devices are using the usual 4:3 display of 1024x768, so there is no problem setting this resolution.)
